Is easy access to hardcore going to cause problems for youth?

Recently a program on CBC TV ran an episode called “Sext Up Kids” where they explored the worries that kids are being hyper-sexualized due to widely-available porn and mobile devices. I didn’t see the show because, in my opinion, this program seems to sensationalize stories and I wouldn’t expect any better treatment for this topic. I did, however, listen to a lengthy CBC radio segment on the same topic with the documentary’s director.

What struck me was how much the panic over the sexting issue sounded a lot like the times a moral panic set in over sex bracelets and rainbow parties. Both of which proved to be entirely false. I’m aware that some sexting does go on, but I highly doubt that it goes on to the extent that the media and soccer moms think it does. I’m convinced that when it comes to how we as adults view kids from 12 to 18 we throw reason and critical thinking out the door and become irrational. (A good article at Cracked implies that maybe we’re just jealous of all the fun these kids are supposedly having. http://www.cracked.com/blog/a-letter-to-...ke-teen-crazes-news/ )

One line of thinking in the radio segment did seem to make sense though, and that’s the possible effects of so much hardcore porn on how young people view sexuality. The comments were made about the things you’d expect to hear about: rough oral sex, DPs, anal sex, gangbangs and group sex. The view was that since all this hardcore porn is so easily available that young people come to see this as normal sex. And maybe this is me being irrational and acting like a soccer mom, but this argument seems to make sense.

A lot of PU members are firmly into middle age or older. Think back to the porn you could access, if you could, when you were 15. For me it was soft stuff like Playboy and the times I could get something “harder” like Penthouse were exciting times, indeed. But I was 18 before I saw anything really hardcore, and even then it would be tame by the standards of a lot of current porn.

Another thing that struck me was the thought that if this is what young people see as normal sex, how does that impact them? The biggest impact is obviously for girls who may not understand that sex is about their pleasure too, but the prevalence of hardcore porn might make a young girl think that sex has to be a performance and her ‘job’ is to please the boy she’s with. This is in stark contrast to my early sexual experiences in that when the opportunity presented itself I was focused on making things pleasurable for the girl, not out of altruistic goals, but figuring that if it was good for her she’d invite me to do it again and again. Let’s face it, when you’re a teen, regular sex isn’t a goal, it is THE prime directive!

I’m not really sure what my point is here, but does anyone else think that so much access to free (stolen) hardcore porn might be warping young minds? And am I just being smug when I think that since I refuse to view pirated porn that I’m not contributing to the problem?

I wish I could remember the study I read only the other day. It was done by reputable psychologists and maintained that most young people's sexual attitudes and behaviour are in no way being effected by porn. Most do know the difference between the fantasy world of porn and the real world.

But who knows, maybe the family values people could come up with their own battery of psychologists who would come to a completely opposite conclusion.

Not very helpful, I know. I just know that I looked at hard porn from a very early age (11-13?), when school mates would pass a bunch of dirty pictures around, and that I didn't rush out to imitate what they represented as I got older.

To this day I love and respect women and even have the tendency to put them on a bit of a pedestal. However, I do like them a bit naughty .. so maybe that's where early porn did me in!

The minds of young kids are fertile and impressionable.. like a sponge, their brain absorbs things that interest them and, it follows they're more apt to precipitantly act upon them.
I feel the current availability of porn is, and will indeed effect a youth unfavorably.
But the business of porn is an entrenched, power-driven, twelve billion dollar, burgeoning industry that isn't likely to slow down for anything in it's path....even if it possibly means prematurely, sexualy directing the mind and actions of our youth.

The only study that I'm willing to look is one where they compare the vast influence of mainstream media on youth vs porn. You can't tell me that the way singers like Britney Spears, Rhianna, Katty Perry and a slew of others dress and act is less influential than porn? We all know sex sells but there was a time when advertisers were targeting adults and not young children. How many current TV shows
have no qualm about depicting underage kids in very very sexual situation? What the Hell isn't sex a major theme of Glee and unless I'm way off on this one. These are all kids in High School. Long live the Brown Coats.

12 - 21 year olds are not sponges - they are hormones gone wild. I read that doing stupid things is how humans have learned to adapt over the millenniums.

God knows it was a trying time for me and most people I know. I was reading porn books when I was that age - got them from the Greyhound Bus station, and along with Playboy delved into my fantasies. I realize now I was also into Gonzo Porn cause I'd cut out of those books just the porn sentences. Who gave a crap about a story line?

