I'm relatively new here and only submitted 4 reviews thus far and got 10 trust ratings, for which I am grateful. Just because somebody never posted a review on this site before doesn't mean they can't be "trusted." Is this turning into a communist forum site?

If the user has submitted useful information, that is apparently trustworthy, what is the harm in trusting them? I think trust votes for new users can help get them to submit more reviews. No one wants to be a part of a standoffish community.
I gave you a trust vote Thedebilman666, as I though you provided useful information to fellow PUs, and hope you continue to.

I thank you for your trust rating vote. I didn't mean to sound so cocky in response to the poll question but try to understand that I'm Irish, I'm drinking whiskey and on top of that I'm a New Yorker so cockieness is in my nature. It's all about context man. The context of that question leaves me to think that new users don't have a clue to what they're talking about and people shouldn't jump the gun and trust them right off the bat. I'm a "newbie" to this site so how is a question like that supposed to sit with me? Of course I'm going to take offense...it's all about context man!

I tend to give them early, as an encouragement to new users for useful input given.

In every group of people there will always be puritans who think purity of belief is more important than freedom. Trust is far less of an issue than anything in a review forum. Sure, there may be those who schill for a web-site instead of writing honest reviews. A good reply that outlines the weakness of the web-site is far better than a "no-trust" check mark.
I don't think we're communists yet, comrade.

It all depends on the amount and quality of work they put in. If a new reviewer has made a handful of honest reviews, and is very active on message boards and comments, then they have earned more trust.

I had to pick undecided because I'm notoriously bad at giving trust ratings. I always forget to check that option and therefore I'm sure that I've overlooked giving some of you a positive trust rating. I've rarely given a negative one but I stand by those that received it. I think that giving a trust rating for only one review and no other parcipation anywhere else is somewhat excessive but it's not such a problem that we should start preventing that option. Ifa PU memeber feels that the reviewers deserves it then that's good enough for me.

No, that's not my experience.........and why should we.
It's a matter of help/encouragement, too.
When I've seen a new PU doing some fine reviews - including good pros and warnings/cons - well, then I figure that new PU is on the right track.
BTW: It's getting very close to X-mas, so to all the nice people here at PU and TBP:
A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS...

I've never quite understood the function of the "Trust" rating, except to say that I agree with previous posters who have said that it encourages new members to keep contributing. I pretty much trust everyone I encounter here on PU that they're not going to put a virus on my computer or some such thing, and that their reviews/posts will be of at least some value. So far, I haven't seen anyone who is obviously shilling for a particular website or egregiously bad-mouthing another. I think "Trust Rating" is a misnomer...it should actually be called a "Thumbs Up" or something like that.

The/our trust ratings are not a "misnomer" the way I see it. It's a a deal where you can keep away the kind of people who are in some ways related to certain sites - and give them up to a 100 in score...
Over the years we've had quite a few of those reviews from new PUs and just as fast as they entered - they leave again...
The PU trust is not just a hoax, but useful to the more serious users.

Sigh ... Once more into the breech ... :)
While the system has been modified a few times (see later announcements), you can see the initial announcement about Trust Ratings here
Basically, the trust system boils down to one single question ...
Can the reviewer's remarks be trusted to be accurate to what others will find if they visit a site?
It has nothing to do with (nor was it ever designed to be an indication of) a user's personal integrity.
If you want to understand the Trust system more, I can only encourage you to go back and read the *many* discussions on the subject in the Forum, in previous polls and in the Announcements section.

I don't think so. Those things gave me a kick to keep on writing reviews in the beginning. It feels good to be recognized by the community and to know that your work is not wasted.

I give trust ratings to reviews that show effort and serious intent. I also think new reviewers need encouragement.

Well, that's virtually a cut-n-paste copy of a previous reply you posted. Not sure what compelled you to post it again.
I'd point out that while your initial mistake (due to context) is perhaps understandable, however, now that it's been explained to you (and you've been given references to read more on the subject) then to continue to take offence is not so clearly understood. Unless of course, it has to do with the drinking, being Irish and being a New Yorker ... but you seem to consider those bigger issues than I do. ;-)

Prior to answering this poll and reading the thread, I assumed that trust ratings were earned when people used the review to go look at a site and found it to be what the reviewer said it would be. Now that was my logic speaking and one hopes that that is the reason I got trust votes.

I didn't think your initial response sounded cocky, although your use of the word communist in this context is a bit off.
The reason for the poll is that some folks here believe people are too quick to "trust" a new user - as trusting enough users in a week gets you a ticket in the drawing. I tend to give users trust votes if they provide useful seemingly trustworthy information, which is the basis for the trust, it has nothing to do with my personal opinion of that users overall trustworthiness, just that they seem to have provided trustworthy information on this site.
