According to Russian film service Kinopoisk, people under the age of 16 will not be able to go see the movie in theaters without being accompanied by an adult. This comes three days after Vitaly Milonov, an MP of the United Russia party, asked the country’s culture minister to screen the film prior to its March 16 Russian release and to “take measures to totally ban” it if the film contains “elements of propaganda of homosexuality. | |

What I find interesting is that people are getting their undies in a bundle over some character being gay when the whole damn story is about a girl falling in love with an animal that speaks. Apparently beastiality isn't as damaging to populace as homosexuality. | |

I guess beastiality would only be a problem if the Beast was a woman. I don't care if there is a gay character in the movie but that doesn't mean that I'm not scratching my head as to why there is one. I mean last I heard Beauty and the Beast is suppose to be a fairy tale about a fair maiden who sees the beauty inside a hideous beast and this breaks the curse he was placed under. Disney went to the trouble of copying almost everything that is in the 1991 animated version and there is no mention of the sexual preference of any of the characters in that movie. Why make a live version of the animated movie and then add stuff that was never there in the first place. It doesn't add anything to the story and doesn't make the story any better for the LBGTQ community. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

THE MOVIE HASN'T BEEN RELEASED YET, SO OBVIOUSLY I HAVEN'T SEEN IT. MY TAKE IS THAT THE DIRECTOR WAS PROUD OF HIS CREATION OF A HOMOSEXUAL CHARACTER, AND WANTED EVERYONE TO KNOW WHAT HE HAD CREATED. OTHERWISE, MOST PEOPLE WATCHING THE MOVIE WOULD NEVER HAD CAUGHT ON THE INSIDE JOKE. SO, BY BRAGGING, HE GOT THE MOVIE A RESTRICTED RATING IN RUSSIA. I DON'T FOLLOW POLITICS THAT CLOSELY. DID NOT REALIZE HOMOSEXUALITY WAS REPRESSED IN RUSSIA. IT PROBABLY WON'T HURT BOX OFFICE SALES OF THE MOVIE, BECAUSE RUSSIA IS A SMALL MARKET. | |

Let me just say this, I saw the movie this week-end and although the character of Le Fou may have come across as "homosexual" he was no different than the character in the Disney animation who has a simple "man crush" on Gaston. They aren't having anal sex in the movie so I really don't see why this is such a big deal. He doesn't even admit to being gay and it was not in any way controversial. The movie is a masterpiece and I strongly recommend going to see it. | |
