I prefer rar, but you can open and explore zips in windows by just double-clicking on them. And it's built in. It just makes it easier for most users to just use zips.

Cannot use the rar-downloads - no matter what I try, it states that this content is protected and demands a password - but neither login nor password for the site works...

The site looks interesting. Two questions-I didn't see a way to see the tour. Are those few pictures on the bottom of the page all you can show us? Is the trial full or limited access?
