The key is whether the site states that the membership stays active until the expiration date. If it does, I'm out about a week early.
If it's a good site but says nothing, I will stay with it until 48 hours before expiration.

Other, because I usually cancel within 2 days after subscribing. I can't rely on my memory any longer.

It varies a lot but the one constant is that if a site is really bad then I will cancel almost right away for fear that I might forget and then feel even dumber than I already do when I get a rebill.

If I plan on cancelling when I join I do it the day after joining.

I try and cancel immediately as most sites auto-renew every month and a month is usually enough for me even for the best sites - I'll then re-subscribe a few months later when they have new content.
Occasionally I put it off a while though and a few times I've missed the date and wound up being auto-renewed - slightly annoying but just one of those things.
I hate auto-renew but I can't do much about it since boycotting sites which use it would mean boycotting 99% of sites and I'm not willing to do that, so it's an pain in the ass I have to live with!
