Slow download times for large files? I recently stared download really large VR files to support my new...uh..hobby. These files range from 1 to 10 GB. Ookla tells me I have a 75 mbps download speed. That means that, theoretically, with network padding overhead, I should be downloading a 2 GB file in less than 5 minutes. In reality, from some sites it sometimes takes HOURS. Smaller files, and the Ookla test, aren't a problem but the large ones....wow are they slow. Am I missing something? This might be because of all the prime-time streaming from Amazon and Netflix, or it might just be those...people...at Comcast throttling things. They, of course, recommend that I get a new cable modem. They tell me I am paying for 150 mbps download speeds but I have never seen it that fast. Anyone else encountering the same kind of issues? What is your Ookla rated download speed and what are your actual download times? Anybody out there with Comcast and really fast (120mbps+) Ookla times? Skippy

I DON'T HAVE COMCAST. I HAVE TIME WARNER CABLE (NOW CALLED SPECTRUM). MY TWC SUBSCRIPTION IS FOR 50 mbps (ABOUT 6.25 MB/SEC). MY OOLA RESULTS VARY AT DIFFERENT TIMES. CURRENTLY I AM GETTING 38.5 mbps. A SECOND OOLA TEST GIVES ME 42.5 mbps. NORMALLY I GET A LITTLE FASTER THAN THAT. I JUST DID A THIRD 00LA TEST. GOT 25.5 mbps. BUT AT ABOUT THE SAME TIME, I AM GETTING DOWNLOAD SPEEDS FROM METART FILES OF 4-5 MB/SEC. SO I DON'T THINK THAT OOLA IS THAT ACCURATE. IT'S PRECISE (GIVING VERY DETAILED SPEEDS), BUT I DON'T THINK THE SPEEDS ARE ACCURATE. NOT WHEN I CONSISTENTLY AVERAGE 4-5 MB/SEC FROM METART AND OTHER PAYSITES FOR DOWNLOAD SPEEDS. WHEN I DOWNLOAD FROM MOST PAYSITES, I USUALLY GET BETWEEN 4-5 MB/SEC. (MULTIPLY BY 8 TO GET THE EQUIVALENT mbps.) BUT SOME PAYSITES ARE WAY SLOWER AT TIMES (I ASSUME IT'S A SERVER PROBLEM AT THOSE SITES). A 150 mbps DOWNLOAD SPEED IS 3 TIMES MY MAXIMUM. A 75 mbps OOLA SPEED TEST IS OVER 50% FASTER THAN I HAVE EVER GOTTEN FROM MY TWC SUBSCRIPTION. I WOULD NOT BUY A NEW CABLE MODEM, WITHOUT TRYING TO CHECK WITH SOME KNOWLEDGEABLE COMPUTER GUY, BECAUSE IT COULD EASILY BE WASTED MONEY THAT WILL NOT GIVE YOU FASTER DOWNLOADS. BUT OVERALL, IT SEEMS YOU ARE BEING CHARGED FOR A SERVICE (FAST DOWNLOAD SPEEDS), AND NOT GETTING WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR. BUT TRYING TO GET HELPFUL SERVICE FROM A CABLE COMPANY (OR OTHER SERVICE PROVIDER) IS LIKE TRYING TO GET BLOOD FROM A TURNIP. Edited on Jan 21, 2017, 02:28am

Cable users are sharing the bandwith past the last node with other users. Therefor, you will almost never get the full theoretical bandwith. Also, never trust those "test your bandwith speed" sites. I have tried a couple of them and they gave me results between 4MBit and 160 MBit. A decent indicator for me is Steam. Downloading any file from there will get you a good idea of your actual bandwith. If you are using a download manager, which is highly recommended when dealing with huge files, check the settings. There is a good chance that you will find some tweaks to increase your performance, such as maximum parallel connections etc.. It's probably not entirely your connection, but the slow server of the site you're downloading from.

If you are paying for 150 Mbps and your speed test shows 75 Mbps, you might have a problem with your router. Either that or your ISP is not giving you what you are paying for. I encounter your issue with large files often. The bottleneck for those downloads is often on the server side. That is why I use Internet Download Manager for most large files. Unlike your browser, which opens up one connection to download one file, IDM can open up multiple connections. For example, you can set it to open 8 connections per file, and increase your download speed 8x. Better to be pissed on, than to be pissed off.

