Sites selling your private information? This is really weird. I received two emails today under my messmer throw-away gmail address which listed me, under my real name, as the sender of the mail. In the body of the email were links to 21Sextreme, a site I had subscribed to in the past. This might be an attempt by 21Sextreme to get me to re-subscribe but why list the real me as the author? What is really disturbing is that I get huge amounts of spam daily under my messmer gmail address (only used for porn,) with many of them addressing me by my real first name and even by my real whole name. There must be a lot of porn sites that are after a bit of extra income because only they and places like Epoch or CCBill would ever know about the real deal behind my "handle!" I guess all their protestations of guarding your privacy are just so much hot air.

Same experience here. I'm recently being spammed with real name email headers. Not sure where it started, but I, too, have been a 21sextury member a couple of weeks ago.

I've never been a member of 21sextury. As far as getting emails that show you are the sender (as well as being the recipient: I've posted on the forums (and maybe in response to some PU comments) that I sometimes get emails delivered to me that have me as the sender of the emails. I just delete those emails automatically, because I know I'm not that schizophrenic. And for the last year or so, I've been getting spam (mainly porn offers, but also offers for prescription drugs, etc.) that are addressed to my real first name, and sometimes to my first and last real names. So I agree that some porn sites might be selling private information. I've opened a couple of alternative email addresses, but my original email address is the one that gets the bulk of this spam. And it's hard for me to give it up, because that's where I get almost all my emails. There have been threads at PU where this problem of spam has been discussed before. But I just try to delete as much of it as I can, day by day. I believe that once you are put on a list that spammers use, you can either give up your email address (change completely to a new one), or just try to delete anything you think is spam. But the way: I almost never, in 15 years or more, open any kind of suspected spam message without checking it for a virus. And I just delete almost all spam messages anyway, without opening them.

I do exactly the same thing, lk2fireone, I get roughly 50 spam emails daily. GMail is kind enough to put them into a separate folder, which helps. I simply click on Spam, take a quick look at the senders and then batch delete the lot. Have you ever figured out how someone whose subject line reads something like "xyp:fsx%&" would ever expect to get an answer from anyone? And I am glad I don't belong to any social network because I am forever getting notified of someone wanting to be my friend or that there are 10 messages I have ignored. Must be hard on people who really are members!

Basically they will try anything to slip under your radar & con you into clicking on their links. Yes, I get similuated genuine titles to the spam emails too. I have never been anywhere near the site you suggested though. Cap'n. Ah, well, that site was just one of the suspects. I think there are a lot of them who make a bit of money on the side by selling your personal information.

I also started getting spammed with the 'real name' email header stuff after I started subscribing to online adult sites. My spam to legit ratio is probably 10 to 1 at this point. These days, I spend more time deleting emails than reading them. The problem is you cannot flag the mails as spam and have them dissapear in the future as each email has its own address and header. Obviously they are running spam bots that switch email headers and mask IP addresses etc. It could either be intentional or not on the part of the online sites selling email addresses or making them available. It is probably more likely, however, that their databases have been hacked somewhere along the line and email addresses taken. Either that or the sites themselves are infected and contain trojan bots that take our email addresses and use them in the chain. In other words, our emails would be used as platforms to send the stuff as well as receive it, using masking. I am pretty sure this is what this stuff is. I used my IP checker to trace some of these and each one has its own address and IP. Someone has a very slick masking routine running. The billers and web sites would be reluctant to admit their data was compromised like this, for obvious reasons. But the nature of the emails themselves indicate a trojan bot is doing all this behind the scenes. A site may not even know it is compromised or infected with such a bot. They probably wouldn't care either as long as the customers keep paying. Who wrote it and who is benefiting from it is anyones guess. Heck, maybe a competitor hacked someone elses database to direct traffic to them or piss customers off. But these are clearly auto-generated emails using a pretty sophisticated IP masking tool, not a direct mailing campaign by a specific site. But whatever you do, don't click any links in these emails if you are curious where they might take you. I did a right click on a few and the addresses were to places like WalMart and Best Buy etc...They are trying to make the links look legit. I would also make sure that your virus definitions are up-to-date. Edited on Jan 19, 2013, 07:37am

There is something basically wrong when it's a one way spam highway. Don't you have just wanted to empty your spam barrel right back into the Inbox of those guys with a big Fuck You as thanks? If it ain't grits, it must be a Yankee. If you're going to lay her head over the pool table and fuck her throat, get your fucking hand off her throat!

It's more than a bit time consuming but, when the spam gets to be more than you care to deal with, there is something you can do. Forward the emails to agencies that crack down on spammers. The time consuming part comes in because you have to forward them with full headers. That means opening the email, clicking on whatever your particular email uses to show full headers, copying the header and pasting it in the body of the email before sending it. I personally send them to spam@uce.gov, but there are other places you can send them to. Google can help you find them. After you've done this a few dozen times (maybe more?), sit back and watch your numbers. It won't happen overnight, but you should see a decrease in the amount of spam you get. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Social networking is something, IMHO, that you might do on the web, though before the web became popular, it was done much more often face-to-face. And it was, as I'm sure it still is, with a shared purpose in mind. The trouble is that the "social networking" sites offer not only social networking, but data mining opportunities for marketers and potential employers, to name just two. And that's why I also refrain from getting involved in social networking web sites. In the pre-web world, it would have been akin to shaking someone's hand, then finding out that I'm blacklisted and bombarded by direct mail at the same time. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Welcome to the club, bibo. And it is that sort of spam that is the most dangerous because the links look legitimate. But if they are, why use ME as the sender. So I simply delete without clicking on any of the links. Best be safe.

Not sure what they're trying to achieve with that sender. The thing is, that there seems to be a connection to the 21sextury network. Would be nice to hear a statement of the admins...

The messages that are sent using my full name or my email name are the first ones I forward to the government. It's a never ending battle, but I see those as the most likely to be passed on to still more spammers. Got to try to nip that shit in the bud ASAP! I'm pretty sure a site accidentally leaked or gave away my email years back with very similar experiences as the thread starter. The email I used then was not in any other use, totally dead and never used elsewhere either. I had only subscribed to those two networks and suddenly the huge amounts of spam started with real first name in the title. Of course I have no solid proof but that was all too convenient as the spam is all porn related too. During that time I only had used that email for subscribing to DDF and 21Sextury. Could be the biller too. I recently had a look and there's still spam flow of roughly two dozen messages a day Edited on Jan 21, 2013, 06:23am

I never click on provided links, I go to the site and then to where they say the link is. It is called phishing and could be used for far more harm then just signing up for porn. Could steal your identity. A good practice is do not be lazy and click links sent to you unless you are 100% sure it is legit. Since 2007
