Currently, even a new 500 GB external hard drive is selling on Amazon for over $60. Maybe you can pick up a used external hard drive on ebay (or one of its competitors) for less. But external HD for under $40 sounds very cheap. Maybe hard drive prices will fall some, after the New Year. I picked up a new 3 TB external Western Digital hard on ebay a little over a month ago, for $122. But that was just before hard drive prices began rising. | |

I personally have not had any experience buying a used hard drive, so I don't know how reliable they are, how long there are expected to last. And it also depends on which model or manufacturer you buy. Some of the Seagate hard drives have gotten poor reviews for reliability. I think there was at least one thread on hard drives before, that might have some ideas on buying a hard drive, but I don't recall how to find it, or if it really applies to what you want. The recent rise in hard drive prices is being blamed on flooding in Eastern Asia. So once the factories can get back in operation, hard drive prices should drop. But when that will be, I have no clear idea. Hopefully, sometime in the next year. If you do buy a used hard drive, check to see what kind of warranty it comes with. If there's no warranty, you will have little confidence in how long the hard drive will last. | |

I would be weary of buying a second-hand or reconditioned harddrive. You've got to wonder why they are being resold? Maybe I'm being paranoid there, but datastorage isn't something I would take risks with. I'd consider a 2nd hand monitor, speakers or printer, but not HDD. I know places like Amazon sell refurbished, some of the so called green drives do not hold up well according to reviews and are often available refurbished. I agree I prefer not to lose my date or the nearly $10gs worth of software I have on my pc either. Since 2007 | |

I've had two - both died within two months. But, if this is anything like any other forum where they discuss hard drives, you'll get people on both sides of the fence. Some will love a brand/model, some won't.
Online storage isn't the best solution for people with bandwidth caps. If I had a catastrophic drive failure on a heavily loaded 2 TB drive and had to download everything back to a new drive, I'd have to stop downloading anything else for about 7 months. To me, the best options are either setting up a RAID array or simply start regular copying of important files to drives that stay offline. I use the second method. I just lost a 1.5 gig and all I had to do was copy the files back from the externals. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity. | ||

I have one that's about four years old I think, so I guess my experience is good in that I've had it long enough to not even remember when I bought it. But I agree when it comes to hard drives the opinions get ridiculously polarized. Reviews from "I never buy anything else" to "I'll never buy this again!" aren't exactly helpful. Combine this with the wide range of uses people are putting them through and the fact that hard disk drives simply don't last forever and it can be kind of a gamble. Short of buying a higher end drive that's more for professionals (or people with big wallets) it can be kind of a crapshoot. Hell, I still use a 300GB Maxtor from 2005 for saving/backing up my more important stuff--i.e., it's the one hard drive lucky enough to have not been desecrated with my porn habit--and it sounds like a mosquito buzzing in my ear every time I turn it on...so who knows.
It's also not the best solution for us more paranoid downloaders out there. I don't need some company having direct access to my collection when I probably already have an Internet provider whose site history of me would probably make most people's hair stand on end.  I let Google rifle through my e-mails and pretend they really mean it when they say "Don't be evil" but I don't want to take that chance with what I choose to put on my hard drives. Hmm...maybe I should just finish my collection, move out to Montana and seclude myself in some walled-off compound while I argue with the voices in my head over what will really bring about the fall of America. Another good point! I do keep some files online - mostly programs I've paid for and would hate to lose. I just put 'em in encrypted zip files with file names that further hide their contents.

I will never use Cloud simply because I don't believe a single person that tells me my data is safe and can only be accessed by me and the people I authorized to do so. The reality is that a Cloud bases system is basically you storing all your personal data on someone elses drive. Possession is 9/10 of the law seems to apply when you have law enforcement agencies using the data they found on your computer so why would it be different for a Cloud based system. You can claim it's your data but since it's saved on their computer then doesn't it make it their data? Do you believe the people who own Facebook when they tell you that your personal information is private and will not be sold to anyone else? We already that's not tue and we also know that these crooks created programs to track you even when you aren't on Facebook. Long live the Brown Coats. | |