What I think that affects kids now is their ability to "Be Here Now" with technology which I didn't have growing up. And, while multimedia was just beginning when I was a teen, it is main stream now and goes a long way to influencing kids. Porn is just another stream in that bombardment on the consciousness of kids - just as Pat was talking about. Hell when I was in my late teens, it was the Beatles. And look what it turned me into.

Each brain is different - some kids more impressionable than others. So yes porn can be a bad influence, but then so can my cousin Britney, or Pat Robertson or Al Quida.

But to dump all your blame into the porn basket is just more mental midgetry with one more clown looking for his 15 mins of fame. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

If you're going to lay her head over the pool table and fuck her throat, get your fucking hand off her throat!

Rock and Roll is the Devil's music. Rock started out in the 1950's, and it's still popular today. So we must be living in the Devil's world today.

Porn is just an expression of the Devil's world.

Only the pure in heart and mind (good and proper thinking Christians) will be saved. All others are going straight to Hell.

Documentaries and studies can be used to prove anything.

Are kids impressionable? Certainly. But so are adults.

Yeah, I’ve heard that. First from the nuns when I started my schooling, and then from every manner of zealot I’ve encountered since then.

The devil? From all I’ve been able to ascertain, he was a high-ranking soldier who became disenchanted with the hierarchy and how things were being run, questioned authority, and was banished. Those who have done the same since then have been deemed heroes.

His boss, the heavenly father made all we see from scratch and thin air. He gave us nerve endings and the means to interpret their stimulation as pleasurable, and then said “don’t do it” He gave us human nature and said “don’t follow it” He gave us temptation and said “resist it” He was a sick fuck. As powerful as he was, you’d think he could entertain himself in a way that was more entertaining. His handbook, the bible, has under a quarter million words.
Those who study the bible have documented more than three quarter million discrepancies in its many variations.
Love thy neighbor , except, when he pisses me off.
Organized death and mayhem throughout history has usually been in his name (the exceptions have been nationalists and sport fans).
The Crusades? All for a fucking cup.
That Lucifer guy doesn’t look so bad, does he?

All in all, I don't have a big problem with god. I've just never really liked who he hangs with.

C'mon, lighten-up a little. I ain't out-right condemning or saying porn is a going-to-hell evil. It just makes sense to me that it carries negative vibes that kids just aren't ready for.
Matter of fact, if I were a kid in today's world I'd be elbow-deep in porn. My war against getting caught would have to demand astute ways of hiding whatever would get me into trouble -- Some of which might be akin to a dependable non-conspicious object to prop against my bedroom door. Among other things, available proximity to and time-consumming access to a bathroom where I won't be disturbed. I'd be busy. But in the wrong way.

And based on my current obsession with porn, I can readily see where (in my youth) the time I'd have devoted to titillating material would've stripped me of an interest in getting an education or preparing for where I am today.

At the expense of trimming the message I attempted to convey in my earlier #3 post .... I suppose I can't positively say this applies universally, but, to me and like-minded kids growing up.....
Hence, Therein would lie the crux.

Very compelling statement, Micha. Extraordinaraly well written and thought-provoking -- but a tad blasphemous.
Guess the Nuns and zelots lacked the fervor and persuasion necessary to win you over.
I'll say hello to Lucifer for you, since I'll be preceding you on our eventual trek to the here-after.
Look me up upon your arrivel. I'll be amounst the legions of porn-obsessed souls who'll likely be watching porn on big-screen, hopefully somewhere away from the flames.

Because it's very easy to do and porn is not one of their sponsor. I'm pretty sure Rush had no problem calling a young woman a slut for a couple of days but I wonder if he still thinks it was such a great idea.

As long as mainstream media makes money from showing bloody murders and horrible acts of violence then they'll do it. The day we see semi-naked people on autopsy tables can't be far off in the futur because it will include some blood and it won't be in a sexual situation. Long live the Brown Coats.

Some TV shows already show full-nude bodies on post mortem tables, and topless isn't that unusual now. Even Midsommer Murders showed a topless body during a post mortem summary once.

It always seems that people in the UK are much more open to nudity, and people in the US are more open to violence (at least as far as movies and television are concerned). Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

I think Quebecers have you beaten on this one because it's not that unusual to see semi-naked people in mainstream TV shows and that's not just today but from at least 10 years ago. Of course a large percentage of the population have roots that go back to France and the French don't have a problem with nudity. We used to have a mainstream network that would show softcore porn movies after 11pm. Long live the Brown Coats.

