I need a new car

I am no expert on cars, so I am asking your opinions and advice. I just want to get basic transportation that is decent on gas. Further I don't drive a lot, just a moderate amount, so I don't want to spend extra for a hybrid. I can afford a new car, but definitely cheaper is better. Do you think maybe a Hyundai is a good choice?

Mbaya: your question is pretty hard to answer (also from this user as a longtime, former automotive journalist - in Europe - which can be much different from the deals/products in the US).
First: What are your and your familys needs in SIZE - even if you just want a basic transportation... AND how much money are you prepared to spend?
Hybrid - forget it - it's almost outdated.

Decent on gas! The American cars are out here too! So are the Japanese and most Korean, too - because of older engine technology.
Still you can get better gas-economy from some korean cars like Hyundai and Kia, than the japanese cars. Try take a look at the Kia Rondo (part of the Hyundai coorporation) - a car that has been compared to the VW Golf in Europe - compared in quality and mileage. It's called Kia Ceed here in Europe - and a damn fine alternative to the more expensive models...

Still: I do not know if you can get the german Volkswagen-models, wich also include the spanish SEAT and the czech Skoda (all from Volkswagen)in the States. One thing these car got in common is a great new engine - a 1,4 liters TSFI (gasoline - do NOT choose diesel if your needs are shorter drives during the day) - which has fine power and does like 23 km/l - which in US terms means something like 55-60 miles on a gallon...
This ONLY 1,4 liter engine is the latest in 'normal' gasoline engine technology - but still has power and a damn fine economy.

Try to browse this pro-site - you might get some fine info even as a non-member:
http://www.autonews.com/

Good luck
Denner
- and get back, if you need more info - I'd be glad to TRY to help... "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" Edited on Mar 25, 2010, 08:07am

My first recommendation is to go for this compact VW Golf:
http://www.vw.com/golf/en/us/
- and a 4-doors for less than 20.000 - you'll get top-quality and a damn safe/reliable car...even if it's at that size.

or maybe this Kia Rondo:
http://www.kia.com/#/rondo/explore/360-v...and-colors-exterior/

for the same - almost - price.

Still - between us here at PU - I would go for the german Volkswagen - you'll get better (much) value for your money in the long run..AND the quality/finish is still better in this VW Golf - (btw: the VW GOLF is the most sold car in Europe - for years) "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

I like the Golf and the Rondo. I have asked for price quotes on both. Thanks so much for your help.

Toyota - Moving forward (Sometimes faster than you want to)

Okay - Skipping Toyotas

I'm a truck man, but if it has to be a car, I'm a Mazda fan. I own a Protege that's been very good to me. I've looked on a bunch of forums to see who likes what and Mazda owners seem pretty happy with the durability and economy of their cars.

The Mazda 3 replaced the Protege and they run somewhere around 20K nicely dressed.

Hi RB, I amc hecking out the Mazda. What trucks have you bought? I used to drive a real truck, specifically a Grumman delivery truck. Comparing that to any car is apples and oranges.

I'm on my third and last Dodge Dakota. I run the piss out of 'em, hauling and towing, and they seem to last forever - except for the transmissions that seem to give up the ghost at 100,000 miles. So it's a new tranny at 100K and run it for another 100K.

I don't like the new body style on the Dakotas, so I was looking at Tacomas. But, with how Toyota handled the trouble with their cars, I'm kind of lost as to what I'm gonna get next. But I've still got a few years left on my '99 Dodge so I'm not too worried. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

If economy & build quality are high on the list, consider the Audi / VW 3 cyl turbo diesels. I think the VW ones are referred to as Blue Motion.

I have a 2004 Audi A2 1.4 TDI
90 BHP & an all aluminium body make it quite nippy ;0)

It has done over 70,000 miles still returns 55mpg on short runs & no squeaks or rattles.

Still very happy with it.

I quite like Hyundai. The company gets the condemnation of Clarkson and co. but I love their cars. Their small small compact cars are really economical and reliable. Edited on Mar 25, 2010, 11:41am

I have a 330 diesel BMW for all my long distance driving. It does 45 mpg and has done 175k miles since I bought it new.

All it has had is water pump, brakebits and some ball thingies on the suspension.

Lots of room when the seats are laid down too x

If you live in Northern climes the problem of road noise can easily be overcome by talking a dealer into undercoating the car. When I bought my Hyundai Accent I told the dealer I found it a bit noisy and she gave me the above free of charge. It really dampened the sound quite a bit. Of course, on the left coast you wouldn't need or want that. Edited on Mar 25, 2010, 07:04pm

Regarding your tag line, just because doesn't make sense to you doesn't mean that no one else can get it.

