What makes a Addict Or a Collector?

Hey guys/gals I placed this question in a poll but would be a good topic. wondered what do you guys think separates the Collector from the addict.

If I may explain, I am recovering Alcoholic / Addict three plus years clean and sober so I know what and addiction is.
And am a Drug Counselor the last year or so.

However, when I think about porn hmmmm? wonder if I collect or not, or am I an addict?
In my spare time I do not just sit and surf for porn nor do I spend more then a small budget I set aside for checking out sites and to give reviews.
Since joining PU, I found it was a fun place to share my views and maybe even win a prize cool huh.
But I think I spend about 5-8 hours weekly in my porn stuff each week which includes now typing and reviewing.

In my spare time, I work on my classic truck, play online
games like battlefield2 and do allot of community stuff.

But I have been using , viewing collecting porn for years.
But wonder what those of you whom say you are collectors and those whom are addicts what is the difference if any?

I wouldn't want to give up porn, but unlike my alcohol addiction I can go long times without viewing porn. Its fun though and a nice rush. But I know I can not even have one drink or it will drag me into a night binging again.

Hey so this takes some honesty to take on this topic I guess, anyone game to give some insight to what your porn use means to you and why?

I would say that I am both. A little hard to admit but porn is a huge aspect of my life. My computer is downloading 24/7 at home and before I hard broadband here I was spending about 20 hours per week downloading in the evening off of the universities 100 MBit connection. There was times I was pulling in 25 GB per hour.

Collectors like to sort through everything and classify and rate worthiness of anything. In this case it just happens to be porn. I am a collector, although my collection is in need of a major sorting.

Addicts, like myself, can not go a day with downloading as much as possible. I also spend a little time nearly everyday watching it, although many times it is only 15 minutes or so. Other times it may be several hours.

Personally I am trying to go more from the addict side to the collector side of things. Now that I can download from home I can literally spend 15 minutes queuing downloads and leave it for a day, or longer if need be. I guess I am more addicted to collecting than to actual porn itself. Interesting fact about myself, I have thousands of DVDs and at least 10 TB on the computer, yet I have never been to a strip club? I am not sure why that is, maybe it is because I can not keep it?

Also, being a college student I am sure porn has affected my grades too. During the time I was downloading away from home all the time I was not doing so well with school. I am much better now that it can run in the background with no input from me for at times days at a time if need be.

Also worth mentioning. I also like to download as a challenge sometimes. Every site is a little different and there is different ways that each site can be downloaded. Many sites the point click method is best for, like VideoBox and this is simple and easy. HungarianHuneys is not that way. I spent some time yesterday figuring out a way to automate the searching and downloading of all the Zip files on that site.

Toadmix, you sound like a hobby collector. I figure I spend 8 hours a week on this site alone. But, I do not see this site as feeding into anyone's addiction. This is a nice place to talk to people and not have to worry about offending them if you mention that you liked the video of the pregnant midget blowing a she-male while talking it in the ass from a donkey (no, I have not actually seen such a video). Spending time here is like chatting on any other forum regardless of the topic.

I do not know if I could give up porn or not. If I did I would have a lot more money and time! Between the online DVD rentals, site subscriptions and hard drive space to put everything I have downloaded I have much more money than I care to know about invested. Also, if I did stop downloading today I easily have enough porn already to last the rest of my life with out seeing the same thing twice, assuming about 30 minutes a day of watching (I am 23 by the way). But it is not about that, it is all about the pursuit. Like the guy with the fastest drag car in town always trying to make it a little faster.

I am an easy addict though. This is exactly why I do not drink at all, I have never smoked, I have never been to a strip club, I do not gamble and have no intention of ever going to a casino, and I have never tried any drug. All of these things I know I would be likely to become addicted to, so I simply stay away. I figure at least with porn I get to keep what I spend my time and money on, and it does not change who I am when I am not spending time with it. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

I like to think of myself as a collector rather than an addict. I can go for days, weeks, and much longer without watching/downloading/collecting anything with pretty much no problem. I certainly don't like it when I have to but I can still deal with it and be unaffected.

If I thought I was an addict I don't think I could go very long without porn, whether I really needed to or not. Sometimes I just don't have the time, energy, or money to spend on porn, so it goes on the backburner and I get to it when I can. This is probably why I collect; I will get what I can, when I can, and then still know I have porn for whenever I have some free time. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I'm definately a collector. I don't watch most of the material that I Download. I have about 8 TB of data at this point from as early as 1996. It is really funny to see the terrible videos that were put out in the infancy of online porn.

I have found myself downloading an entire sites contents, pictures and videos only. I don't download the actual code :)

My biggest problem is finding ways to automate the downloading of certain sites. Right now I'm working my way through the BangBros Network and it is all manual download. It would be great if we could get a tutorial section on the site. Maybe a "best practices" of working with download managers on specific sites.

I used to like to collect specific starlets, but that is much tougher with Internet Only ladies and all the Euro babes... Kinky | Inky | Pinky | Stinky

I choose a third choice: Enthusiast

I have numerous hobbies, but the one that most closely coincides with my porn interest is movies. I have a modest movie collection (a couple hundred movies) but I've seen a massive amount of movies. Officially that number is at 1269 - based off the number of ratings I've made on Netflix, but I'm know there are some movies they don't have in their library and certainly there are some that I've somewhat forgotten.

I own certain movies I believe I will watch again with somewhat frequency or want to have on hand to show to another person at a moment's notice. I do not collect movies in the same way as one collects most other things. For example, I own Tim Burton's Batman - but not Batman Returns. Nor do I own every Audrey Hepburn movie - as much as I am a fan of hers. I am an enthusiast, I love movies and I spend a great deal of time and money watching them.

I have a selection of porn - a 500 GB drive dedicated to it. It isn't full yet, and it may be a while before it is. I certainly spend a good deal of money on porn, and I've viewed immense amounts of it - from pictures and videos to books and AIF. Not all of the porn I've seen is worth seeing twice (or even once) - so I don't archive it. I also trim out material in my archive that I haven't been watching. I all admit I have a tendency to archive smaller sites - but later I usually clean out the less-than-stellar material. Is the content highly organized? Yes - I wouldn't watch it at all if I couldn't find it quickly. Porn is to movies as McDonald's is to Brasserie Les Halles. Fast food isn't useful unless it is fast and at easy access - it is the same for porn in my opinion. Yet like movies and books, you always look for new, interesting and different porn. It isn't an addiction in the alcoholic sense nor in the obsessive collecting sense - it is just general enthusiasm for the genre. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!"

Truth: Full blown addict, sex addict to be more precise. I actually shouldn't be on here, and instead going to SAA meetings and working the steps, which I haven't done in over a year. Big surprise, life has gone down the drain, including serenity and peace. I'm also in AA and GA (Gambling) and have 5+ years clean with those addictions, but this one is the biggest bitch of all. The reason I'm on here today is actually to disable my account since I'm getting back on the recovery wagon so it's funny I saw this here. Good luck to anyone suffering with an actual addiction of this, it can be devastating.

I've nuked my entire collection many times - sometimes just because I needed the spare hard drive to build up a new rig. One time my porn drive became a music drive for my brother's wedding. I certainly enjoy porn, but it is hardly a problem if I delete it all. Frankly, I'd probably be more annoyed if I lost my normal movie collection - largely because I have more money invested in that. For me, it depends upon the site. DownThemAll! works rather nicely to grab stuff from a page, particularly if there are multiple zips or movies on one page.

Some sites don't have a zip file option for pictures, which is a huge nuisance. Assuming that their naming scheme isn't entirely random, I use curl, pointing to the first URL/filename combination and the last for the set, and it does the rest.

Wget is another one I use for downloading, mostly for movies and zipfiles. It's very robust and reliable. Where other download managers fail, this utility almost always works. You can toss filenames into a text file, and it will download them all.

I'd say I was addicted for quite a long time, a diehard pic collector mostly. I've always worked afternoon/evening shifts so the wee hours (midnight to four-ish) were open to sit and download eye candy, usually for several hours. Since my divorce, and the fact that I currently work only three days per week (14 hour work days), I have loads of free time and well... the ease and opportunity, and relative inexpensiveness compared to other hobbies, have made the whole thing a wee bit boring. Not that I don't have other interests. I write poetry and fiction, have published a few poems online and in print journals, and was in a band for ten years. I also had my own at-home recording studio (very basic, nothing big time) which kept me busy. As I get older I find that the desire to read and write is stronger than the desire to look at naked women. I guess this is a good thing over-all.

Recently I've been ordering books from Amazon and building my library, plus I've downloaded hundreds of texts from Project Gutenberg. I keep a few blogs going. I even participate at a secular/philosophy board. The time spent downloading and working on my collection of adult media has decreased significantly, but I still can't go very long without looking at the magical, mystical wonder of the female body.

About the addiction thing: I drank heavily from the age of seventeen to the age of thirty-two, then I was stone cold sober for the first eight years of my marriage. I was afraid that if I started drinking again I would go back into that old rut of getting hammered nearly every night, but ever since I did go back to drinking, about a year and a half ago, I can't seem to enjoy it like I used to. A few shots of Wild Turkey, or a few glasses of Grand Cosmopolitan, and I'm over at Youtube sniveling like an idiot to Peter Gabriel videos or trying to sing along to "Carry On Wayward Son" and probably annoying the neighbors, then it's off to bed with a serious case of the blues which can last for days.

Summing up, I'd say I was an addict for a while, but am now just a semi-detatched, aging collector. You know what I hate the most about selfish people? It's that they don't think enough about MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!

I have also erased my pretty small hardrive a couple of times, stayed away from porn for a couple of months when it got boring or if there was more exciting things in life to focus on.

I think that if you are member of more than 20-30 pay sites over a year or spend over 20 hours per week on porn you are most probably an addict...or at least you should ask yourself the question: Am an an addict?

Interesting comments around porn addiction from some of the 100-150 reviews/year pornusers in this thread:
