Blast from the past...How it was for many of us before the interweb Hello, I am new to this site but not new to porn. I remember the old days of having to get the nerve up to buy a porn rag from the nice man who ran the kiosk at the train station. I am lucky enough so that the VCR was around and I could buy a VHS tape at a ridiculously high price. I am sure there are members here who had to deal with the super-8 reels. I can't imagine how cumbersome those were to eh 'enjoy'. Today's youth have it so much easier as they can get everything on the internet. Even their parents know as I have heard many say 'Oh, he's in his bedroom watching porn." If my parents caught any of us with our stash of porn, we would of had our asses beat until they fell off. (Yes, I was threatened with that one many times.) Oh, we kept our stash in the woods. I was old enough to buy porn at the start of the 1980s. It was not that cool to be gay unless you lived in some pockets in the city. Now most people don't care what you do as long as you leave a little tip. I started this thread to get some stories from the more mature set out there. This is before the internet and maybe even before the VCR became available. What are your stories? Gay or straight, fetish or whatever. How did you get what you were looking for? Many younger folks need to learn this stuff was not always out there and there were many risks. I precede the advent of internet porn by about two decades so my humble introduction to porn was through the VCR and the rental of movies. Buying porn in those days was simply not possible as the cost was simply too high for almost everyone. The selection was also quite meager but in many ways that is more a blessing than anything else because you then had something to look forward. There is something to be said for anticipation. How many people today truly crave the arrival of a new movie? I know many will say that they do but waiting a week for a new movie/scene isn't the same as waiting a couple of months and than waiting a couple of weeks because the video store's copy is out. Maybe it's because that's the porn I first saw but I find that a lot of what was made in the 70's and 80's is far superior to what was made afterwards. I'm not talking video quality wise but acting, and storyline wise. Long live the Brown Coats. | |

The cost of a VHS porn tape (gay) was $79.95 or higher at many adult bookstores. I also agree about the anticipation as I learned when they would get a delivery of new magazines and movies. They also filmed the movies for theaters that charged anywhere from $10 to $15 back then. The price for an evening movie at the regular theater was $4 to compare. I did watch many straight porn movies because of their plots. Some of them were better than what Hollywood had to offer in their regular films. The downside of the VCR introduction was the end of film and the beginning of many startups who would put a pretty picture on the cover only to have a disappointing taped project. I very much miss the old days ... of the 90s  My 18th birthday fell right around the time the internet, as a widespread, widely-used tool, was just getting going. I even remember one of my college professors laughing about his "email" account because it was at "hotmail". He joked that we shouldn't expect a fast reply from him because he didn't even own a computer at home. I did at least get to experience the older ways of porn using. I had access to old VHS porn tapes belonging to my uncle before I turned 18. Which led me to a false sense of comfortable security when it came to buying porn. First time I went to rent a porn VHS, I completely backed out and refused to go in the "adult" back room. Thing was, that rush, even though I didn't even rent anything or go in the adult room, really was as great as anything I've gotten out of porn. I eventually went back to the video store when a guy was working that I knew well and had no problem renting a couple of VHS porn tapes ... but that exciting rush and thrill was gone too. I then developed a real general interest in Hustler magazine. Sure I liked all the naked pages in it, but also loved the jokes, stories and looking at all the porn ads in the back pages of each issue. What I found was the rush and excitement only happened if I was buying the magazine from a store I wasn't familiar with. Especially if the store had a cute girl working behind the counter. There was something so wrong about asking for a Hustler. I think Hustler also helped that excitement since it was considered the "hardest" of mainstream adult magazines. I should say I'm generally a very soft-spoken, laid-back person, so I'm guessing most of those girls who waited on me weren't expecting me to ask them for a magazine full of naked women. I've had many things in life that led me to first majoring in Psychology and I consider my own curiosity towards this excitement and rush to be one of those. I honestly miss those days. My experience ages me cause it goes back to the mid 70s when I used to get the old left over out back from local liquor stores and not just read them at age 13 I sold them to my friends and neighborhood pals. Ah, yes! The back rooms of those old mom and pop video stores which offered porn back in the day. It is interesting to note many of the big chains went out of their way to have some stores charged with obscenity as they wanted to get rid of all the competition. And yes, there was a certain thrill about walking up to the bookstore back in the day before I made my first purchase, exotics4me. For me it was the possibility of getting caught by someone I knew. Ah yes, but in those days everything you did was not tracked either. Only your parents and a few close friends knew what you were busted doing. Now google has records on us all. I am not judging but really those are the people that should be honest and understand everyone sins since they believe its a sin. I know of no body that is perfect and sin or not we are all flesh and blood good and bad humans with desire and lusts. I find it also funny God in the bible totally 100% is against divorce and being unfaithful in marriage. Yet he says only that homosexuality is a sin and barely mentioned it modern society made it way way way more of and issue then God did, um just like stealing, lying, scamming others and million other things human do that are sins. I did run into a few people I knew while in the military. It lead to different results as I either had to pretend I was in the wrong section or I got lucky and brought someone home along with my porn stash. I totally agree with you about 70's and 80's porn, even 90's is far superior than what is made today. I find a lot of the porn made today is so fake and over the top and everyone is waxed and shiny and photo shopped. I am retro in my porn viewing, give me the big hair, full bush, mustaches, sideburns any day. I also find that a lot of porn these days doesn't have as much music as it did back in the day. Actually google and many others have been shown to give their data straight to the NSA. Verizon, Facebook.....the whole lot. Turns out that is only the tip of the iceberg for them. They also look at the undersea cables that transmit amount of data that make my collection look like barely a fart in the wind. NSA takes over 21 petabytes per day.
