1020p HD Video Playback

I joined the ZTOD site yesterday and downloaded a few of the 1020p videos, they are GREAT!

My problem is with the playback of the videos. I have tried serveral video playes including Media Player and VLC Player. It is very difficult to advance the video without lag involved. I have a very nice computer with a Dual Core 2.66 Ghz processor and 4 GB of RAM.

This problem occurs with any video encoded with mp4 codec. Does anyone have a better player or suggestion to make these videos easier to handle? Is it a player problem or settings? Kinky | Inky | Pinky | Stinky

You wouldn't happen to be playing them from an extrenal hard-drive, would you? Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I am running from 8 GB of RAM, and a 3.2 GHz dual core processor and I still see a small lag time. While I do not claim to be an expert here, I would suspect that your video card might be the lacking component.

If the lag is less than a second I would not worry much about it, but I have seen lag over 20 seconds which is extremely annoying. Khan is corrected as well. Playing form an USB drive would be okay, but trying to skip around would be much more taxing and USB simply is slower than SATA.

You could always download the videos in a lower format, say 720. Of course this is not ad fun and everyone wants the videos to look the best. 720 is just easier and still looks great. So I presume it is better, if you store on an external drive, to transfer the files to computer before playing? I took the advice of you and Khan and others to get an external drive. I have already backed up my files on to it and am very happy with it. I wish I had done this before. It's just I presume it is better to play directly from your computer than from the external drive.

If you just watch the movies at regular speed, you shouldn't see too much delay with playing them from the external drive. If you start to see some lag, or if you tend to fast-forward or skip ahead a lot, then you may see some improvement by tossing a copy to your regular drive just to play it.

I usually keep a temporary empty folder on my C: drive just for that purpose. I also keep one for downloads until they get moved to the external. Just the housekeeping that works for me. Most folks work out their own system. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Thanks. Sounds like good advice. Just wish I'd got the external drive sooner.

Badandy400 mentioned SATA being faster than USB, but FireWire is usually faster also, even though USB 2.0 is theoretically capable of higher speeds. At the very least, most devices have a USB port even if they are sold touting their faster connections. The only problem would be external hard drives with multiple connections tend to be pricier, as are the cables (though they usually come packaged with the drive), and USB is a more universal, if slower, interface. When do the first 3.0 USB drives come? They can handle 5Gb/s...

It is just one of those things that you have to figure out what works for you. I find it to be annoying thus I use SATA fro pretty much everything. All but two of my drives are connected through SATA even though they are mostly external.

One option you may want to consider is buy a SATA drive to keep internal that is just for your high bit rate videos. You can get 500 GB drives for about $60 now and there are great deals on larger drives too. This way you can but your 8 MBit videos on there using a faster interface and keep the lighter videos on the drive with a lighter interface. I know this costs money, but might be worth your effort.

Gee, imagine that, I recommended getting another hard drive...who would have thought :) "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

I do use an external drive system, it is eSata 3.0, so it is pretty fast. I'm going to try and save to an internal drive and see what happens.

The lag is not during playback, it is when I try to skip ahead, it takes 5 or 10 seconds to catch up.

BTW.. My system has...

Dual Core 2.66 Ghz Processor
Intel Executive Series Board
4 GB RAM
Dual 22" Widscreen Monitors
80Plus Power Supply
(3) Internal 1.0 TB Sata Drives
(8) 1.5 TB SATA Drives in an External NAS eSata Unit.

I completely understand what you are talking about BadAndy! More Storage!

Anyway... I don't want to drop hundreds of dollars on new video card, but.... if anyone has a recommendation of a card that can handle HD Video. I not a gamer, so no concerns there. Kinky | Inky | Pinky | Stinky

You might try Quicktime player, even though it pretty much sucks, I know it claims to handle MP4 pretty well Have a good one.

No one's mentioned system resources or operating system here.
If you have a lot of services and processes running in the background, even a fast machine with plenty of RAM can be taxed when trying to run high resolution video. This is especially true with a PC running Vista that hasn't been tweaked. I'd recommend a trip to blackviper.com where you can see what all can be eliminated in the way of resource hogs. Even if it doesn't solve your problem here, it certainly can't hurt to clean up your machine a bit. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

What is the bit rate for your NAS? I would recommend running a drive speed test to be sure that your system can read from the drives fast enough.