Yes, and I used to watch them without being able to understand more than a word of French now and then! I still remember the Emmanuelle (sp?) movies and one movie with an mdom/fsub theme that I will never forget. Most erotic thing I ever saw and that includes today's porn.

I am going to go with Capn on this one.

I find it sad we focus on Marijuana and Porn in this country and others.
But apparently one tossing off in the privacy of their own house why taking back a doobie is the end of the world?

But we think its fine to throw the constitution in the toilet and double, triple and quadruple tax to the citizens.
Give Rapist and child molesters 5 years in prison but if ya steal 5 grand from a bank and you get 25-35 years.
We have homeless people living under bridges and eating at soup kitchens. While the USA pay companies to destroy left over food and build houses no one can live in for tax purposes. We give banks a get out of debt free card, but lose our homes because we can not afford the payments.

Sure little Johny jerkin off to a playboy is the end of the fucking world. He can go to highschool any day and see more hard core life then any porn could ever legally show him. He can watch mommy and daddy drink into a coma, but lets focus on porn. Sixty five percent of all marriages
end in divorce out of those 65%, Fifty nine percent have kids. And end up living in broken homes. But lets focus on porn on his Ipad.

I can not open the paper with reading about crooked cops, politicians, and people stealing from the elderly.
People are abused, not trustworthy and do far more things that are illegal. Porn is not illegal its morality is
created by society and its fear of sex.

I could careless if it was porn or buying a candy bar or playing video games. But people always want to attack
some ones fantasy be it games or porn.

Well I got news for you open a fucking paper, reality is not as great as its cracked up to be either

Ok, done, now gonna go take my Viagra medication and jerk off LOL
( not really but sounded like a great way to end the rant ) Since 2007

My on the subject is that for most young kids it won't be a huge problem; just an extension of the old Playboys and stuff most of us first encountered as kids. For those kids with a propensity for addiction or social isolation I think it will accelerate those problems.

In all actuality I think the hyper driven social media world is the biggest problem for kids. When you can't think or act without telling someone about it or getting approval for it, that's a real problem. I've already seen it in one business run by a bunch of 20 somethings. Everyone in the office was living off of instant messaging, Facebook, twitter and whatever else. There was no time for reflection or thought, just a go and post mindset. You end up with a group dominated by the strongest personalities / most popular / best at applying pressure, sort of like bringing high school into the work place. This probably isn't anyone's idea of a business that's going to have long term success.

Spoken like a true Libertarian Cybertoad!

I remember a psychologist once tried to tie together my anger issues which were at the time, depression related and my porn addiction with this ignorant question, "Do you feel like masturbating after you have been angered, or during your anger?". I said, "yeah, sometimes, not always".

Let me relate a story about this subject. The company I work for hired a young woman in her late teens early 20's to take care of incoming orders. The job isn't all that hard but we get a lot of orders so you're kept busy during the day. This young lady spent a long time during the day texting. She was told on more than one occasion to not text during work hours. That didn't sink in so she was warned that if she didn't stop then she'd be fired. Yes, you have guessed correctly. She was fired after being with the company for about 2 weeks. She admited that she couldn't live without texting. I remember seeing her texting during the lunch break. Now that is pathetic. Here you have a young woman in desperate need of a job and loses it because she can't stop texting. Long live the Brown Coats.

Oh the nuns were quite convincing, for the first 8 years anyway, I was a pious little prick. I was even an altar boy for much of that time. I had to learn a mess of Latin to do that, which had assisted me immeasurably in working crosswords and extrapolating meaning when encountering unfamiliar words in other Romance languages.
The nun’s influence ended at about 13. Had I continued, I probably would claim to have been crippled by the Roman Catholics like so many others, but leaving when I did, I have fond thoughts thinking back and the certainty that my education was far superior to anything institutional, that followed. I was a good student because I aimed to please the nuns.
Subsequent zealots were barely tolerated, though I learned to appear to tolerate them for safety’s sake.
I don’t fear the fire below so much and am sure that anyone I’ve ever found interesting will be encountered there.

A friend fell on hard times when the economy tanked and has been living with his wife in a motel, which has an arrangement with the county whereby housing and pizza delivery is provided to parolees. All of the offenders in this place are sex offenders, two of which are rapists and the remaining 8 to 10 are molesters of the under-aged. Their medical and prescriptions are handled, including Viagra and Cialis. What a great country this is ! unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck.
