The Rise of Skywalker coming to a theater near you.

Flash news: The Rey story is coming to an end.
Make sure you have the money to buy a ticket to watch this world-shattering event to know how the future is unfolding.

This film is probably even more important than the rise of Adult Time, the force changing the world of internet porn.

I've seen photos of Daisy Ridley, the actress who plays Rey, and she is gorgeous beyond belief.

One glance from her amazing eyes would destroy any dark force forever.

Praise be to the force.

Edit: I only saw the first Star Wars movie, where I had to stand in line for hours to go inside the theater. I thought 2001: A Space Odyssey was a much better film. But Star Wars launched a billion dollar empire of films, books, toys, etc. While 2001 had minimal impact, evidently. I also enjoyed the original Dune movie by David Lynch. I read the Dune novel back in the 1960s, and was a fan of the book series. Although after Frank Herbert died, I didn't enjoy the Dune books his son took over.

Only a single viewer clicked on this thread.

Does that mean that Star Wars is losing its popularity, at least among PU members?

Star War movies are still among the biggest blockbusters.
But I'm guessing that many or most PU members don't go to the movies very often.

High ticket prices, disappointing movies, are probably the reasons for low PU member attendance at the movies.

As well as the choice to see movies at home through cable or or other steaming choices.

I also will be anxiously awaiting the next Star Wars installment. I remember when I saw the first one oh so many years ago and thinking that it was the visual realization of what I thought SF should look like. The story and the settings were fitting tributes to Robert Heinlein and Poul Anderson.

I would like to get my hands on a copy of Dune (the film, I've read the books). None of the various streaming and DVD services seem to have it available.

Enough of this. This conversation most likely belongs on one of the many SF blogs instead. I did enjoy the memory, however. Thanks. The Collector

LKLK, I disagree that most films are disappointing, but will agree that high ticket prices have a negative effect on people wanting to sit in a crowded theater as opposed to watching films at home.

I don't care about Rise of Skywalker. I saw the preview at a recent movie and literally groaned, "Oh God, please, no."
The Force Awakens was mediocre, and The Last Jedi a hot mess of garbage. I have little hope that Rise of Skywalker will be a quality film.

I agree that Daisy Ridley is a major babe, but even so, that's not a great incentive to watch a mediocre movie. I can easily stay home and watch one of my porn films, almost all of which have major babes who take of their clothes.

The Collector, if you watch David Lynch's Dune movie, try to get a copy with the extended intro about the Butlerian Jihad and the defeat of the machines. It's about half an hour of exposition about the Dune universe and well worth watching. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

There are multiple versions of the 1984 movie Dune (by David Lynch).
You can buy a DVD version on Amazon or other sites.
Or you can buy a streaming version of the 1984 movie at Amazon or other sites.

Ebay also sells DVDs of the 1984 Dune movie, and sometimes offers different versions of that film.

There are also other films/movies/whatever on the Dune series:
Children of Dune was a TV miniseries, that's on DVD.

I've also read there is going to be a re-boot of Dune as a movie, coming out late 2020.

I actually own the Amazon streaming version of Dune (1984).
Streaming versions are easier to keep track of, and don't need a DVD player. Some of my computer DVD players have stopped working, so it's nice to have a streaming version. (As long as your internet connection doesn't go on the fritz.)

LKLK -

Do any of the versions you reference have the Butlerian Jihad intro that Loki mentions? The Collector

^If you want to watch a 3 hour edited version of Lynch's 1984 movie than you simply have to visit You Tube. I saw that version on TV at least 20 years ago. The narrated storyboard portion at the beginning of the movie was quite interesting has it explained why machines are outlawed and why you have two schools dealing with the way humans think.

I always liked Lynch's version but it veered so drastically from the novel that I enjoy it more because it is visually beautiful to look at. The Fremen, their stillsuit and the worms being the most amazing thing while the weirding way being the most hard to watch.

Denis Villeneuve has already finished filming his take on the novel. That's the good news. The bad news is that it is only scheduled to be released December 2020. Long live the Brown Coats.

I saw the 1984 Dune movie in the theaters.
I also own a streaming version of that movie from Amazon.

But I don't remember ever seeing an extended version of Dune with the extended intro about the Butlerian Jihad and the defeat of the machine.

