Mom detained in Dubai after drinking complimentary glass of wine on Emirates flight

Ellie Holman said she was detained along with her daughter after drinking a glass of wine on an Emirates flight to Dubai.

Ellie Holman said she was detained along with her daughter after drinking a glass of wine on an Emirates flight to Dubai.

A mother from Kent, England, and her young daughter were jailed in Dubai for three days – where she was allegedly denied water and forced to clean toilets – after she admitted to drinking a glass of wine on the incoming Emirates flight from London, but Dubai officials have a different side of the story.

It’s illegal to drink alcohol or be intoxicated in public in Dubai, one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates.

Ellie Holman, a 44-year-old dentist originally from Sweden who resides in Britain with her husband and their three children, was arrested on July 13 after landing in Dubai with her 4-year-old daughter, the Press Association reported.

Upon arrival in Dubai, an official reportedly told Holman she needed to return to the United Kingdom immediately because of an invalid visa, at which point she took out her phone and started filming the encounter, according to human rights group Detained in Dubai.

Holman said the official was “dismissive and rude” to her, and asked if she had been consuming alcohol. She admitted to the official that she had a complimentary glass of wine on the Emirates flight.

Holman, unaware that it was an offense to film the encounter, and illegal to drink alcohol, was taken into custody, Detained in Dubai reported. The mother and her daughter also had their passports and electronic devices confiscated.

Holman said in a statement to Detained in Dubai that the prison guards also attempted to pull out her hair extensions, and the prison facility was “hot and foul-smelling.” She claimed she and her daughter were forced to sleep on a “filthy mattress” and to clean toilets.

“My little girl had to go to the toilet on the cell floor. I have never heard her cry in the same way as she did in that cell,” Holman said in a statement.

Holman added that she was given food that “smelled like rotting garbage.” She said her husband and friends tried to visit her in jail, but they were not allowed to see her.

Ellie Holman claimed she drank one complimentary glass of wine on her Emirates flight to Dubai.

Holman was released on bail days later, but could face “being detained in Dubai for up to a year while awaiting a court hearing,” the Press Association reported. Her passport was confiscated until the case is finished, and she claims to have already lost thousands of dollars in missed wages and legal costs.

Her daughter returned to the United Kingdom with her husband.

Holman was initially traveling to Dubai with her to daughter to visit friends for a few days. She has been in the country before.

However, Dubai officials told The Sun a different story and disputed the dentist’s claim.

“We dispute Dr. Holman’s account of her treatment," an official told The Sun. “She was not turned away because she had a one-visit visa, as she claimed, because European citizens get a 30-day visa upon arrival. UAE law is strict on people recording others on their mobile phone without permission, which will not have helped Dr. Holman’s case. She became abusive towards airport staff, which is not tolerated.

“We cannot comment further as Dr Holman’s case is still under review but there is more to her story than she has told."

Dubai's Attorney General's Office told Fox News in a statement that an investigation into the incident was completed and charges were dropped. The office said it decided to deport Hollman after she attempted to enter the country with an expired visa.

The office also said Hollman and her child "remained in airport security for less than 24 hours while services were provided to them, taking into full account and consideration of her 4-year-old daughter."

Radha Stirling, Detained in Dubai’s chief executive, said it is “wholly illegal for any tourist to have any level of alcohol in their blood, even if consumed in flight and provided by Dubai’s own airline. It is illegal to consume alcohol at a bar, a hotel and a restaurant, and if breathalyzed, that person will be jailed."

However, Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says that being intoxicated, and not neccessarily just having a small amount of alcohol in your system, is what's actually forbidden, according to News.com.au.

“It’s illegal to drink alcohol or be intoxicated in public,” the department states. “You can be arrested. Foreigners have been arrested on arrival after becoming intoxicated on incoming aircraft or while in transit.”

This story was updated to add a comment from Dubai officials.

