Question re Internet Billing companies

Am I right in assuming that a huge majority of business for companies like CCBill and Epoch is porn driven? I buy a lot of stuff over the internet and have never seen anyone other than a porn site use a billing company.

The reason I was thinking about this is that I was just on CCBill to cancel a membership and the portal that linked into information for consumers had a picture of an attractive lass in jeans and a plaid sweater vest. Unless I'm waaaaay off the mark on what the average porn customer looks like, then these billing services must do some legitimate business too.

So what other uses are there for internet billing companies? Or should I just randomly approach late-20s women in jeans and sweater vests and ask if they too think that Videobox isn't posting enough anal videos?

Basically, I would have thought they would have been up for any online business.

Catalogue based?

Someone like Khan, who is in the adult business, might have an idea of the businesses CCBILL deals with.

I think you came up with a great intro line for attractive younger woman: "Miss (or Ma'am, if you want to try the formal approach), I do anal quite well. Would you care for a demonstration?"

I tried that once by offering free breast examinations to smaller-breasted women. It wasn't as well received as I had thought it would be. I have no idea why.

I would think that any site that doesn't want to have to deal with paying credit card companies' processing fees directly would deal with some type of internet billing company like CCBill or Epoch. So probably quite a few smaller-type e-tailers, but the bigger ones would process the payments themselves.

Having built a number of ecommerce sites, I'd agree with the above - I generally have a merchant account (an account directly with the credit card company) so I'd do the billing directly - this is always cheaper since you only pay the card company. But for folk that can't get one (company credit history etc is required), they use an intermediary like that, who will charge a percentage on top of the standard card processing fee.

Of course, most so-called mainstream businesses would use eg Paypal or WorldPay or something like that, that folk were familiar with; many might not have heard of CCBill, so regardless of jeans and plaid sweaters (which could easily be quite a turn-on for me) I suspect the bulk of their business is in adult sites. I do a lot of online shopping and have never come across them outside of porn, anyway!

And even for large adult sites that could easily do their own billing, CCBill is well-known in our, er, area of interest, so just as other businesses might use PayPal, adult sites using CCBill put customers more at ease than just giving your card details directly to the site.

Probably more than you wanted to know Edited on Dec 14, 2010, 01:50am

If you go to shopping.ccbill.com, you choose between "general" and "mature" content and then type in keywords and get hits to sites. I tried "sunglasses" and then "power tools." Got 300 hits for each, though some of them didn't seem relevant, even at the top of the list. Each one seems to have a subscription price. One I got under "power tools" was for renting homes.

So that's a tiny slice of ccbill outside of, well, you know.

Epoch has a similar setup, "general" or "adult" sites. But when I tried to find things under "general" (coins, gold, power tools, home business, sunglasses, etc.), I drew a blank every time.

It's weird that you can't seem to browse, only search, on these sites. Maybe it's to keep costs down? You'd only use them starting from a merchant's site anwyay, I guess. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Dec 14, 2010, 05:29am

I don't have any inside info about CCBill but looking at their site, I found the same thing that Drooler did. When searching, remember that CCBill deals with subscription based sites, not places selling products.

My *guess* is that the lion's share of their business is adult sites. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Thanks for the information on this. I still think that the photo above the access for 'consumers' should more accurately reflect their customer base and be a photo of a pervert like one of us.

CCbill and Epoch also have mainstream billing offerings but they are done under other company names. CCbill was supposed to get the mainstream side billing for hard goods sometime this year. I dont know if that ever came off.
