Very important in two ways - in solo instances the model looks more attractive when looking directly at the camera (this is standard human response that studies have oft confirmed, though sample sizes sometimes leave a bit to be desired), and in scenes with two (or more) models performing together, I prefer to see the models making eye contact with each other. If it is a hardcore scene, they should not be looking at the camera - it is no fun when they break the "fourth wall".

Toadsith pretty much said it about the softcore and the hardcore, though there are a few videos I've seen in which the girl looking directly into the camera and speaking are a real turn on. (Have one of Layla Rivera getting it belly down flat and she starts in with this talk into the camera that really gets to me.) It depends on the model, the mood, and probably the position.
I've pared down photosets I've downloaded with the model looking away, and looking away some more, and ... Gee, I might have 25% of the damn thing left. It's a fantasy about being with the girl. It's not a fantasy about being ignored. Duhhhh.

Forgot to mention one thing and that is: sunglasses suck!
I hate to see models wearing sunglasses because you can't see their eyes. Normal glasses are 100% and can IMHO add a lot of attraction to a girl especially to one that has reached an age where we'd speak about the MILF thing.

I think the topic of sunglasses was discussed before, and recently.
But no matter. I'm still seeing sets with the girl's eyes covered in sunglasses -- beginning to end sometimes -- and I agree with Mr. Smut that they ssssssssuck!

There are adult models and porn performers, such as Katie Fey, Jenna Haze & Nautica Thorn, that are brilliant in terms of the use of eye contact, many others less so. If a woman has a fabulous body and uses it expressively, I can enjoy photos even if she doesn't use eye contact well. But when a model has an expression like she wants to be else-where, the photographer is a moron to just keep on shooting and think they are going to come out with something erotic. That was my complaint about Nubiles for a while, though they got lots better about that.
I know that Alex of ALS Scan has talked about the sunglasses issue and the quandary about shooting outdoors - some women are very sensitive to the sun and the choice is between getting an engaged set with them wearing sunglasses and a set where most of the material is worthless because the model is pre-occupied with her discomfort from the sun in her eyes, squinting, looking pained, etc. I've seen some pretty hot photosets of women in sunglasses, so it's not something that bothers me if it's a happy gorgeous woman in the sun wearing sunglasses.

To tell you the truth I never thought about eye contact in porn. Are we talking pics or videos? Obviously in pics it matters, and is a good thing... But in videos I rather no eye contact, as if the camera is not even there. I hate girls that act in front of the camera while they stare into it.
The only times in videos i like when they stare into the camera is in glamor shots like ddg, or a metart type.

I admit I'm vain and a little shallow. I like to see the model look at the camera as though I'm right there with her. My perfect video spends 70% of the time on the model's face with her frequent looks into the camera and doing something with her mouth. Assuming she has a pretty face!
