The rise of tube sites and the decline of porn sales...

PORNOCRACY - That's the name of a new documentary released by former French porn star - Ovidie.
She's ranked 912 on Pornhub, just saying.

Get this, in her documentary she says that the rise of free tube sites, and she singles out Pornhub and others, has lead to the crappening of the industry.

Not too hard to understand why, even if you only have the faintest understanding of how business models work.

There's basically, for all intents and purposes, infinite porn for free on the internet. And so, this has led to a decline in sales and so too a decrease in the profitability of making videos and so in order to remain competitive, actors are performing increasingly hardcore scenes for less compensation.

Same thing happened to the music industry with Napster like a million years ago. What did they do? Found new economic models. It's not going to be easy, but they're going to have to.

I have no doubt that people will continue to buy porn, but if it's not marketed right, it just won't be what it use to be.

There's definitely some validity in what this French pornstar says, but much like happened in the music industry, not to mention the television and movie industries, her explanation is in an oversimplification of reality. It's not as dire as she says and perhaps it wasn't realistic to think that as the porn industry grew that performers would always be well paid - oversupply of people providing services leads to less demand and lower wages.

As to quality deteriorating, I find that questionable. Prior to tube sites there was an overabundance of choice when it came to porn and it could be argued that when it was being mass-produced quality wasn't actually so great. And in fact the sites that continue to survive or even thrive today have production values through the roof in comparison to their predecessors - or even their own older productions.

One thing that this argument about free or pirated digital content always lacks, no matter what industry one is talking about, is that once most distribution shifted from hardcopy to digital, the cost of distributing content was dramatically reduced. Of course, there is still bandwidth to contend with, but compared to paying for the production of DVDs and their shipping, it costs a lot less. And therefore the loss of profits is at least partially offset.

Really what has happened in many industries is that they've had to wake up to the fact that consumers will no longer pay for the same old, same old. And that if you're not going to deliver something as physically tangible as a packaged CD or DVD, people will expect value to be demonstrated by the actual content itself. Churning it out with little creativity just doesn't cut it anymore.

Oh, and it is worth noting that tube sites are not limited to showing pirated content. The major players in the porn industry all own their own tube sites and use them to promote their content. And if there wasn't a way of still making money, they wouldn't be spending time and money on expanding and developing those channels. I think that they've all realized that it isn't just a question of "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" - I think that they've realized that there is money in them their hills!

If you want to see what is hurting the porn industry then go here.

https://www.forumophilia.com/

Tube sites are nothing compared to these porn forums. Just page through this one and you'll see you can get every kind of porn out there for download at no cost. You're not just getting a six minute clip, whole movies are available and just after they have been released. Every popular website has their entire inventory made available to become part of your collection for no cost except the time to download them. Warning Will Robinson

One thing I will say about tubesites is that they are annoying and there are always popups. I would always opt for paying a monthly membership for my porn viewing than waste time on tube sites. However, tube sites do make porn easily accessible to impressionable minds. I don't know enough to comment on the effect it has on the industry, but I do agree that they should implement more rigid measures to avoid underage individuals from viewing porn.

Also, some porn sites ask large sums of money to join. Not everyone can afford this, so I can understand why they would turn towards tubesites because it's easy access.

What new economic model could they try? $20-30 for a single month and access to hundreds if not thousands of downloadable scenes that you can keep forever. It's probably the cheapest for-profit entertainment option available anywhere...ever.

Tube sites and file sharing sites both are having a massive impact. I thought I heard there is a push to make the tube sites illegal and it was gaining traction? Maybe I'm wrong on that.

A FEW YEARS AGO THERE WAS A CRACKDOWN ON FILE SHARING SITES.
THEY EITHER WENT OUT OF BUSINESS, OR STOPPED A LOT OF THE FILE SHARING PRIVILEGES.

THERE ARE STILL FILE SHARING SERVICES OUT THERE, SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. OR WHAT THE LEGALITIES ARE.

(PARDON THE CAP LETTERS, BUT IT'S EASIER FOR ME TO READ CAP LETTERS, INSTEAD OF SMALLCASE.)

AS FAR AS A PUSH TO SHUT DOWN TUBE SITES, THERE'S ALWAYS A PUSH BY CONSERVATIVES TO LIMIT PORN OR MAKE IT ILLEGAL.
MAYBE UNDER TRUMP, THEY MIGHT HAVE MORE SUCCESS. OR NOT.
BECAUSE IN REAL LIFE, HE SEEMS TO BE THE KIND OF GUY WHO APPRECIATES PORN. ON THE OTHER HAND, MANY POLITICIANS WHO PUSHED FOR HARSHER LAWS AGAINST HOMOSEXUALS WERE LATER OUTED AS HOMOSEXUALS (WHEN IT WAS ILLEGAL TO BE A HOMOSEXUAL, WHEN HOMOSEXUALS WERE CONSIDERED PERVERTED.
