John Hughes passes away Turboshaft brought this up on another thread and I thought that John Hughes deserved his own. I'm old enough to remember when each of his movies came out and I always thought that they were fun and entertaining. He defined a generation with some of his earlier work. Sixteen Candles, The breakfast Club and Ferris Buellers day off being good example of teen angts in the 80's. These are classic that are still funny today and possibly relevant, but for me there are only 2 movies that he directed that I still watch regularly. Uncle Buck with the late John Candy and Plane, Trains and automobiles also with John Candy and Steve Martin. I dare anyone to watch either and not laugh your ass off. He was also a very succesful producer. As well as producing most of his own movies. He is responsible for Home Alone, Pretty in Pink, The Great Outdoors, Christmas Vacation, and many others. He pretty much dropped off the Hollywood radar screen years ago, but he was still writing as last year. Take a look at what someone wrote about him on this link and you might discover even more about the Man: http://wellknowwhenwegetthere.blogspot.c...ely-john-hughes.html Long live the Brown Coats.

Ferris Buellers Day Off was my favorite. I've watched it many times! It's a great comedy, and one that everyone who's been through high school can relate to. Plus, it's not a coming-of-age movie. Coming of age is a difficult and sometimes painful process; I want to be entertained when I watch a movie and not be reminded of my teenage angst, which was considerable. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Agreed - Ferris Bueller has some great scenes - perfect movie to watch in bits and pieces when it gets shown on cable - especially because Mia Sara is such a babe!

For people who like John Hughes, and are looking for the modern equivalent, I recommend a few recent movies, all with Michael Cera - who seems to be the prototype of the cute nerdy-looking high school guy. Superbad is hilarious and over-the-top. Juno is an amazing funny-sad movie. I just saw Nick & Nora's Infinite Playlist, which is the most realistic movie I've seen in quite a while on the late teen experience while being quite entertaining. The dialogue is brilliant. It reminded me so much of listening to young relatives chat at family get-togethers. Elements like the main character drive a Yugo and have to repeatedly fend off people who won't believe that he isn't a Gypsy Cab Driver are beautiful. I love the framework of a night where the group of people are running all over trying to find a certain band playing a one-off mystery gig - I have numerous fond memories of those kind of quests - some successful, some not. My favorite was having to invade a Lesbian Separatist Party to get to see an all-woman punk band in Santa Fe, NM. We only got to see one song, but it was worth it to see them - and a great, fun night.

This is really sad news. Ferris Bueller was one of my favorite movies, especially after moving to Chicago. May he rest in peace.

I agree that Nick and Nora's has the feel of something that John Hughes might have made or been conected with. I was in a video store a couple of months ago and noticed that it was in the pre-viewed bin for about 15$, so I bought it. I didn't watch it right away. Then one night I started watching it and I was hooked with the first 10 minutes. The charatcers are funny, inteligent. I can't think of another movie where the 2 best friend of the main characters are gay but not as some kind of gay rights side story but actually part of the story. In what other movie does the phrase "Fist Full of Assholes" get used for comic relief. Long live the Brown Coats.

Yeah, it's a really modern movie in the relationship between Nick and his gay friends - they're not a punch-line, they're not hitting on him, he's not apologetic or defensive about his close relationship with gay guys while not being gay himself - he reminds me of my nephew in that way.
