Ireland, the land of Irish whiskey?

If I were a heavy drinker, I might consider moving to Ireland.

Unfortunately, I drink very little, or not at all most of the time. So I will have to find some other place to move to.

Irish County Lets Some Drive Drunker?
By Daniel Clark | ABC News – 19 hrs ago

The County Kerry Council in southwest Ireland passed a measure on Monday that allows rural drivers to legally drive while under the influence of alcohol.

The council voted 5-3 - with 12 absent and seven abstaining - to issue special permits to individuals who live in rural areas and wish to drive home on remote countryside roads after consuming two to three alcoholic beverages. The council will have to rely on Justice Minister Alan Shatter to implement the changes to current drinking and driving laws by issuing special permits.

Councilor and County Kerry pub owner Danny Healy-Rae introduced the bill, arguing that citizens driving while intoxicated in rural areas have never killed anyone. He defended the measure by asserting that it would prevent loneliness and reduce the risk of suicides among those who live in Ireland's backcountry.

"A lot of these people are living in isolated rural areas where there's no public transport of any kind, and they end up at home looking at the four walls, night in and night out, because they don't want to take the risk of losing their license," Healy-Rae told TheJournal.ie.

Tougher drunk driving laws have been credited with reducing the number of people killed on Irish roads. The overall number of road deaths has fallen by 56 percent in the last five years and in 2012, 161 people were killed, the lowest since records were kept, according to the Road Safety Authority. In addition to lowering the legal limit from 80 mg per 100 ml of blood (.08 percent in U.S. terms) to 50 mg, Irish authorities have also increased the volume of mandatory alcohol checkpoints.

The Irish Department of Transport, Alcohol Action Ireland and the Road Safety Authority have all voiced opposition to the proposal, citing the overwhelming evidence linking alcohol consumption with impaired driving.

"Unfortunately, rural areas are among the most dangerous roads in Ireland. We need to be looking at how to make our roads safer, particularly in rural areas, instead of trying to reverse existing measures, which are clearly working," an Irish Department of Transport spokesman told Sky News.

Just makes you wonder if the County Kerry Council was drunk when they 8 members woke up to vote. The other 19 members where obviously lifting drinks as the vote took place. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

If you're going to lay her head over the pool table and fuck her throat, get your fucking hand off her throat!

Danny Healy-Rae is an utter cretin and does not represent the majority view in Ireland, Healy-Rae family are considered a laughing stock of the country. Also it may not be a surprise that Councillor Danny Healy-Rae owns a bar. There is absolutely zero chance of these permits actually being issued.

Kerry men are the butt of jokes throughout the rest of Ireland for being thickos, heres some for you

How do you recognize a Kerryman on an oil rig?
He's the one throwing crusts of bread to the helicopters.

Have you heard about the Kerryman who cheated CIE?
He bought a return ticket to Dublin and didn't go back.

A Kerryman rang Aer Lingus and asked how long it took to fly from Dublin to London?
"Just a minute sir", said the girl on the desk.
"Thank you", said the Kerryman, and hung up.

Have you heard about the Kerryman whose library was burned down?
Both books were destroyed, and worse still, one hadn't even been coloured in.

How do you make a Kerryman laugh on a Monday morning?
Tell him a joke on Friday evening.

A Kerryman was attacked by a robber and put up a spirited fight before parting with his purse which contained only 15c.
"You mean to tell me you put up all that struggle, all for 15c?"
"No," said the Kerryman, "I thought you were after the E50 i've hidden in my left
shoe".

What do you call a Kerryman on a bicycle?
A dope peddler.

A fellow was explaining to a Kerryman how nature sometimes compensates for a person's deficiences.
"For example", he told him, "if a man is deaf, he may have keener sight, and if a
man is blind, he may have a very keen sense of smell".
"I think i see what you mean", said the Kerryman, "I've often noticed that if a man has one short leg, then the other one is always a bit longer".

A Kerryman went to insure his car and paid E20 to have it insured against fire.
"For E10 more sir", said the agent, "you can insure it against theft also".
"That would be a waste of money", said the Kerryman, "who would want to steal a
burning car?"

Kerry workman to his workmate: "Don't come down that ladder, Mick. I've taken it
away".

A Kerryman got a job as a lumberjack, but try as he might, he couldn't meet his quota of fifty trees a day. By chance he saw an ad in a shop window for chainsaws
'guaranteed to fell 60 trees a day'. So he bought one, but the best he could manage was forty trees a day.
So he took it back to the shop and complained that there must be something wrong with it.
"Let me look at it", said the man in the shop. So he took the chainsaw and switched it on.
"What's that noise?" said the Kerryman.

