careylowell (0) Not till I was 23. The family was car-less in my teen years.
How many others had to learn on a stick shift?

lk2fireone (0) I WAS 16. I THINK I GOT MY LEARNER'S PERMIT AT 15 1/2.
WITH A LEARNER'S PERMIT, YOU NEEDED A LICENSED DRIVER IN THE CAR WITH YOU FOR YOU TO DRIVE.

YES, IT WAS ALL STICK SHIFTS. I GUESS THEY WERE CHEAPER TO BUY. THE ONLY PEOPLE I KNEW WHO HAD AUTOMATICS WERE PEOPLE WITH MONEY.

NOW I DRIVE AN AUTOMATIC. IT'S EASIER TO DRIVE.

Drooler (Disabled) At 16 or 17 -- I can't quite remember. There was no way to get anywhere in good time without a car there, so I had to get one. Mine had an automatic transmission, but no power brakes, steering, or windows. No FM radio, either. It was a pretty basic car.

exotics4me (0) I got my driver's license when I was 14. It was a hardship license and only allowed me to drive to school and back. Converted to full at 16.

careylowell (0) REPLY TO #2 - lk2fireone :

PASSING YOUR DRIVER'S ROAD TEST IN AN AUTOMATIC MEANT YOUR LICENSE WOULD BE STAMPED IN RED "AUTOMATIC TRANS ONLY". IT WAS CRITICAL, VITAL!, FOR YOUNG MEN TO AVOID THAT SCARLETT LETTER. HERE IN NEW YORK STATE, IT CONTINUED TO APPEAR ON LICENSES UNTIL CIRCA 1980.

Homegirl (Disabled) Where I live, it is not practical to drive. No license, just take the subway or a bus.
