Dangling Corners

Maybe you've noticed at this or that site there is what could be called a "dangling corner," the top right animated to look as if the page is waiting to be turned.

Mousing up to it makes it move and reveal info and/or some kind of offer or upsell.

Eveangelofficial has one. JustTeenSite used to have one. Babelicious did, too; funny, I complained about theirs (like, 2 years ago) and, in response, they took it out!

Well, it's like this. You're trying to concentrate. You move your mouse on your monitor and -- as a result -- things happen that distract you. The dangling corner is one of those. It's annoying, if you ask me.

I hate it when sites add all of this extra crap to their pages that pop up and/or animate and really do nothing more than irritate. I find myself developing spatial/motor memory on return visits in order to recall where on the screen matrix I should move the mouse so that this shit can be avoided. Which wastes cycles on my own internal "processor."

Web pages can be done well without this code "goop" clogging up the pathways of algorithmic elegance.

But what do you think? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Jan 03, 2010, 03:17pm

The JustTeenSite animation was really annoying. I would try to look at part of the page, and the stupid animation would get in the way and I would have to play around with the mouse to try to see what I was looking for on the page. I wanted to pick up my monitor and throw it against the wall at times because of this effect, which would have been even more stupid. As I get older, I find that I am losing my patience.

I don't like upsells of any kind when they're on a site I've paid for, but animated crap of any sort would keep me from joining a site again. Yes, they're just too damn distracting. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Yes, I find them irritating too.

I don't care for being distracted like that.

I'm not really fond of things that dangle...whether they are on a web page or not! "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I'm seeing more of the danglers appearing on regular web pages as well. There just as bad as the web ads that open up to half the friggin' page when you accidentally roll over them. Why not just resort to telemarketers calling me at all times of the day and night like the good old days, it's about as effective as that practice.

Ah, it makes me sick! We all got browsers that are capable of blocking pop-ups and now we get tons of pop-unders and roll-overs. Hugely annoying and I wouldn't respond to an ad like that out of pure spite!
