Dirty old man = a man with experience and patience as well as a sex drive.
Women often use it as a semi-flattering joke, but they most often love the experienced attention that is often less threatening than attention from jealous and emotional and inexperienced younger men.
As I got older I found a lot more women giving me friendly attention in return for my approving and non-threatening flattery.

As it is a thing I have been working towards all my life, I take it as a compliment!

I look at it as a kind of joke. I`m a man, I`m in my 40`s and I like to watch dirty movies. I guess I qualify for a dirty old man...Just not that old.

It would depend on the context, I suppose, and on who's doing the name-calling. Can't say I've really been called that...yet. If someone good-naturedly called me a dirty old man because I like sex and porn, I'm sure I'd be fine with it. And even if it were said in a less-flattering context, I'd probably still not get too upset by it. Again, it depends upon the spirit in which it would be said.

I don't consider myself "old" (or "'ol") though definitely dirty, so it's only a minor putdown. But pretty much all older males are dirty ol' men so it's not much of a putdown.

... with my stock answer. "Gentlemen prefer blondes. Dirty old men like me aren't so particular".

At my age? Its a complaiment any way you cut it.
Although.....(indulge me if you will) So it is that Old-man 2010 has served his time and about to give-it-up to 2011, so has the expression "dirty-ole'-man" outlived its remarkable popularity in the colloqical world.
It needs replacing with a similary catching phrase; something fresh, with a promising future to replace our now waning predecessor.
Any suggestions?
Without a lot of thought, I'll throw out some quick examples: 1) Viagra poppa. (2) Horny 'ol fart.
3) Eh.....ummmm? lemme see.....well how'a'bout....Nah!
On second thought, I think "dirty 'ol man" is probably here to stay.

- I am going to Thailand on vacation!
- Wow! Dirty old man!
- No, you don't understand, I'm going with my wife.
- (sigh) Silly old man...

Definately a compliment. If having a desire and sex drive for a young woman makes me a dirty old man then i'm proud to be one...just ask my 26 year old filipino wife.

Never been called the old part, but my partner calls me a dirty man all the time. Perhaps when I get older she will include the old too...
