DRM means that the video can expire at some point after which it legally becomes useless to you unless you stay a member to the site. Many sites that use DRM have the rights expire as your monthly membership expires. and if you stay a member you simply relicense the video.

There are several threads here that discuss this much farther. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

DRM means you can not download anything.
You can only watch a video by being connected to the website that offers it.
They lie and tell you this is downloading, but if you can't watch the video offline, it is not.

It gets me that there are sites which still do this. They seem to have little concept of how detrimental it is to their sales. They need to read remarks on this topic by others on PU.

This is not correct. DRM can allow downloading. The file is downloaded and the license can be too. DRM can be setup is many different ways, all up to the DRM provider.

I know of many sites that use DRM, just to keep files from being shared, but allow the users to view the files on their computer AFTER their subscription has expired.

DRM means the "owner" controls the content and you don't really buy anything, you just rent. Jay G

Technically, you *never* own the content you download. I understand what you're saying in that content you can download (w/out DRM) can be part of your collection and played on any machine.

However, it's always best to be clear that just because you download something, it doesn't mean it's yours to do with as you please. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

Perhaps a clearer version of hat Khan said is that when you download something the owner/site is giving you permission to access/view their content. If they do not use DRM they are not trying to deny your access later on. DRM give them the ability to control the access to their content, in other words you have access for a given time then it is removed.

Either way you still download the video and keep it on your computer. The DRM limits when and how you can access the video. I have DRM protected videos somewhere that I no longer have access to. These basically are dead weight. Now, usually, if I would resign up to this site I could regain access to these videos with actually needing to redownload them.

DRM is basically like renting a movie from the video store or Netflix style place. You must give up access at some point, but you can always rerent the movie. No one's said that DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. Check out this link:

Actually, this is a real legal gray area. Can I download something and sell it on Ebay? Probably not.I know I can sell used DVDs on ebay. Can I share it collector to collector in a non profit sense? Some courts have said yes, this goes back to recorded music issues. If what you say is strictly true, then these websites and porn companies are engaged in highway robbery for the prices they charge.

I wonder if badandy400 could ever legally donate some of his old hard drives to start a porn museum (maybe when they pry them from his cold dead hands :) )?

Intellectual property is always a gray area, as if the copies of art and entertainment we buy are strictly for our own private use, even though I am sure we have all shared movies, music, and maybe even porn (though apparently not downloads) with friends and family. If we overhear someone's sound system as it rattles their car apart, does that mean we have to pay the artist for overhearing it? What about music we hear at a party, or a film we see at a friend's house?

I think DRM is just a stupid way to piss off loyal paying customers, who make sites more money than they lose to piracy. The original DRM thread, started by a webmaster defending the practice, sparked a passionate debate, with many long and thorough responses, and why, if we understand it to sometimes be necessary, we still hate it too much to support it. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Rippper, Dr. Stranglove
