I usually watch videos with VLC, which seems to show anything I throw at it, so I'm not too worried about formats. MPG is probably the most open standard though, so given a choice, I guess I'd choose that.

I usually prefer the h.264 mpeg-4, which I guess could be included in mpg, but since that usually refers to an mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 I chose other. I find this question a bit odd. If it is referring to file extensions some of these can represent several different types of videos.

Putting my geek hat on for just a moment, those are all container formats which means that the same file type could actually be one of many of different types of video and audio. For example, a AVI file could contain video encoded using Divx, Xvid, h261, Intel Indeo and many more. The same is true for all of the formats mentioned.
Because of this you should be aware that a AVI downloaded from one site will not necessarily be the same as a AVI downloaded from another site in terms of compatibility or quality.
That said I prefer h264 video and AC3 audio for my videos :)

Same as Cap'n, not really into videos but on the occasions i wish to watch them would prefer to just have a simple wmv format that i can watch in windows media player, it annoys the hell out of me that one site forces me to download divx player just to view their videos then another site forces me to download Quicktime player (Petites Parisiennes last month) because they only provide the one download option. I guess it makes little difference now i've been forced to download all the various players.

Other. I think we have some containers and file formats here mixed with compression types. Generally I hate mov, dislike wmv and would prefer mp4/H.264.

AVI and only AVI as I watch my videos on TV, HD recorder or computer, so because of compatability AVI is my first choice.

tangub, re the .mov files from Petites Parisiennes - I think they are h264s, but the .mov container probably means that you need QT player as opposed to WM player on Windows.
However, if you download VLC, I find that it plays pretty much everything, including these, so you may want to try that. (The only exception is that this month's PP videos lose their sound in VLC, but the webmaster is rectifying this.)

I also use VLC and find that all videos play equally well. I usually use WMV simply because it also plays well on WMP.
One exception is f4v. HD videos from Naughty America are in f4v format which does not play on VLC. Solution is to just change the extension from f4v to wmv and you're good to go.

I picked wmv because that's the one I usually find on most sites. I really like the new h.264 format and that's one I will pick above wmv. The main reason is that the file size is often a little smaller than a wmv file of the same video.

h.264 (mp4) for me. I suppose that falls under mpg, so I'll vote that way. Please let me know if it doesn't.

As a Mac girl, I lean toward mpg files. The less I have to worry about getting a video to play, the better. :)

Not being a technical wizz, I always select WMV where available, just because it's what i know best and seems the simplest to me.

Since I'm part of the Mac cult I prefer MP4, or "Other" I guess, since the fairly common WMV format doesn't convert all at once (you can't skip through longer videos as soon as you open the file, it might take a few minutes).
This is why I prefer sites that offer multiple formats, from SD up to hi-res HD, since so many subscribers are PC users but that Apple users aren't left out. : - |

MP4's can look really good, but wmv files are still my basic standard. I just happen to like the way Windows Media Player works well enough when playing them.
But I do have VLC on hand for everything else. It starts with a crappy image at first sometimes, but it recovers quickly and is easy to use.
I tossed out my DivX Player. It was doing various weird things with downloads, and crashing my computer most times I downloaded an avi file! And once I "upgraded" (HA-HA-HA-HA) to the latest version, it REALLY fucked up my system good (imagine a PC on horse tranquilizer) and OUT IT WENT FOREVER, AMEN!

wmv were my go-to format for a long time but I find mpg or mp4 are usually smaller file sizes with similar video quality to a comparable wmv.

WMV are the best, but I put AVI because the files are compressed and therefore smaller.

Mkvs are the best file format out there. I'd prefer that and then mp4.