A Kerryman wrote the following letter to the editor of a newspaper:
Dear Sir,
Last week I lost my gold pocket watch, so yesterday I put in an ad in your LOST AND FOUND columns. Last night I found the watch in the trousers of
my other suit. God bless your newspaper.

^ Hilarious, Reveen. Thanks for the laugh. In Canada the "Kerryman" would have been replaced with "Blonde" to spare sensitive feelings.

Trader Joe's (a retail grocery chain in the U.S.) has increased the price of their $2 bottle of wine to $2.49.

I've never tried the wine. Almost never drink any wine. But I assume it's supposed to be better than you would think, for a $2 bottle of wine.

Trader Joe's: No 'Two-Buck Chuck' Wine in Calif.

By Lauren Torrisi | ABC News Blogs 6 hrs ago

Don't worry "Two-Buck Chuck" fans, it's not as bad as you think.

"The price change for Charles Shaw wines is only happening in California, no other states are affected," said Alison Mochizuki, director of public relations for Trader Joe's, in a statement.

The price increase, which went from $1.99 to $2.49, took effect on January 16.

"Maintaining value is of the utmost importance at Trader Joe's and we work hard to have every item in the store at an intersection of quality and price that highlights outstanding value. In general, our retail prices change only when our costs change. In the case of Shaw in California, we've held a $1.99 retail price for 11 years. Quite a bit has happened during those years and the move to $2.49 allows us to offer the same quality that has made the wine famous the world over," said the statement.

The price of a bottle of Charles Shaw wine varies in different states depending on tax rates and other variables.

"Alcohol availability & price may vary due to state laws, taxes, shipment fees & other such stuff. (If we could, we would.)," their website states.

When news first broke that Trader Joe's would be upping their inexpensive Charles Shaw wine fans of the product started re-thinking the name.

"Up Chuck" and "Inflation Chuck" were some of the suggestions.

I've heard from a few restauranteurs that they put their really shitty wine that they want to get rid of on the the mid-price section of their wine list because people never order the house wine because they think they'll look cheap

A one time price increase of $.50 after 11 years sounds just about right for inflation. And this article from the Trader Joe's website last February lists a number of states where the same exact product is as high as $3.29 (Virginia) and $3.79 (Ohio), both of which still sound pretty cheap for wine that isn't sold in a cardboard box.

I'm not a big fan of Trader Joe's myself--tiny stores with limited selection and a glut of house brands. Though I still think it beats Whole Foods and its own overpriced brand of "all natural" smugness. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I recently read something similar about Tide detergent. Supposedly they have such an established brand (around since the late 1940s) that they don't have to lower their prices, and they are still #1 nationally. The article was actually in relation to thieves specifically targeting Tide to resell for quick cash. But it also made the point that customers--who would otherwise be buying cheaper brands of every other product they get from stores that sell Tide--feel that being able to afford Tide is a sort of personal status symbol.

I guess that H.L. Mencken quote "No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." is alive and well. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Yeah, its exactly the same with Kelloggs Cornflakes, there are millions of exactly the same cornflakes brands but people don't want to be seen to be buying a "cheap" brand

Car manufacturers do something similar, like General motors will put out 2 cars that are exactly the same under the hood but one has Chevy styling and the other has Buick styling and slightly more affluent people will buy one brand because they think that brand is inherently better despite the objective evidence being that both are the same!

Actually there are some boxed wine that are pretty good - wouldn't want to lay them down, but they are quite serviceable for quaffing wine. If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee.

And to be fair they probably cost considerably more than $2, but that's because you're getting a lot more wine (and with a handle!).

An interesting thing I've heard about wine that isn't boxed or even bottled with a traditional cork: they're basically impossible to ruin after packaging, but people think that if the wine doesn't have a cork it's then somehow déclassé. But if it's boxed, where it comes in a plastic Camelbak-like bladder, has a screw-top, or has a plastic cork, then it can't be ruined by a rotted or tainted cork.

Though I guess it's not as elegant to smell the bottlecap at a nice restaurant. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? This discussion reminds me of an amusing Onion article about a dad who buys bargain cereal for his kids. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I love how it describes it: "Showalter made the controversial decision" and " 'To think of all the money we could have saved. Actually, I don't want to-it's too painful.' "

Jim Gaffigan has joked about buying generic cereal and then having to lie to the cashier about who it was really for. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it?
