I use two items - first, my browser (Firefox) has pop up blockers built in and second, a script blocker (NoScript) which also affects pop up and in frame ads.

I use Firefox's built-in blocker and it works reasonably well, minus the annoying "Please Take Our Survey!" shit a lot of otherwise legitimate sites dump on you.
Unfortunately I've found NoScript a time-consuming add-on, even if eventually effective. But my favorite add-on (though it doesn't affect pop-ups) is the free AdBlocker Plus for Firefox--no more ads in streaming videos!

I use the in-built Chrome one which seems to catch most other than a few Live Jasmin pop-ups which I normally close before the window has even loaded.

I think mine is the built-in Firefox one which blokes almost everything except damn Live Jasmine, which bizarrely pops up even on the odd gay site.
The only other thing that defeats it is TripAdvisor which loves pop ups!
If anyone knows of a pop-up blocker for Firefox which would kill TripAdvisor's damn pop-ups for good I'd be grateful as I use it a lot!

While I cannot verify the suggested fixes, a quick Google produced this response.
