Off Topic: Mad Magazine Yes, this is off topic for sure, but guess some older PUs along with this old PU once had a crush on Mad Magazine � Alfred E. Neuman, Don Martin � and all the other deals and great cartoons/cartonists.... Loved it, but lost all (a great, big stack of magazines) somewhere, sometime down the road.... And miss that great fun. Now I got the local �newsstand� to get me the latest copies � but what a bummer. Nothing's like it was � fine paper in full color � but that's it. And had to pay around $ 14 for a copy. Ok, there's still Spy Vs Spy, the great Sergio Aragon�s and Tom Richmond.... but a lot of boring/badly drawn cartoons ect. Any views � and anybody know where to get hold of old, old copies without getting ripped off..  "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" | |

Why do I get those weird symbols in my output? I'm guessing you are writing your post in some word processing program (Wordpad, Word, or something similar) and then copying the text and pasting it into the message block. And because the word processing program has format characters that are not recognized by the program that processes the message block, you get the weird symbols in your output. The same thing happens if you copy some articles posted on the web to a word processing program, then save the file. When you open the file to see the article you copied, you then see the weird symbols. But you don't see the weird symbols until you close the file and then reopen it. The weird symbols are not displayed when you paste the copied text, but are only displayed when you close the file and then reopen it. The same thing occurs when you paste copied text into the message box: You don't see the weird symbols when you paste the text. They only appear when the copy is stored and then brought up. If you type your post directly into the message block, instead of using a word processing program and pasting that into the message block, I'm guessing you won't see the weird symbols when the message is saved and then brought up for viewing. On the other hand, if you are decorating your posts with foreign symbols for added character, which could be called artistic license, then you might think of the weird symbols as individual expression. either that or type it in Notepad and then paste to the message block, notepad is plaintext so it takes out anything odd that might be in the word processing program. It seems needlessly complicated but there may be some reason why he's not typing directly into the box. As for Mad magazine, it has recently reappeared at my local newsagents so I've gotten the last few issues. Sure, some of the jokes were corny but thats almost what I expected, part of the charm of Mad. I don't have a nostalgic tie to it so I didn't get hit with a "not as good as it used to be reflex". Really, not many things are as good as they used to be, current music is mostly shit  And as for the price, it sounds like the OP is getting ripped off, it only cost me about 5 euro and stuff is usually more expensive in Ireland. | |

I used to get Mad all the time, and was a fan just like you Denner. I haven't read it for years, but from the sound of it, Mad is now a different magazine. Things change. The old magazine is dead but at least we have fond memories. Ebay/Ebid and comics/comix shops or dealers are possibly the best place to get the old ones. For me the beginning of the decline was when they started doing British spoofs just for this country. The American material was good enough for me. | |

My best Squirrel - you hit the nail on the head - in my views, too. Mad is no longer the fantastic/great black/white magazine we loved.... - and/but absolutely: we have fond memories... I was a big fan of Mad. Really brings back memories. All the TV show parodies weren't that easy to understand as I was quite young when I read Mad but Spy vs. Spy, Sergio Aragones and Don Martin I remember well | |

I had a little stack of MAD books a long, long time ago. Things like "How people see you." (The dentist just sees teeth hovering over a standing body; the boss sees ears but nothing else (no brain).) MAD was hilarious, along with National Lampoon and Cracked. I loved the MAD parodies of TV shows like Mannix ("Manic") and movies like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ("Botch Casually and the Some Dunce Kid"). And sure, we have The Onion now, but it's just not the same! BTW, let's not forget "Little Annie Fannie" in Playboy magazine in the 1960's. It was actually painted at first, not drawn, but the approach to humor was kind of similar to MAD, with lots of social parody from that time. I haven't seen one in years but I was a huge fan. I used to love trying to figure out what the last page would be about before folding it. I sadly sold or gave away all of my Mad magasines years ago but I still have many of the pocket books that Don martin and Sergi Aragon did. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

What a coincidence that this topic came up. I'm in the middle of a major house clean out right now and came across 15 or so Mad books that I remember reading over and over again. Now the big question is whether to keep them for the nostalgia, reading 'em once again, then let 'em go back to collecting dust or try to sell them. Mad magazine disproves the British idea about Americans that they don't have a sense of irony. There's wonderful irony and sarcasm in some of those spoofs. I think Mad must have been inspiration for the Airplane (and similar) send ups. There are some very witty and clever Americans out there. The only negative about Mad was I thought what a waste of talent, seeing something that clever in a mag, where very few would be able to appreciate it. Was anybody else into the really early Harvey Kurzman era Mad Magazine - before the Comics Code de-fanged everything? Their satires of Archie, with the whole group as juvenile delinquents complete with switchblades, were great acidic satire. And the artwork was really sexy - man, Betty & Veronica drawn by Mad's artists with their boobs practically bursting through their tight tops definitely got my adolescent juices flowing. | |
