Prepaid cards

Unless I misunderstood, it was mentioned somewhere here that using a prepaid card when joining a site prevented recurring charges. Is that true? Even if there is enough available on the card to cover the recurring charge?

There seems to be only a handful of reputable credit card processors. I find myself not joining sites that aren't using a such a processor. I would like not to worry about such things as I'm sure we all would.

If the above is true, is there a recommended card? I never used a prepaid card.

I HAVEN'T USED A PRE-PAID CARD MYSELF.
I THINK THERE ARE CHARGES TO USING A PRE-PAID CARD, BEYOND THE AMOUNT YOU PAY FOR THE ACTUAL CREDIT ON THE CARD.

BUT MY GUESS IS THAT YOU ONLY PUT ENOUGH CREDIT ON THE CARD TO COVER THE COST OF THE MEMBERSHIP.
THAT IS HOW YOU AVOID OVERCHARGES AND RECURRING CHARGES.

IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH CREDIT ON THE CARD TO COVER THE RECURRING CHARGE OF A MEMBERSHIP, I WOULD ASSUME THE CARD WOULD BE CHARGED THE RECURRING CHARGE.

If you can be billed for a recurring charge if there's money available on the card, I don't see how it's practical. You'd have to keep the card funded under about $30 which seems highly impractical. Or maybe I'm missing something.

I DON'T THINK YOU'RE MISSING SOMETHING.
BECAUSE THERE ARE FEES ON A PRE-PAID CARD BEYOND THE CHARGE FOR THE AMOUNT OF THE CREDIT, I'VE NEVER USED A PRE-PAID CARD.

BUT EVIDENTLY, SOME PEOPLE FEEL IT'S WORTH THE FEES, FOR THE SECURITY OF DEALING WITH A SITE THEY DON'T FULLY TRUST, AS INSURANCE THEY WON'T BE CHARGED EXTRA.
SOME PEOPLE HAVE REPORTED THEIR REGULAR CREDIT CARDS WERE CHARGED $50, $100 OR MORE IN FRAUDULENT CHARGERS.
AND SOME PEOPLE MIGHT BE EMBARRASSED EXPLAINING THE CHARGES ARE FOR A PORN SITE, TO THEIR CREDIT CARD COMPANY.

SO THINK OF A PRE-PAID CREDIT CARD AS A FORM OF INSURANCE, INSTEAD OF USING A REGULAR CREDIT CARD.
THERE ARE EXTRA FEES, AND IT'S LESS CONVENIENT, BUT A PRE-PAID CARD LIMITS YOUR LIABILITY TO WHAT CREDIT IS ON THE CARD.

ALSO, SOME PEOPLE MIGHT NOT QUALIFY FOR A REGULAR CREDIT CARD.

SO THERE ARE DIFFERENT REASONS THAT MIGHT APPLY FOR CHOOSING A PRE-PAID CREDIT CARD.

I READ AN ESTIMATE THAT THE PRE-PAID CREDIT CARD INDUSTRY WAS $168 BILLION IN 2015.
SO A LOT OF PEOPLE USE THEM.
AND IT'S NOT JUST FOR PORN. Edited on Feb 18, 2017, 07:52am

Gotcha, thanks. I guess I'll stick with my current habit of only joining sites that use trusted processors.

They can't charge a prepaid card if there's no money in it. They also can't charge a debit card from a bank if you have it set up so they can't take money out if there's no money to cover it.

I use prepaid card now on all porn sites with no problems (so far). I usually cancel if I do not want to be charged again as you may get declined by the company in the future.

An easy way is to go for the one time charge if they have it. It costs a little more, but you won't forget about it and have to worry in the end. "Dogs think people are Gods. Cats don't as they know better." - Kedi (2016)

Sorry, I must be missing something. Why have a card with no money in it?

To set the record straight, I'm referring to sites that have recurring memberships that for whatever reason, will not cancel a membership upon request. It is against credit card regulations to not allow cancellation. Reputable processors abide by the rules. Disreputable ones make it difficult or impossible to cancel.

You load only the amount of money you wish to spend. That way they can't charge you for something you don't want.

I only load my cards when I intend to go shopping. Otherwise their balances are only a few cents each.

You also must make sure your bank does it this way. Some allow charges to go through (adding extra fees as well). They are required to not allow this to happen if you notify them otherwise. "Dogs think people are Gods. Cats don't as they know better." - Kedi (2016)

Sorry to belabor this but I'm not getting it. Or perhaps such a card is not intended for my purposes.

I simply want the card to prevent recurring charges (when a site won't cancel a subscription) and fraudulent use. Is it practical to reload the card with a small amount, i.e., $50, every so often for the purposes of joining a site? I would think there is a fee involved with reloading and that would make the cost prohibitive.

GO TO YOUR LOCAL WALMART (AND PLENTY OF OTHER STORES THAT SELL PRE-PAID CARDS) TO SEE WHAT THE FEES ARE.

I DON'T THINK THE FEES ARE VERY HIGH.
I'VE NEVER USED A PRE-PAID CARD (EXCEPT FREE-ONES THAT I GOT FROM SOME PROMOTION).

BUT PRE-PAID CARDS ARE VERY POPULAR.
LIKE I WROTE, PRE-PAID CARDS ARE A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY.

YOU CAN RELOAD YOUR CARD IN SMALL AMOUNTS, FOR A SMALL FEE.
MAYBE $3 AT WALMART.

OBVIOUSLY, IT'S NOT AS CONVENIENT AS A REGULAR CREDIT CARD, BUT THIS IS INSURANCE AGAINST FRAUD AND FALSE CHARGES (AS LONG AS YOU CONTROL THE CREDIT ON THE CARD TO KEEP IT SMALL).

SO IF YOU DON'T MIND PAYING A SMALL FEE, IT MIGHT BE WORTH THE EXPERIENCE, TO SEE IF THE IDEA IS PRACTICAL FOR YOU.

THE FEE TO RELOAD THE CARD SHOULD BE SMALL, IN DOLLAR TERMS.

NOTE: MAKE SURE TO CHECK HOW TO USE THE CARD, WHERE IT CAN BE USED, HOW IT CAN BE USED. THAT IT CAN BE USED TO PAY FOR A PORN SITE SUBSCRIPTION, SINCE THAT'S THE MAIN REASON YOU WANT THE CARD. I DON'T MEAN TELLING THE CARD COMPANY YOU WANT TO PAY FOR A PORN SUBSCRIPTION, JUST THAT YOU WANT TO PAY FOR AN INTERNET ONLINE SUBSCRIPTION. Edited on Feb 20, 2017, 08:03am

I do not pay a fee for my card as I get it through my bank. Some banks do charge a maintenance fee but others don't. I also load the amount I want in the card by transferring money from my checking account to the card. I control what goes in there so no one can take any if they do manage to steal my information.

The card is set so it can never go over what the balance is. It will decline a purchase if there is no cash to cover it.

I don't know what banks you use so it is best to ask your customer service or visit the site.

You can also purchase prepaid cards at many stores with many charging a fee of at least $5 US.

If someone does manage to steal the information, you can always close the old card and get a new one.

I hope this has been helpful for you. I don't recommend using a debit card directly linked to a checking or savings account. A credit card is probably the best as you pay them after you receive the bill and can always refuse to pay. The problem with prepaid cards is the cash has been moved to them so you have an added hassle if there are problems. "Dogs think people are Gods. Cats don't as they know better." - Kedi (2016)

P.S. If the charge is $40 for the month, you would load $41 in the card so that only the amount you want is charged. "Dogs think people are Gods. Cats don't as they know better." - Kedi (2016)
