Confusing comic superhero films. This is getting really confusing. Today, I read that Zachary Levi will star in the film "Shazam!" as the superhero Captain Marvel. But there are earlier reports that Brie Larson (an actress, who is a woman) will star in a movie currently titled "Captain Marvel" as the superhero Captain Marvel. Both films will open in 2019. So Captain Marvel is a man. Captain Marvel is also a woman. When I was a child, I read comic books about Captain Marvel, who was a boy who turns into a man when he utters the secret word: Shazam. I haven't read comics for many years now. But I assume that there is now a female Captain Marvel. But 2 different movies, about Captain Marvel? One a man Captain Marvel. One a woman Captain Marvel. Why should I be confused? I should have realized a long time ago that comics (and movies) don't need to have a continuous history. That plots can be contradictory. Illogical. And if you are foolish enough to point out the inconsistency of a movie, people will often say it's just a movie, so it doesn't need to be consistent.

I was just on Facebook and said this same thing in reference to something completely different: There's a transgender joke in there somewhere - I just can't find it. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Captain Marvel was created in the 1940s by Fawcett Comics and was about 12 year old Billy Batson who could change into the adult superhero Captain Marvel by uttering the word Shazam. Shazam was the name of the wizard who gave Billy the ability and derived it from these mythological characters: Solomon Hercules Atlas Zeus Achilles Mercury The Big Red Cheese (as he is affectionately known) was popular until DC sued for copyright infringement. The comic ceased publication in the early 1950s and was eventually bought out by DC. The character Captain Marvel's name was no longer copyright protected as it was allowed to lapse. Marvel Comics seized on this and created a namesake character. The character was brought back a few times and has a legion of fans out there. The movie has been long in the development stage as we have known about it for over ten years. http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/William_Batson_(New_Earth)/Gallery There are other characters such as Captain Marvel Jr (Freddy Freeman) Mary Marvel and the Lt Marvels. There was a movie serial produced in the 1940s as well as a rather poor Saturday morning series on television. The best thing about that was the introduction of Isis to the mythos. This one is tricky on multiple levels because movies based on comic books are likely to be filled with varying view points for the simple reason that the comic book characters keep going through various reincarnation when a new artist writes and draws the character. That get's compounded the longer the character has existed. It's gets murkier in the case of Captain Marvel because there have been 7 different Captain Marvel over the years and they have been both men and women. I assume the upcoming Captain Marvel movie will use the latest incarnation of CM because Brie Larson is playing Carol Danvers. I'm not sure how much of the source material they will use to make the movie or if they will mix a bunch of things. Now in the regards to what Zachary said. He made a comment stating that the character of Shazam (his upcoming movie) was the first Captain Marvel. It's really semantic because no one is going to call him Captain Marvel in his movie or refer to him as that because his name is Shazam. That said I'm really (like REALLY) tired of superhero movies to the point where I wait for them to come up on Netflix instead of going to the movie. The only exception is Guardians of the Galaxy but seeing as they are going to be in the new Avenger movie then I may also choose to pass on upcoming Guardian movies. Long live the Brown Coats.

I'm thinking of starting a new comic book about the character of General Marvel. He will be a young trans who transforms (get the inside joke) into General Marvel by uttering the secret word: PU (another inside joke). Do any of you PU members want to subscribe to my new comic book? (I'm not sure if I want to publish it through the Internet or not. Maybe I can make a deal with the PU site, and give them a % of sales.) What do PU members and PU staff think of my great idea? Comments and suggestions welcomed.
