As long as I come across people I haven't given a rating yet, why not? Spread the love.

I do every know and then, it does take time for new users to come up, but I only do it when they are users that have recently been productive and not just look at the member page and randomly give a rating to a user that hasn't done anything for over a year

NO. Never thought that trust ratings would earn you special points for the raffle deal.
On the contrary - the trust deals are something special that is supposed to be for the common good here.
Do not even believe that trust ratings should have any influence on those raffle tickets - at all.
1) If I read a good review from a new PU, I'll look out for the second and third - and then consider the trust.
2) We got some lousy/suspicious reviews now and then, but I'd NOT give them a NO TRUST the first time - give them a chance - if it's repeatedly, it could be different, but I guess Khan or others would eliminate them.

Denner said what I would have said but he beat me to it and said it better than I.
Posting a trust rating should be motivated by the quality of the contribution, not by the possible reward.

Just to clarify my previous post, no I don't think positive trust ratings should be given just because. It's just that being the newbie I am, it's very easy to find good reviewers I haven't given it yet.
The negative rating is more difficult one. I'm not sure if I'd give one unless I was very sure someone was intentionally spreading misinformation or involved in some sort of guerilla marketing.
Positive ratings were very encouraging in the beginning for me and if I notice someone writing five line reviews I'd rather suggest longer ones in replies than give a negative one.

I didn't know there was a reward! Maybe it was mentioned before but if it was it slipped my mind.

I've done the "5" a few times over the years, but I've never voted "yes" for anyone I didn't think deserved a trust vote.
I see the trust votes as part of the community building here, so we are encouraged to consider giving them as tokens of good will.
And yes, it's a bit cynical to have them tied to getting a raffle ticket, but it's only one ticket and it doesn't mean you'll win squat. That's been my experience. So the moral implications are pretty weak.

I didn't know, but it wouldn't matter to me. What does matter is that I always forget to give trust ratings to people that I know deserve it. I'll have to get off my fat ass and start doing some.

REPLY TO #8 - Khan :
Thanks, Khan. I had no doubt it was listed somewhere but the truth is I am having so much fun on your site that I very seldom think of the potential winnings even though I have been very grateful each time I won the raffle! :-)

Only to those who rightfully earned the rating. And I don't think many people here are handing them out the undeserved.
The problem is you will quickly run out of people to give a Trust vote to who actually deserve it. I know I've probably missed a few people who have earned a "YES", but if they are active I'll see their names pop up.

I give trust ratings regularly, mostly to new users but also to those more established. When I was new to the site I found that getting a few trust ratings really boosted motivation to post more well thought out reviews. I also give out negative if the reviews are suspect / too short / flawed in some way. Getting a raffle ticket for the effort is a plus.

BTW - the poll is good - at least it reminded me - once more - to take a look at some new/newer PUs reviews - and I voted - but please count out my votes here concerning raffles....(to be voting right now for scores would be hypocritical)....

If someone writes a decent review, I typically trust them right away, if it is an iffy review I will wait and see if they post anything else. I agree with BadMrFrosty that giving newbies trust ratings helps motivate them to post more reviews as it helps them feel appreciated and like they fit in, certainly nothing wrong with that.
