David, while I understand the sentiment, "There is so much free material available that there is usually not a lot of reason to pay." Usually the 'free' part of it is because people willingly rip off the artist's work which isn't exactly given away but is thievery.
While this type of download cuts across all types of genre from main line movies to music to porn. It is very easy to justify these actions but really if you were to reverse the roll - it being your work - I doubt you would be so generous.
Cutting to the chase, if everyone were to download their desired content for free, then there would be no capital for these people to operate with. There is your reason to pay.
Understand, you don't have to sign an AT&T contract to get content, but rather sign up through the PU website usually getting a nice discount, stay the month & download to your heart's content. I have my favorite sites which cater to my niche and that's how a lot of us support the industry.
As an example (& I don't mean to beat a dead horse here), one can join Evil Angel for $15 for one month and download every thing you'd want that fills your niche. That $15 is what you alone would pay to go to a movie, eat popcorn & have a soda which you get to enjoy for about 90 - 120 mins.
And that sir is my perspective of free vs pay. Hope this gives you a reason to revisit your position.

Hey David - From me personally there is no attack on Graymane - he's a good PU friend who I like a lot. He also might be our only Octogenarian. Usually if the poll is suggested by someone they will be kudos by having their name mentioned unless the poll was generated by PU.
With regard to me and my responses on PU here is how I try to gauge my responses:
I am sarcastic - just my avenue of humor - but humor is key. I may take issues with the way a poll question is asked but only to point out certain ambiguities in the way or answers that might be offered. But there is no offense trying to made. My motto - "don't feed the trolls" so I try to make sure I'm not one.
I do certainly like PU - and it's members - and most of my time is spent in the forum and answering new poll questions so I do not try and alienate or insult fellow members since I have not found another collegial forum anywhere - not that I go looking for one.
Finally, if my response offense you, please accept my apology. I suppose that since this poll was the first time I had seen your name I might have thought you did not regularly attend this gathering and I'm sorry if I left a bad taste. Thanks for reaching out about your concerns.

Just to be fair all-around.
Looks like the female member with the most posts in the forum and reviews is Heather Mckxxx, kittygirl is second. Heather has 10 reviews and 69 forum posts. Kittygirl has 6 reviews and 0 forum posts. There are 120 male members ahead of Heather in reviews. There are 200 ahead of kittygirl. Heather is in the top 100 in forum posts.
Just based on this, this would put female participation at less than 1%. So I don't think Graymane is assuming. On the other hand...
While it's true that one can't tell by name, the member's gender does show in their profile. If someone chooses to lie about their gender it makes Graymane's question even more relevant since it would show there is a reason for the female members to claim "male" as their gender. No reason to question him for "assuming" since all he can do is go by the information the member provides in their profile.

David - Hey! Don't pick on our Graymane, friend to all and father figure to some.
The assumption is shared by more than just Graymane and the question centers around participation not member gender (Khan could tell us the latter number). Generally there are about 25 active participants who take part in discussions on a regular basis and had you been one of that number, you might have reached the same conclusion.

For one thing there are quite a few 18yrs old attending college at this very moment who have chosen a major that in 2yrs time will not be the same one they currently have. Although they might regret wasting those 2yrs. I'm going to go on a stretch and say that none of them will be embarassed or affraid that a decade later somebody finds out about it. I don't know if the same thing can be said of most women who did porn for a while when they had just turned 18.

Of course this is true and I agree. However, the truth to the matter is that maybe even 16 years old (in the USA) can even be seen as too young to drive because at this age a youth has a feeling of invincibility and are not entirely self aware enough to know that by just simply drinking a few and driving can result in dire results (not just getting a DUI) and will most likely do such regardless of what is heard/told to them. Why? because this also ties in to the fact that most youth also feel not only invincible but the fact that nothing will actually happen to them, until it usually does. However, this can be argued for 'adults' as well but I think a heightened sense of self awareness and maturity increases the feeling that these things can and will happen to ones self as you age. It's an interesting discussion but I just feel that any youth who wants to drink for whatever reason and wants to drive will pretty much be done anyways unless credible sources can truly get through to the youth before it happens. This is quite a hard thing to do but that is what life and maturity is, making decisions with certain results and learning from them.
