Holy Christ cybertoad, do I ever thank you for raising this topic! I've wondered about this but never raised it before.

Obviously this will depend on how old you are, but that will make this thread more interesting. As usual, I reserve the right to add to my answer as the thread develops.

In order of missing them:

1. The Rockford Files. Ive been re-watching the series on Netflix and am really impressed how well the show has aged. Many shows from this era were absolute crap in terms of writing, acting and general production values. Not so here. An added bonus in season one are two appearances by Lindsey Wagner. Holy-fucking-moley is she over-the-top beautiful.

2. Adam-12. Best cop show until Hill Street Blues. It didn't stylize anything and just showed the job as it was it was then. I wish it was the same today. As a kid, this was the only show that would bring me in to sit in front of the TV.

3. Emergency!. Same as with Adam-12 (which were related) this was a great 'procedural' show.

4. The 20-minute workout. In junior high and high school I looked forward to getting the flu so I could stay home and watch this. No matter how sick I was I'd wank to this show.

Thanks again for bringing this topic up cybertoad!

The Professionals - still surprised that series hasn't been remade in modern style. The closest I can think of now is probably Spooks, but that just isn't as good. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Nice off topic thread, CT.

Close to 60 I'm quite fond of old TV series - and luckily we got a couple of Danish "old timer" TV channels that are into that.
Some Danish and German that few here would know - and then British..
And choose to buy DVDs with Monty Phyton's and Falwty Towers and a little Benny Hill (nice vintage bikini girls there, btw).

We now got The Rockford Files and the earlier Colombo at those "gourmet" channels. Great.

Would like reruns of:

Baretta
To Catch a Thief
Man From Uncle
Bergerac (John Nettles from Midsummer Murders)
Blackadder (thanks, Capn, forgot that one)

And then MAYBE:
Dallas
Dynasty
Soap
.........three, yes soap-deals that you/I may run away from, fast - and then maybe not? "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" Edited on Nov 18, 2011, 06:38am

Short list:

- The Young Ones (great outrageous Brit-com)
- The A Team (just because one can't enough of bad explosions, car wrecks and people walking away unscatched from a hail of bullets)
- Monty Python (will probably never be duplicated)
- MTV (when they actually played videos and had vj's)
- The Wild, Wild West (funny and interesting, unlike the shitty Will Smith movie remake)
- Gilligan's Island (mmmmm, Mary Ann or Ginger)(also, it got me pissed when some stupid thing called The Watergate Hearings pushed them out of their daily time slot for a while).

And maybe one or two also mentioned.

Americans value equal opportunity. The letter Z gets a lot more use here.

If the Brits had remembered to copyright their language, we Yanks would be paying huge royalties.

I wish they would get around to remaking "Blake's 7". I remember watching it as a kid and it beat the pants of Star Trek (original Trek, not so much the newer incarnations).

I bought the 1st two series on DVD recently and the script writing was excellent. Shame the special effects weren't so good. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Since I grew up watching the original Star Trek than the quality of the special effects aren't that important to me.
I've often found that good TV shows use imagination to overcome bad effects. I never got into Blake & and never will for only one reason. Everybody dies at the end of the show. It's bad enough when some shows kill some of the main characters but to kill everyone is excessive.

Unless they planned on going a very different route with a remake than I wouldn't bother watching. I know that in real life people die but I much prefer my TV shows and movies to be the kind where the heros win, get the girls and never die. Long live the Brown Coats.

I'm sure few people would complain if Blake's 7 was remade without the original ending.

Babylon 5 suffers a little from the silly ending, but there was a lot of good stuff on the way there. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

Yeah, my kind of show. I like escapist fare. No emotional burdens, thank you. Real life has enough of those. But I am feeling stupid because I never heard of "Blake's 7." When was that on and on which station??

Judd For the Defense. I loved watching him irritate the judge in every episode. He'd get really worked up about his cases.

The Untouchables: Robert Stack vs. Frank Nitty, again and again. Quite different from the movie with Kostner dropping him off that rooftop -- SPLAT!

Some of the other shows mentioned by others do still show up on cable channels.

But not Mannix. I watched that every night it was on when I was a kid. Something like 4 fistfights in every episode! Then Mad Magazine did a cartoon spoof called "Manic." At the end of it, someone asks him how he keeps his looks considering all of the punishment his face gets. Then he pulls off his face (a mask) to reveal what he really looks like. Hilarious! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Nov 20, 2011, 05:17pm

A major reason why I don't watch many TV shows these days is because some geniuses decided that it was OK to start killing the main characters in TV shows. I stopped watching NCIS because they did just that.

Below is the ending to Blake 7. Don't you just love You Tube sometimes? The show lasted 4 seasons from 78 to 81.

I'm a huge fan of Babylon 5. Other than one major cast change in season two. The bulk of characters remained the same throught the entire run of the show. The exception is season five but that one is easy to explain since the show was destined to be cancelled after the fourth season and that's why season 4 had a very specific ending and why they have another ending on season 5. I'm glad they did one more season because I really like the way they chose to end the series. The major cast change in season two was the replacement of Micheal O'Hare (commander Sinclair)with Bruce Boxleitner (captain Sheridan). There is no official reason but I gather that Mr O'Hare found the demand of the show too much for him and chose to leave. I can't complain because I have always been a huge fan of Bruce Boxleitner going back to the Tv show How the West was Won through Scarecrow and Mrs Kingand finally Babylon 5. Long live the Brown Coats.

Hey y'all, we forgot Laugh-In and the Smothers Brothers! Those were the days when you could litmus-test corporate power right in front of everyone! The Smothers Brothers was the highest rated show in its slot when it got pulled off the air. The material was getting a little too candid for comfort, to say the least. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Now these may be more Canadian than anything else so I'm not sure how many outisde Canada ever saw these shows.

Bizarre with host/comedian John Byner and the famous Super Dave Osbourne.

Wayne and Shuster. Now this was less a TV series and more a monthly special but those guys were comedic geniuses.

SCTV: Which is responsible for such amazing comedians as John candy, Eugene Levy, Rick Moranis, Andrea martin, Joe Flaherty, Harold Ramis, Martin Short, Dave Thomas to name but a few.

Royal Canadian Air Farce but more commonly known as simply Air Farce.

The Beachcomber which was basically a Tv show about log salvagers in British Columbia, Canada.

King of Kensington. Long live the Brown Coats.

I've never seen I Spy (Or even heard of it beyond the kids game of the same name), but I watched a repeat of the Saint recently and I have to say that it hasn't aged particularly well. It had Roger Moore playing the Saint, but I'm sure I remember a different guy playing that role. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

I wonder if somtimes it's not the shows that haven't aged well but us that have matured and changed beyond the point where we could enjoy them. I still love the original Star Trek with the crappy effects because the stories and the writting was amazing. The fact that they broached so many taboo subjects in such a way that you didn't necessarily reaslise that's what they were doing doesn't hurt either.

Roger Moore was the first Saint and probably the only one that people remember. He played the part from 62 to 65 and then from 66 to 69. Those last 3 seasons were in color while the first were in B&W.

They tried to relaunch the series in 78 with Ian Olgilvie but they only did 24 episode before the show was cancelled. Long live the Brown Coats.
