RIP Patrick McGoohan. It's rather strange that his two Emmy Awards came from Columbo rather than The Prisoner or Danger Man. But he was one of my favourite actors, totally underrated and underused, although a lot of that was due to his own, very selective way he chose roles (I thought he was great in Ice Station Zebra). If we don't ever see another post from Toadsith, we will at least all know the truth. | |

Patrick McGoohan, the actor/director/writer, died yesterday, Jan. 13, 2009. He could have been a much bigger name if he wanted. He turned down the roles of Gandalf in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" films. Also turned down the chance to play The Saint and James Bond. Haha, I would have suggested Patrick Macnee but I thought he'd been dead for years - but it appears he'll be 87 next month :-P And Natalie Wood, well she did have some appeal. Yessir, no doubt. Sadly she ended reminding us why one doesn't go swimming in November (even in Southern Cali). While drunk. And in a down-filled coat. And a wool sweater. Patrick McGoohan. Although it has been many years since I've seen him in anything. I was kind of hoping he would make a cameo in the remake of The Prisoner. Number 6 is finally free. Ricardo Montalban. The man who made the expression Corthian leather is own. Mr Roarke is finally reunited with Tattoo. May they make Fantasies come through. These people were part of my childhood. I can say that both will be missed. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

I didn't realize they were making a remake of the Prisoner, and with an American in the lead no less? Blast. That seems kind of wrong. I might have approved had they had cast someone like James Nesbitt in the lead. I recently watched "Jekyll", the 2007 BBC series and he was epically awesome in that. I hope they do a second season at some point - apparently it is already written. Anyway, I'll check out The Prisoner when it is released, but I worry they'll focus on the wrong themes in the original and lose what made it is so good. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" There's no way I'm even looking at The Prisoner movie, in the same way there's no way I wanted to see "The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" movie. Just another soulless way to make money. I don't mind movies making money, but for me, those sort of ideas (if you can call them that) suck. They'll be wheeling everyone out for interviews telling us all how it remains faithful to the original spirit, but with a modern slant and some surprises, that is more suitable for the 21st century. I saw that they are listing a movie for 2010 but I'm curious if that is really going to happen since they are pushing this 2009 TV Series through. I dunno, I'm not 100% opposed to remakes, there have been some good ones, it just seems that more often than not they fail to capture the style that made the original memorable. The latest Hitchhiker movie failed in part I think because they changed the story so damned much. I liked a good bit of the casting, in comparison to the original Radio Drama. Sam Rockwell captured the spirit of Zaphod quite well and Bill Nighy did an excellent job as Slartibartfast. I don't know why they picked Zooey Deschanel for Trillian, she was competent enough, but why wasn't she British? Hell, they could have had her do a British accent, enough British, Australian and New Zealand actors come over to the US for roles as American characters. I'd never run across Martin Freeman before, but he did a respectable Aurther Dent and Mos Def did Ford Prefect fine as well. They rather butchered the rendering of Marvin, even considering that I'm always happy to see Warwick Davis get work. Alan Rickman was perfect for his voice, but who thought Marvin was related to the iPod? How would that creation ever rust? Let alone complain about the diodes causing him pain. Stephen Fry was good as the Guide's voice and the Narrator. The problem was this movie should have simply been the Primary Phase and instead they made it this really bizarre combination of both the Primary Phase and the Secondary Phase - with new characters, different story lines and so on. At least they got the Whale and the bowl of Petunias right. Oh well, we just have look back to the good ol' days of the radio drama - the days when small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri were real small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri. I haven't gotten copies of the Tertiary Phase or the Quandary Phase yet - I know it is mostly the original cast, but you never know how well that works out. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" Looks like you've put on some weight and let yourself go a bit, Wittyguy. Marvin was my favourite character in the tv series, probably because he's the character most like me. Stepthen Moore was wonderful, but he had great lines to work with. It's the old thing about lightning not striking twice. There's a mysterious sort of magic that can only be captured once. | |

I'm worried that they will not understand all the nuances of the original, but then again most material translated from British TV to American TV has been a disapointment. I like the choice of actor because he never telegraphs is parts. If he's going to make a movies then it's not half ass for him. The actor slated for the part of number 6 is James Caviezel. Problems with your avatar? Did you make sure the file size was below the 15 KB limit? It also must be between 50x50 and 100x100 pixels - pretty small but enough to get the idea across I think. If it doesn't seem to be uploading right, try switching to a different browser and trying again. I've had it successfully upload in both Firefox and Google Chrome. Icefire was a science fiction novel written about using the Ross Ice Shelf to create a Soliton wave, which is much more powerful than tsunamis caused by water displacement. The size of France, the Ross Ice Shelf is broken off its Ice Cap with tactical nuclear weapons and then driven down into the ocean with a nuclear weapon high above it.
