Cell phones are just a dog leash for humans. They've ruined face to face social interaction, created dangerous situations on the road and tossed out the respect for others in public with the stupid thing glued to everyones ear whether walking about or in a restaurant. Good for emergency situations but otherwise a nuisance as far as I am concerned.

INTERESTING POLL.
ON A PRACTICAL BASIS, MY CHOICE WOULD BE: OTHER.
PEOPLE GIVING UP THE INTERNET IMPLIES GIVING UP THE PU SITE.
I'M A LOYAL PU MEMBER.
I HATE MY CELL PHONE. CAN'T USE IT VERY WELL. BUT SINCE I GAVE UP MY LANDLINE (TO SAVE MONEY), MY CELL PHONE IS NECESSARY-TO MAKE DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENTS, CALL THE PHARMACY, AND A HOST OF OTHER NEEDS WHICH WOULD TAKE A LOT OF TIME AND ENERGY IF I DIDN'T HAVE A PHONE.
FOR TEENS, IT'S PROBABLY EASIER TO AMPUTATE ONE OF THEIR ARMS THAN TO MAKE THEM GIVE UP THEIR CELL PHONES: TEXTING, PLAYING GAMES, LISTENING TO MUSIC, ETC.
I SAW MY NEIGHBOR'S KID WHEN SHE WAS FIRST LEARNING TO DRIVE.
ONE HAND ON THE WHEEL.
ONE HAND HOLDING A CELL PHONE TO HER EAR.
I LEARNED TO DRIVE BEFORE CELL PHONES WERE INVENTED: BUT IT WAS TWO HANDS ON THE WHEEL. DRIVING WAS FUN, WONDERFUL, A SENSE OF FREEDOM, BUT IT WAS ALSO DANGEROUS, AND YOU WANTED BOTH HANDS ON THE WHEEL TO CONTROL THE CAR.

REPLY TO #1 - Yosemite :
A very good analogy but I think it's worse that that because at least a dog gets to be taken off the leash but most people are enslaved to their smartphone to the point where they can't go anywhere or do anything without having their phone right beside them. That's why I look at cellphone/smartphone addiction as technology enslavement but where the person self-enslaved him/herself to a piece of technology.

I picked cellphone but that's really a cheat on my part because I don't own a cellphone and I can do anything a cellphone can using other types of technologies. If the choice was between television and internet than it would be easy since you can view almost any TV show from the net but let's say that each platform is exclusive than I would have to give up the internet first because I have lived the bulk of my life without the net but I've been watching TV since I was a child.
That said the one thing that I would give up last is books and magazines because unlike any of the other choices. This one requires only that you have some light and your imagination to work.

Gotta be cell phone for no other reason than you can get a land line and answering service for home and mooch cell time from others when you're not at home.

I would choose to give up the Television. I don't watch it that much any way. While the wife is watching TV every night, I am on youtube, or some other internet based site.
I gave up the land line phone a few years ago, and as lk2fireone said in his response, there are just some practicalities for which a phone of some sort, in my case cell, are needed.
Books and Mags.... I thought long and hard about that one. I have not looked at any kind of magazine (outside of the dentist's waiting room) in years. But I am a confirmed bibliophile. I read many books, mostly historical stuff, but they are still books.
Internet - no ! Without the TV, the internet is how I get the news, weather, email, youtube entertainment. All via the net.

I need the cell for the odd "wherever" call, and books give a read that a tablet can't.
TV is basically a waste of time and money, with few exceptions. Could I live without my viewing being interrupted by ads for life insurance, dangerous pharmaceuticals, reverse mortgages, and the soon-to-come onslaught of retail shopping ads for the holiday season?
I believe I could.

While I'm a book reader, I have to be honest and say that I could live for 1 year without books better than I could without TV and movies - sad but true.
My cell phone is completely necessary for my work, so if I want to eat & pay rent, etc, I'm not going 1 year without that.
Internet - no, couldn't do it.

I sort of did a test drive on giving up TV. Last November my wife wanted to cut the cable and I put up no resistance. It'd be a rare week when I watched more than an hour and I could go weeks on end without it. I didn't think she'd last as long as she did, but a few weeks ago she signed up again. But it's been three weeks now (maybe four) and I still haven't had it on.
(In the interests of full disclosure, I am PVR-ing the new Ken Burns series on PBS called "The Vietnam War." I've liked some of Burns' stuff in the past so I can see myself binge-watching this some cold January weekend.)

Television really sucks these days and I just don't have time for it except for watching the news in the morning. Even the DIY shows are getting crappy. I would have turned it off long ago if my wife wasn't addicted to a bunch of shows.
