When I take the tour for a site, I look for some of my favorite models (Sophie Moone, Eve Angel, Eufrat, Nelly...); if they don't have any sets of these models, the site must look really, really good for me to join. Apart from that, I look for videos more than photos.

Photo sample size and quality is #1 for me, followed by the close second in viewable updates (at least a list with a thumbnail for each). And not just some small list of "most recent," either. I want to know about ALL of the updates from Day 1. It's value for the money!
The photo dimensions are ESSENTIAL. They have to be STATED. Terms like "high quality" or "hi-rez" or "large" mean NOTHING as far as I'm concerned, as they might only be 1024x768 in size! Once in 2006, I joined rookiebabe (at a cheap trial price), and their "large" photos were only 900px!
A third factor is zip files. Why some sites don't have them is a mystery.

I cannot point out one specific post in this poll - I look at all of these matters when I browse a preview of a new site. All are importend - but, ok - should I pick not one, but two it's probably:
1)Video quality
2)Updates

4 factors are probably what determine for me whether I'm interested
1) How hot the models look
2) The amount the site updates - cause a dead site is a dead site, regardless of whether or not they have hot models - or did when they were a live site
3) Photo sample size and quality - I'm more a pics guy than a vids guy. So the site should excite me with their sample pics
4) Price - how much does it cost? I'm really not that interested in paying more than $20/month US, though I'm willing to join an exciting site for a multi-month period to get to that price.
Give me all 4 above, hot models on a site that updates regularly (at least several times a week, though I prefer daily) with great pics at a good price - I'll happily join.

It's definitely a mix of the reasons stated, but there also has to be a certain quality to the tour that makes you feel like they've put some effort into it. I've joined sites with great tours and lousy member pages as well terrible tours with decent enough content, so I don't think it can be reduced to a simple formula. Some are too long or too short, some are too stocked with bells and whistles while others give you just the basics. So, it's always a "just right" formula that I'm looking for taht can't easily be quantified.

By the way, we had a poll on what users consider to be "hi-rez" pic size. 44 responses, 86% of which said 1600px or higher.

I love sites that show the updates and the dates they were updated, and a little synopsis by each scene. Sort of like bangbros, reality kings, or ftv girls, etc... I like to see what they got, and if any of the scenes appeal to me, and would be something worth downloading. But pretty much all of the above is very important to me, I cant really choose.

As other people have pointed out, almost everything in the list is important (design "coolness" being only item getting the cold shoulder).
Reminds of King Crimson's "Indiscipline": "No matter how I take it apart, no matter how I break it down, it remains consistent."
The point? I think this poll might be useful to a site that has one or more of the items lacking. Great pic sizes but I-really-don't-think-so models, for instance. NudeIdea would be an example of that.

Looks matter, a little (SexyBabes.TV is an example of a site that looks a LOT better after it's re-design), but my very favorite site, ALS Scan, has been criticized by many review sites for having an old-looking design and I can't think of when I gave it a moment's notice when I've been on the site. The links work, the material is fantastic, for my tastes, so once I get there I'm delving into the material and paying absolutely NO attention to the design of the site itself.
To their credit, they've put a LOT of work into upgrading the site, but it has ALL been about providing better quality pics and vids and upgrading their servers so that they could make vids available permanently, and now they're working on a project to put their vids and pics of a model together to improve navigation and they haven't spent their time making their overall site more attractive to those that find it old or ugly.
I wouldn't have them spend their time any differently than they have, personally.
On the other hand, MiaDiamond.com has had redesigns to the site at the same time that they continued to only pretend that they were a live site, harvesting their oldest material to re-post as "new" updates. That just sucks! I don't care how attractive the design of the site is, it sucks!

I've been ripped off far too many times by sites promising everything, then having only a handful of crap vids inside.
FTV was the first site that I ever went to that provided trailers so good it was enough to get off on. It was also the first site (out of about 20-30 that I had joined previously) where I joined and left satisfied. (I'll be joining again too.)
No matter what the ratings on review sites, no matter what they promise in the tour (100+ Gigs of video, my a$$), no matter how good the front page looks, NEVER trust a pornsite that doesn't show you a variety of trailers and perhaps an extensive model gallery.
My rule of thumb: if they don't show you what they have, they don't have it. (Front pages and tours are full of BS).

All of these I consider. I like to sample pics to get an idea of that they offer. But the most important thing is the sense of erotic 'feel'. If there are 'in your face' pics or girl's open spadges, I turn off. The biggest lure for me is attractive looking faces - and the same with eh navigation.
But in the tour, sites need to give you accurate info about what you will get. No tour, no sign up.