I could be in left field but I think that even if you have a very high speed internet connection. This doesn't mean that you can download files at the maximum capacity your ISP offers for no other reason than your download speed is really controlled by the site you are trying to download from. Now of course a high speed internet will go a long way in accelerating the download speed but I suspect that you may never be able to utilize the full download speeds your ISP offers. There is also the peak hours effect to consider. A site may get significantly less traffic at specific hours of the day and therefore your download speed will be significantly faster during those periods than when there more users online. THIS IS AN ARTICLE ON STREAMING SPEEDS FROM NETFLIX. https://www.wired.com/2014/06/netflix-streaming-test/ Pranav Dixit Gear Date of Publication: 06.10.14. (June 10, 2014) Crappy Netflix Playback? Here’s How to Test Your Streaming Speed Photo Illustration: WIRED Netflix goes out of its way to help you to figure out what’s wrong when you get crappy, pixelated video despite that super-fast connection you’re paying for. In addition to calling out ISPs when it thinks they’re the problem, Netflix also provides a handy speed index that lets you see which providers offer the best streaming experience. There’s even a way to test your Netflix performance in real time, thanks to a little-known 11-minute short on Netflix titled Example Short 23.976. Once launched, it will play back a series of unconnected clips—a gurgling fountain, a guy dressed in black moonwalking with a laptop, a time lapse of an evening sky, and a shot of the Netflix office in Los Gatos, among others. Ignore the action and focus your attention on the top left of the screen, which will display the bit rate (the number of bits per second that can be transmitted along a digital network) and the resolution of the video in real time. It should start out pretty low—my stream on the WIRED network, for instance, started out at a lowly 560 Kbps with a resolution of 512 x 384—but improve gradually as it buffers. Within a few seconds, my Netflix stream topped out at 3000 Kbps (3 Mbps) and a resolution of 1280 x 720. The higher these numbers, and the steadier they are, the better your Netflix performance is. The highest speed in the U.S. is 3.03 Mbps, according to Netflix’s ISP Speed Index, so I guess we aren’t doing too badly.

I'M NOT A COMPUTER EXPERT. BUT MY FIRST GUESS WOULD BE THAT THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THE SERVERS AT YOUR PORN PAYSITES. WHAT KIND OF DOWNLOAD SPEEDS ARE YOU GETTING AT METART.COM? I USUALLY GET ABOUT 4-5 MB/S (32-40 Mbps). THAT IS WITH A 6.25 MB/S CONNECTION FROM TIME WARNER CABLE. WHAT IS YOUR DOWNLOAD SPEED FROM METART? WITH YOUR FASTER RATED SPEED FROM COMCAST, YOU SHOULD BE GETTING A FASTER DOWNLOAD SPEED FROM METART THAN I GET. IF THAT IS TRUE, THEN THE PROBLEM IS WITH THE SERVERS AT YOUR PORN PAYSITES, I WOULD ASSUME. IF YOU ARE GETTING THE SAME OR SLOWER DOWNLOAD SPEEDS FROM METART THAN I GET, THEN THE PROBLEM IS WITH YOUR COMPUTER OR INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER.

I'm using Charter (also now called Spectrum). Ookla has me at 66.31 Mbps. I try to note my download speeds in reviews by using a percentage of the top speeds I've had and the lower ones. The top DL speed I have had was right at 9 MB/s, the slower sites are of course under 5 MB/s, but I find the majority I use are between 6.5 MB/s and 8 MB/s, that high number is rarely reached. I also only use porn sites for these percentages. I can download from Microsoft at 14 MB/s, it's pretty obvious that some of the problem is the site you're downloading from, how many people are using it and I believe the ISPs keep some kind of limit on our connections. I've received two warnings in the past, 2013-14, about downloading way over the average amount of content. Seems like I downloaded 900 GB one month and 1.2 TB the next. I really believe to get the most of a membership, if you're a hoarder especially, you have to use a download manager that runs while you're asleep. Oh and I have a Met Art account right now. It's giving me 7.2 - 7.8 MB/s. Last, I have always been told by webmasters that my distance from their servers plays a role in the speed I get. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk
