Playback dimensions should be 720 horizontal pixels for HD and 1080 horizontal pixels for 1080P or "True HD." The only caveat is that you can't sample raw video shot at a lower resolution of 720 or 1980P and still call it HD.

I would say some combination of "all of the above". Dimensions alone don't define HD. Actually, I guess I don't even know what a standardized definition of HD is any more. Too lazy to Google though.

The only thing that counts for me is the quality of the picture. Technical numbers don't make up for fuzzy, non-crisp pictures so often mistakenly called hi-definition. Taking a blurry new picture of a fuzzy original does not seem like hi-def to me.

I'll look at the tech specs but, as Jay G points out, hi-def is what you see, which to me is clarity and depth almost to the point of being unreal sometimes. Unreal, probably, because I don't get hi-def as often as I get damn-good-enough-def.

I have to plead ignorance on this one. At a minimum, I download 1080x720 but in some cases that still looks like crap. I suspect that the dimensions are just one piece of the puzzle and that bitrate is a big part of it too.
Coincidentally, I think this an apt use of Justice Potter Stewart's comment about porn: I can't define it, but I know it when I see it.