This is real news, for Jacksonville, Fla.
An 11 year old boy was dribbling a basketball and did not stop dribbling when a cop told him to stop.
So the kid is a suspect who dis-respected the cop.
Instead of putting handcuffs on the suspect, the cop should have shot him.
Make America great again, by eliminating the scum who disrespect the police.
So what if the suspect was 11 years old?
If he hasn't learned respect for the police by that age, he deserves to be shot.
That will teach him some manners.
And the cop had right on his side: There was a sign on the premises that stated: “Parents need to stay with their kids.”
And the parent was not by her kid.
So there.

Police officers handcuffed an 11-year-old boy dribbling a basketball for reportedly 'being disrespectful'

An 11-year-old boy says he now fears the police after he was handcuffed after a youth basketball game for “being disrespectful.”

On Saturday, fifth-grader Fatayi Jomoh was shooting hoops after watching a children’s basketball game sponsored by the Police Athletic League at JaxPAL Northside Center in Jacksonville, Fla., when an officer asked him three times to stop bouncing the ball, according to local news station News 4 Jax, which first reported the story.

However, his mother, Bunmi Borisade, says her son, an honor roll student, aspiring engineer, and talented athlete simply didn’t hear the officer in the crowded venue until it was too late. “Fatayi later told me that when he turned to gather his belongings and walk away, the officer said, ‘I know you hear me, boy,’ pushed him to the floor, and put handcuffs on him,” Borisade tells Yahoo Lifestyle, adding that a man later identified as a sergeant reportedly said, “Now you’ll see how it feels to be arrested.”

At the time, the mom of two was in another area of the gym and did not witness the interaction between her son and the police — until a 6-year-old girl approached. “She said, ‘Excuse me, the police have your son. They put handcuffs on him for dribbling a ball.’ I said, ‘You can’t be serious.'”

Borisade rushed outside, where Fatayi was being held, and saw her crying son surrounded by people. When she asked the officer what had happened, he reportedly said, “He was being disrespectful.” The mom says she asked the officer why she wasn’t contacted before the situation escalated, and she was told, “There’s a sign here that says parents need to stay with their kids.”

“I told Fatayi, ‘This is why you stick by my side — these officers don’t care about your life. Look at how quickly they wanted to take you away,'” Borisade tells Yahoo Lifestyle. Her son ultimately was not arrested and was released back into her care.

Representatives from the Police Athletic League and the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office did not return Yahoo Lifestyle’s requests for comment. However, a spokesperson from the sheriff’s office told News 4 Jax that a complaint made by Borisade is being reviewed by its Internal Affairs office.

Borisade described her son as a mild-mannered boy with a love of coding who has played in the police-sponsored games for the past three years. “I wish the officers had given him a chance,” she says. “He’s very hurt by it.”

I don't consider this position to be racist (no sentence that begins that way can end well...) but you couldn't pay me enough to go anywhere in the fundamentalist parts of the Middle East. The risks of stuff like this happening are just too great. Their's is a different culture and many rules are different so I'd just stay away. Yes, I'm aware that Dubai has a huge population of westerners and those people live in segregated areas where things like alcohol and pork are permitted, but still no.

Not that this would matter since I wasn't planning to travel there, but since Saudi Arabia and Canada are in a shouting match I suspect Canadians aren't welcome in Saudi these days anyway. Us damn Canadians called the Saudis out for human rights abuses and jailing some activists. Then the shitstorm started.

Then again, there are parts of the US that I avoid too. Religion makes some people crazy.

@rearadmiral,
You are welcome to visit California.
We used to welcome kooks of all persuasions, but I haven't heard or seen many of the cults that used to be evident all over the place: Hari Krishna, hippies, whatever.
Even an old salty (sailor speak for water rovers) like you would fit right in.

Make sure you bring your uniform: either Canadian Navy or PU Militant.

Yes, I think you are correct - I could happily visit California and feel happy about that. Then again, it seems that your President is threatening to declare war on that state so maybe I should wait and see...
