Porn search and security

A general search for porn at a lot of different, sometimes dubious sites is a risk - so we/our pc got to be protected.

Guess there are quite a number of experts here at PU, so this:

What is the best freeware....? And is any freeware good enough?

Got a new pc about a year ago and along came Norton 360 3.0 - if I have to renew the deal for another year, it's about $ 140 here in Europe...

But located some programs like AVG, Avast! and even Microsoft Security Essentials - all for free - and highly recommended a lot of places...but again....?

Like this:

What do the experts here at PU say....?

I'm not a computer expert.

I don't know which anti-virus is the best. Different opinions from different people. I use Norton Internet Security, which came with the last laptop I bought, and it does a nice job. But the description for Norton 360 seems very good.

The price you quote, Norton 360 3.0 in Europe for 1 year for $140 is completely ridiculous.

You can bid for the Norton 360 3.0 on ebay, and get the same progam for $30 plus shipping (free shipping if you only want the activation code). I see an offer of $30 from a buy-it-now seller, which means no bidding. The seller has 99.5% positive feedback and a rating number of 866 sales, which means the seller is extremely likely to be highly reliable. And the purchase is covered by Ebay buyer protection (as long as you use PayPal to pay for the purchase). There is no fee or charge to use PayPal to make an Ebay payment. With Ebay buyer protection, if there should be a problem, and you can't resolve it with the buyer, Ebay will refund your purchase price (and shipping price) within a month or so.

Also, this seller states he has sold the item (Norton 360 3.0) to European customers. So the activation code should work in Europe as well as in the United States.

The version being sold for $30 allows for installation on up to 3 PCs (some versions only allow installation on 1 PC, or some other number of PCs), with 1 year of updates.

Or you could bid on the item (Norton 360 3.0) from some other seller, and try to get it cheaper.

But $140 is completely ridiculous.

Edit01: I see a different offer, to sell the 3 PC, 1 year Norton 360 code from a buy-it-now seller for $18.99. That is for the activation code only (no box, no CD). But you already have the program installed on your PC. And if you need a new copy, you can download the program from Norton or a mirror site. No shipping fee on this offer (activation code will be emailed to you). When your current membership/subscription is ready to expire, enter the activation code and you will have extended your subscription for 1 more year.

This offer is also covered by ebay buyer protection (as long as you pay for the purchase with paypal).

This seller states the activation code is good for all language versions(German, French, etc).

If the code does not work for Danish, you can always learn German or French (joke). The code should work for Danish, if that is what is on your PC. Edited on Oct 14, 2010, 08:24am

I have been using Grisoft's AVG Free in its various iterations ever since I first went online in the mid 1990s.

I have been caught once with a nasty virus requiring a reformat, that would be in about 1998.

Providing you keep it updated & run regular checks it works fine.
I would still suggest backing up important files.
I have had more problems with harddrive failures than virii.

I run it in conjunction with a Driver Detective program to keep drivers up to date & Registry Booster to keep the registry in good health.

I have Norton 360 but I get it free so long as I stay with my current internet provider. I would say that paying $140 a year for it is entirely too much, you're much better off buying it somewhere else.

I know people who use the free app AVG without problems but I've been hesitant in the past to use it simply because I don't know how "on top of it" they really are when it comes to the latest threats.

A lot of antivirus / malware / etc. stuff is overrated when it comes to serious threats because it's a lot easier today to hide malicious crap in video embeds and other online postings than it has been in the past and antivirus doesn't always pick these up. When HTML 5 starts becoming more prevalent the next few years we'll see even more problems with these types of secret attacks.

From my perspective, if you're paying for antivirus you're probably a little more protected than going with the free stuff and you'll definitely get better customer service if you have a problem. In any case, this topic does serve as a good reminder that no matter what you use you still need to back up your data every now and then.

Use Firefox and install the NoScript addon. Only allow Javascript on the pages you trust and never download anything from sites you dont trust. That should protect you from 90% of the nasty things that dodgy websites can do to your PC, installing decent free antivirus software like AVG or avast! will help with the rest.

Nice and secure without spending a single penny The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

$140 is ridiculous? Shit, man - I just got my computer back from being repaired - cost me $140 for 2 hours work saving it from a virus infestation.

