DUMBY dum dum!!!

All I can say is, those of you (and me) who have external hard drives in use, or are about to put your first one to use, save yourself some money and grief and try to remember that wherever and however you install it.....Do not, I repeat, DO NOT install it UPSIDE DOWN!!!!!!!!!!

Shooter - you may have just had a bad drive to begin with. It's not a common way to mount them, but upside down really shouldn't make a difference with today's hard drives. There are tons of articles, on a lot of forums, about this. Here's a good page to check out: http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/op/packOrientation-c.html

It seems the biggest danger in upside down mounting is something shorting out something on an exposed circuit board - something that really isn't too much of an issue in an external enclosure.

How does one install an external HDD upside down?

Really, please elaborate on you installing procedures. You got me curious.

How can you even tell which is upside down and what are you installing it into? It's external to your computer, right? I bought one a week ago because my computer was telling me that I needed to have a back-up of crucial files - which turned out to be about 50 gig of vids and pics - my computer has interesting tastes.

Are you talking about an external or internal hard drive? If you are talking about an external hard drive, all you do is plug it into your PC, and that is the installation. The external hard drive comes with its own separate casing, so if you want to lay it flat, or sideways, or in some other position on your desk, on the floor, or wherever, I don't know how much difference that will make.

But it really sounds more like you are talking about an internal hard drive, which would be installed inside the case of your PC.

Unless you were making a joke, to begin with?

I'm pretty lost here too.

If it's an external I'm not quite sure how it could be "upside down," only on it's side or standing upright (which usually saves some room, BTW). If it's an internal then I'm not sure how you could install one upside down at all given the orientation of the connections--i.e., power on one side of the end, data to the left/right of the that, etc. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it?
