I didn't even realize that the repeal was reaching its 75th. I wonder if there will be any 1930's Chicago mobster shows on that night. I mean, it has been a few weeks now since the last time. ;)

This is about the ultimate test of the ability of a government to control human behavior.
The constitution of the United States was changed to outlaw alcoholic beverages and the US was supposed to turn "dry" with no evil drink or demon rum. Taverns and liquor stores were closed and most US drinkers began buying alcohol from gangsters who made it by the millions of gallons or illegally smuggled it into the US.
Most police and local governments were smart enough to look the other way or ignore the law, and the disrespect it created for law in the US continues to this day even years after the stupid idea was repealed.

Isn't really the holiday we should be celebrating this season. Screw to food; go straight for the good stuff ;)
Yes, Prohibition is once again proof that when the government tries to take away something most people think is good you're going to end up with nothing but problems ... until the government figures out that you can tax the hell out of it and make a lot of money from it.

Monahan? Who dat?
I live for posts on PU...but only while a new video is downloading or I'm cataloguing all my stash.
My plan is to have a double dry Beefeater martini, up, twist, shaken not stirred. Then yank out Little Richard, work him up to a Big Dick, watch a little vintage Christy Canyon (whose flappers, by the way, are as awesome as her hangers and should have been mentioned when we were discussing ISO standards for body parts.)

I don't drink too often, but why not lift one or two glasses in honor of freedom of choice? Sounds good to me.
Where do these PU members come up with these polls? I remember prohibition from history classes, but who pays attention to that today? Actually, I remember prohibition more from the Eliot Ness TV series back in the 1960s, and the movie about Eliot Ness with Kevin Costner in the 1980s.

Being a Canadian I must say that we owe a debt to the American Governemnt for prohibiting alcohol. Entire industries sprung up overnight and are still going to this day in no small part because of that. Let me simply add that if you're going to drink, then please don't drive, and try not to kill more brain cells that you can afford.

Yes, Elliot Ness (Robert Stack) was my hero! But he didn't keep me from drinking once I hit age 16 or so.

thanks for the info, but because I live in a dry county there's not much to really do unless you want to drive 20 minutes to the next county to get hard liquor. Really annoying

Dry counties, now that's a good idea....make someone drive 20 minutes to get alcohol and then expect no drunk drivers.
I'd be stocking up or is that illegal, too?
Just like the war on drugs in the USA which has done so much to stop illegal use of drugs. The great majority of patients seen in our hospital ICU somehow still have cocaine in their system. Must be from BEFORE the war on drugs, right?

No it's fine to stock up, you just can't buy hard liquor anywhere inside the county, unless you're ordering a drink at a bar/club/restaurant. And even then they extensively check the alcohol to food sale ratio, so we've had A LOT of places suddenly close because of it.