And I don't know how you would be able to buy a version of the 1984 Dune movie with that extended intro.
The seller would have to explicitly state the version contains the extended intro.
And most descriptions for Dune don't.

Maybe Loki could help about finding the version of Dune you are looking for.
Where to find it, how to identify it.

You could send Loki a private email. The PU site is supposed to have a system where you can send private emails to its members.

There were changes/edits made to the 1984 film that was released, and David Lynch didn't like the changes. He didn't have final cut control, and he dis-avowed the film.
The film does make some changes from the novel, but that is to be expected: the novel was very long, with massive details that could not be filmed in a single movie. But I enjoyed the movie when it came out, and still think it holds up as a very good science fiction movie.
That's just my opinion.

The 1984 film bombed when it was released, and David Lynch has stated the released version was not what he wanted. He even had his name removed from the film in some versions, using a pseudonym for the director.

Whatever.

I'm not a geek. I just enjoyed the film.
Far more than I enjoyed Star Wars, which I thought was boring.
Different strokes for different folks.
(I started reading SF in my pre-teens, and read it extensively for over 20 years. So I came across Dune in the 1960s, and thought it was a great novel. And didn't understand why the Dune movie was such a flop. But the 1984 Dune movie has become a cult classic, for what that's worth.
Vertigo (the Alfred Hitchcock movie) was a flop when it was released, and is now considered one of the great crime movies of all time.

The current consensus among fans is that this latest S W movie is a pile of poo. The only argument seems to be just how large and odorous it is but it's going to stink. In large part because you can't undo what the previous movie did. The Force Awaken was a decent movie albeit being mostly a soft reboot of the original Star Wars with new and old characters being introduced. The Last Jedi basically decided to veer in a completely different direction thereby nullifying everything that was done in the previous movie. I don't care how great a filmmaker thinks he is. You can't put Humpty Dumpty together when the previous guy pushed him off the ledge. Han is dead, Luke is dead and sadly Carrie died in real life so it made it impossible for them to use her beyond using a lot of CGI and possibly so stuff filmed and never used.

I have zero desire to watch the last Jedi and while I used to enjoy The Force Awakens. I can't watch it anymore because I know what comes afterwards. Long live the Brown Coats.

TheCollector--Try "Dune Extended Edition" on Amazon or EBay. I'm not sure it has the storyboard beginning, but it's the longer version of the film, not the shorter theatrical release, so it's possible this is the one with the extended beginning. I just went and saw "Midway". CGI is awesome and that is where it ends. As my friend, who went with me, said, "History dumbed down." This is the state of the film industry now. I won't being seeing any Star Wars films in the near future. It was sad seeing some of the major events that caused the victory being ignored. Warning Will Robinson

biker, I saw "Midway" last week. I thought it was a good movie that was mostly historically accurate. It wasn't spectacular, but a decent film. Sorry you didn't like it. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

It must be extremely difficult (if not impossible) for a film director to accurately recreate a universe in the manner envisioned by the author of the text. That, I think, was one of the advantages of the early Star Wars stories: they were not trying to copy a universe, rather Lucas could create it fresh from scratch.

The Game Of Thrones series did a reasonably good job with the universe created by Martin, but then it's Fantasy and not hard SF.

I don't usually enjoy reading Fantasy but I do enjoy watching it (some of it at least). I try to keep in mind Clarke's First Law: "Any Sufficiently Advanced Technology Is Indistinguishable From Magic". The Collector

^Some novels are hard to accurately bring to screen because so many of the things in them can't easily be translated into a visual format. This is especially true with inner monologues. On paper they are great because we get to see what the protagonist is thinking during certain situations but how do you shoot that?

Dune is not necessarily hard to translate into a visual format but because it is such a complex novel where it is ill-advised to skip most of what is in it that it lends itself better to a mini-series than a film but the budget for such a series would be so extensive that no one would be willing to pay it.

You can argued that George had an easier time with the first SW movies because he was basically writing the rules as he was going but I would argue that later films had an easier time because they didn't have to come up with the rules. All they had to do is follow them but Georges threw a wrench in the machine when he broke most of the rules he had written when he did the prequels. Is it any wonder that the films that came after those are rudderless?

The three most recent movies are good examples of that because the source material is now corrupt and therefore trying to bring order to it is impossible. Long live the Brown Coats.
