GOLDEN AGE OF PORN In case some of you numnuts weren't aware, there was a brief 15 year period from 1969-1984 when porn movies were shown alongside mainstream movies in theaters. Of course, these movies weren't actually porn like we got today, but rather actual movies of relative quality featuring lots of explicit fucking. And in case you were aware of it, then cool! I SAW EMMANUELLE AND THE STORY OF O IN A REGULAR MOVIE THEATER BACK IN THE 1970S. IT WAS NOT A PORN THEATER, OR AN ARTHOUSE THEATER, BUT A REGULAR MOVIE THEATER. I THOUGHT BOTH MOVIES WERE GREAT. GOOD PLOT, GOOD ACTING, GOOD CAMERA-WORK. THEY WEREN'T THE EXPLICIT PORNO MOVIES OF TODAY, MORE OF A SOFTCORE/HARDCORE VERSION. | |

Most of the cinemas would charge at least double for the porn movies as they knew they would sell out. There are many porn movies which grossed much more than the mainstream releases back in the day. I saw a few of the Emanuelle movies in theater as well as on late night TV. Same goes for Story of O which starred the Future Bond Girl from Moonraker Corrine Cléry. Almost any movie starring Edwidge Fenech would have played in an 18 or older theater. My favorite porn movies are probably all from mid 70's to late 80's. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

I never saw any porn movies in movie theatres, but I have seen much of - but not all of - Debbie Does Dallas as well as Story of O and Emmanuelle (more than one but can't remember which ones). I think Story of O was the best of that bunch. I also watched Pasolini's 120 Days of Sodom which I thought was a good film - although, that is much more of a "film" than Debbie Does Dallas, which originally started off this thread. | |

At 50 I'm still a bit on the young side to remember those days, and especially so since the 'community standards' of the place I lived weren't open to anything like this. We had a porn shop open up in the mid-1980s and they were raided several times in the first week. I recall seeing a documentary years ago where it was mentioned that the idea was that there would be a blurring of the lines between Hollywood movies and porn, so that you and the Missus could head to the movie theatre to watch the latest thriller and also see some hardcore sex thrown in to ... ummm... advance the plot. Obviously that never happened as planned. I generally don't like plot-based porn so I recall the breath of fresh air that the first gonzo directors brought to porn. Some of the early John Stagliano and and Joey Silvera stuff was amazing. Many later gonzo directors just got lazy, but give me well done gonzo any day. | |

^I don't think you will see actual hardcore sex scenes in mainstream movies any time soon but the idea seems to pop up from time to time. Seeing that most celebrities and especially actors and actresses make more money from their name brand than they do from making movies means that they will never do anything that might affect that brand. 9 Songs (2004) Kieran O'Brien Love (2015) The first mainstream movie with porn shot in 3D Nymphomaniac (2013) Shia LaBeouf Ken Park (2001) The Brown Bunny (2003) Chloe Sevigny Shortbus (2006) Over 300 mainstream independent films have real sex shown in them. I do think the line between porn and mainstream has been crossed many times. I also remember Debbie Does Dallas played at a local theater which my sister went to. Let me premise that in no way do I disagree with your list but see below why those examples aren't a good sample on which to base a theory that the line between porn and mainstream cinema is getting thinner.
What do the above 3 movies all have in common? They are all European. You could easily add 3 or more movies to your list where there is just as much if not more sexual intercourse happening. Europeans have always threaded the needle when it comes to incorporating various levels of sex in their movies going as far back as Caligula adding actual sex scene post production. The other noticeable thing that I want to point out is that for the most part the sex scenes in these 3 movies all star fairly unknown actors. Some of them may have some big names but they certainly aren't having actual sex in their scenes.
Of these 3 movies only Chloe Sevigny is a well known and well established actress and although she did shoot an oral sex scene with the director/actor. I seem to remember that they tried to downplay that part of the movie and it can also be argue that Chloe paid a hefty price for doing that BJ scene because she was more or less blackballed in Hollywood.
