Home groups. Who are these guys, and why are they in my computer?

Hopefully, a tech-guy out there can tell me how these guys got into my computer ... and more importantly, do I need them?
These intruders are saying my computer belongs to a home group, and further that they're not available to me because I'm not connected to the Home network.
Everywhere I go I'm seeing "shared." Its all news to me because I certainly didn't give them any authority to "share" anything.

Not only are they (shared) uninvited, but they, and/or perhaps other invaders, seem to have taken control of my operating system.
For example, I click onto a particular file or unfamiliar program I've discovered only to be told that "I don't have permission to access it." Denied, mind you, asking me, (sole owner and supposed administer if you will) for an unknown password I never initiated.
A sizable number of folders containing older, stored downloaded porn files have mysteriously vanished. All, seemingly pillaged folders have little icons of a padlock attached to them and labeled "empty."
Amazingly These unabashed crashers seemingly are throwing their weight around like I'm just simply in their way.
I've got very good anti-virus and malware protection, but neither have addressed this being a possible problem.

This is but one of other seemingly other frustratingly similar 7 series system pests that are taking up residence.

Some would-be experts whom I've addressed this to wants me to believe its all in my head.
Anyway, having seen answers to other tech inquires made here, I thought I'd give it a shot by throwing it out to the real experts.

Homegroup is what Microsoft released so home users could share printers, files and other resources more easily.

I've never played around with homegroup, i have a domain setup at home. So i am not familiar with common homegroup issues.

Some information on homegroups

HomeGroup from start to finish

Video: Sharing files with HomeGroup
Why network?

If you wish to leave the homegroup, this link has a video tuturial on how to leave the homegroup.
Leave a homegroup

I do not think you have a virus or anyone else has gained access to your computer, homegroup is a bit of a bitch and likes to set it self up.

Also with your porn and other folders/files going missing or saying their empty, i think that could be incorrect security permissions on those folders/files.

Once you leave the homegroup and you are still having issues accessing those folders/files or are still being prompted for a password, there may be something else wrong with your system (incorrect security permissions).

If you are still experiencing these problems, can you find an .exe you were getting "Access Denied" messages with.

Right click the exe and go "Properties", then go to the "Security" Tab, then click on "Advanced"

A new window should appear, can you take a screenshot of that and post it back here, and can you do it for a folder thats missing files or a folder with the padlock icon.

After that, you can check if you are in the correct security groups (This will confirm if you are in the administrators group on your local PC).

Open up a command prompt window, in the start menu search for cmd.exe or command prompt, once launched a black box with text should appear. Type this into that and press enter (check that everything is spelt correctly.
whoami /all /fo list > c:\users\public\information.txt

This will list all information about what security groups your current user account is in, and put the output into a text file at this location c:\users\public\information.txt. Once you have completed that could you post the contents of the txt file back here. Edited on Jul 27, 2013, 09:10pm

Many, many thanks, Josiah for your prompt, detailed presentation of how to approach and address this matter.

I appreciate your swift reply and especially the beautifully laid out way you explained it all.

We'd sure like to see more of you in our forum.

Have someone local check out the computer.

There are such a wide range of reasons you might be seeing what you're describing, that cannot be figured out over an internet forum.

One "for example" I've run into a few times, hard drive is going bad, causes corruption in a file or two in your user profile, Windows cannot log in to that profile and automatically generates a new user profile to get you on and using the system. Since you're on a new user account, some of the folders created by the original account are no longer immediately accessible to you.

There's no point wasting money on a local IT guy, I can help him easy enough over the net, and if it is a security permission problem that's an easy fix.

In my experience with corrupt HDDs, files don't delete themselves. If a HDD starts getting bad sectors, the HDD will try re-map those sectors to spare sectors (these spare sectors are set aside for that reason).

If the HDD can't re-map the sectors, and you start getting bad sectors (Not re-mapped ones), you won't be able to read/write data to the sector. If the sector already has data on it (A file or movie etc), the file will become corrupt.

The only time I've seen files delete themselves/ or the drive wiping itself, has been with SSD's. I have seen partition issues with HDD's, but if it was a partition issue, Graymane probably wouldn't be able to access the drive at all.

If it was a failing HDD's i can still help him, he can run some tests which checks the HDDs health.

Graymane, did you remove yourself from the homegroup successfully?

Are you still getting an access denied message?

My apologies, Josiah ..... But for age related ill-health issues I have no control over that's currently on the attack, I've unfortunately been unable as yet to tackle the problem using your instructions.
It looks like I won't get at it until sometime later during the day. ... assuming I'm feeling better.
I'd suggest you check the thread in the later hours ...that is if you're already on this site.
Again, thanks for your help.

Acknowledging also, a very worthy, and active fellow member: anyonebutme .......let me say I am equally as grateful to you for including your extraordinarily helpful information concerning my quest.
I salute you both.

"Great balls of fire!"
Ahoy Josiah! Your first option worked!
Followed your first option: "If you wish to leave the home group, this link has a video tutorial on how to leave the home group."
Gotta tell you, they flat didn't want to leave. Kept throwing buttons at me to click on about what I'm missing, an' all.

I'll now go through some of the multitude of said inaccessible closed files to see if this worked.
Stay tuned, Josiah ...... can't wait to savor the final results.