Does the concept "got a wild hair up the ass" mean anything to you, or is that gibberish too, you little speck? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I know everyone is having a good laugh (or possibly a scary-as-hell stuck accelerator problem) but Toyotas are still as about as reliable as cars can get. They don't sell well because of styling--kinda bland if you ask me--or because they can stroke the ego of consumers with too much money in their wallets--Hummer has that covered--but they do have models with both great mileage and reliability.

I agree that haven't handled their recent problems too well but I don't think it ever affected trucks or SUVs. I have heard their Tacoma pickup (called Hilux everywhere else) has quite the reputation for extreme long term ruggedness, though trucks are not the way to go for decent gas mileage. That's good to know, even though I'm really not looking to buy. I really haven't done much looking at what all's going on in the truck market. But, by the time I'm ready, there'll be a lot of changes, so who knows what'll be the hot truck.

I don't think anyone buys a truck for mileage. That's why I wound up buying a car - to commute to work and run errands. It sure would be nice if I could tow a boat and haul lumber in the Protege! Taking it easy, the truck gets about 10 MPG highway when pulling even a small boat. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Wish I could have a "Bimmer" but in North America, especially in Canada, BMWs and Audis are sinfully expensive. I've had to settle for VWs and Mazdas and Hyundais. Neither of these cars ever did me wrong so I shouldn't complain.

DOH!

Quick go back and edit your post. On the other hand I think you are right. What happens is you get the occasional bunch of shills or wind up artists, but the forum ethos doesn't change because the core of very different people wont let it change. No matter what happens, they will hang on to civility and intelligent argument. It would take an awful lot to change that because the core here will not let that happen. That includes 2nd wave members like myself and Ik2fireone, and newer members like Capn. New blood is joining all the time and these new members have that same belief in how members should behave.

I'd recommend a Hyundai or Toyota. Hyundai because they are trying to get more of the North American market so you can often find some amazing deals to be had and they've been in the business long enough to have some very reliable cars. Toyota because they still make very good cars. There was a time where I would have added the Honda Civic but I have a 2004 and frankly I've had a couple of serious problem with it that have soured me toward the Civic. The Accord is just too expensive for me. Long live the Brown Coats.

I do agree with ControllingMind on the Civic Type R, that's some hot shit.

Not sure what this whole dispute with Drooler is about, however.

I'm surprised no else mentioned Hondas on here. Mine is a family of Hondas (still is) and we drove the crap out of all of them and never ran into any problems. Although I will say I have heard their early 2000's SUVs have clutch problems.

The Civic Si is a blast to drive, and you can get one a couple years old reasonably cheap. Although it only comes in a 6-speed manual if that'd be a problem for you, but what's the fun in driving without a manual transmission? Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

What Turboshaft and Wittyguy are saying makes sense to some extent, but I would mention that there are lots of reasonably priced cars that are also fun to drive - a used WRX being a great example. You don't necessarily have to pay out the ass for a car that is enjoyable over a car that is "reasonable" especially if you shop around. To me a car like that which is fun to drive and only moderately more expensive is totally worth it.

I certainly would never spend the money on a luxury car, in the states it seems as though BMWs are for old school and new age yuppies. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

Hyundai and Kia are both well built well equipt and often over looked vehicles. I bought a Kia ( over a Ford or Chevy my normal buys).
My kia out powers out pulls and get better mileage and is loaded and 15,000 less then its american counter part. They make nice small
vehicles equal to a civic and allot less. Since 2007

I have driven Toyotas for the past 20-25 years. Started with a Corolla GTi (better performance than the Golf GTi at the time). Went on to a Carina E GTi (no longer made, filled the gap between Corolla and Camry). Had a Nissan 200SX for a couple of years - great fun rear wheel drive 2 litre turbo, but not very practical when you have kids. Currently drive another Toyota, Lexus GS300 which I have had for just over 10 years and 100,000 miles. Brakes have been the only problem with it - heavy car is heavy on the brakes. Not had a mechanical problem with any one of them, and not bad on the petrol (Lexus is not great, but then it is a 3 litre 6 cylinder heavy car)

Thanks to everyone for their ideas and positive input. I am leaning towards a Hyundai at the moment. I probably will be ready to buy over the summer. For now I am still driving my car from 1999 that still runs.