You know that virus going around that presents itself as a "your computer is infected - you must scan now!"? Well I had an intense attack by that sucker yesterday - 25 or more pop-ups in a few minutes - and at a certain point, it figured out that my computer was using Norton Antivirus and presented itself with the Norton insignia and I made the wrong decision.

Beware, my friends - these virus-writers are getting slicker and slicker in getting people to get infected. The guy who helped me out was an older Asian guy who has been working with computers for over 20 years. He said that he has seen recent viruses where a) you can't close your window without responding to them, b) answering "No" to their questions triggers the download, c) clicking the red "x" to close the pop-up triggers the download.

He said the only correct decision is to close your browser window as safely as you can without answering any questions or clicking anywhere on the pop-up - including by using the task manager to close your browser - and then restart your computer completely. Then do a full scan as soon as possible and make sure you have whatever system updates downloaded that come from a reliable source.

Dangerous shit, the internet

Consummer Report gave Avast anti-Virus the highest mark when it comes to anti-virus software and it's free. Long live the Brown Coats.

Do you have any idea of what site or program or download gave you the virus? So the rest of us can, hopefully, avoid that infection?

I use Norton Internet Security, which I hope will isolate/quarantine/delete any malware I mistakenly download. I haven't had any recent problems with malware, thankfully.

You don't necessarily need to go from $140 to free. What does McAfee cost in Europe? Maybe some reputable local brands?

I believe that it sprouted up when I clicked a link at 21Sextury.com, actually. I was browsing the site and clicked on DP Fanatics and all of a sudden, I was getting a pop-up about a virus on the site and my Norton Antivirus announced that an attack on my computer had been blocked - and then there was a barrage of dozens of pop-ups - including ones that started emulating my Norton anti-virus complete with the Norton logo. Even though my Norton anti-virus said that the heureristic Virus had been removed and the threat resolved and I had multiple messages that the attacks had been blocked, my computer was obviously infected. I couldn't get on the internet through any browser. Firefox said that my connection was routing to a proxy. And I couldn't connect to any Microsoft Security updates.

The guy who repaired it said that my saving grace was that the virus program was in there whole. So he was able to remove it once he found it without having data destroyed or having to take out my OS. And he did it in less than 24 hours as compared to the Best Buy's Geek Squad who told me they would charge $130 and have it fixed in 10 days.

I am totally unimpressed with Best Buys Geek Squad. When I needed a new video card they quoted me $120 and told me it would take a week. I went to a guy near my house who fixes computers and he sold me one for $25. He installed it in 10 minutes. I watched him twist some wires and that was all he had to do.

Just got rid of Norton - and yes, $ 140 for another year is ridiculous - even the uninstall/remove of the Norton is quite some work...but succeeded at last.
So just downloaded the latest AVG - it seems to work easy and fine - but only time will tell.

BTW: At some expert-websites here in DK it's claimed that all those register fix programs do not make your pc run faster?

I use the free CCleaner to clean up registry, but trying out other programs they always seems to find new and other problems - and to fix those - buy their program...it's a jungle out there.

And yes, like some said here: maybe the virus-thing is not the most serious - it's the breakdown where suddenly nothing works....guess that can never be prevented 100 %.

Another BTW: BadMrFrosty suggests NoScript addon (for Firefox) - then I Googled it in DK - and several inputs are: Problems with dealing with most sites and a lot of work everytime you hit a new site??
And some warned against the Driver Detective, but guess there are almost as many views as there are programs...

Anyway - just happy as long as the pc works smooth - and even with three external hard disks for the good stash, I hope I'll never be forced to reinstall Windows and ALL that goes with it - again. (Except whit a new pc, of course). "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle" Edited on Oct 15, 2010, 05:49am

Registry fix programs do not necessarily make it run quicker, just less prone to crashing.

That said if there are a lot of errors corrected, it will run quicker.
The first time I ran it it found 535 errors.
It was noticably quicker after correcting those.
It depends somewhat on your computer spec too.

FWIW I think you made the right move ridding yourself of Norton.
I have tried it a couple of times in the past & never got on with it.
It seemed to take over the computer.

I hope all goes well with your new Curtains.
( Windows?....fitted with curtains? It's alright, I've got my coat, thanks. )

Thanks, Cap'n

Yes, I do believe registry fixers are doing some good, by all means....
And guess I was somewhat lucky to get totally rid of the Norton - so it's on from here and crossed fingers....
