Net Neutrality Ended by FCC

The news came today: The Federal Communications Commission has, by a single vote on its 5-member committee, ended net neutrality.

They have, in effect, become the Supreme Court of consumer choice, ruling in favor of the interests of the telecom giants and over the protests of many others.

Your thoughts? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

AT&T is gobbling up Time Warner

Disney is swallowing Fox (except the network and news channel)

Welcome to the future as there will be one big corporation running everything.

Dwayne Johnson Strongly Considering Presidential Run in 2024

The multi-hyphenate superstar, who landed a star on the Walk of Fame this week and is gearing up for the release of his holiday blockbuster “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” has a jam-packed slate of projects lined up through the next presidential election. Yet Johnson says he would “100% consider” running for office.

“I couldn’t do both,” he admits when asked by Variety about his burgeoning career as a movie star, producer and the businessman behind his company, Seven Bucks Productions, which he co-owns with his longtime manager and ex-wife, Dany Garcia. “Realistically, as we go into 2018, when you look at my slate as we’re developing and shooting into 2019 and 2020, the slate goes deep into 2021, so it feels like the realistic consideration would be 2024.”

Onyx, you're right about the turnover of new technology and new companies rising to the top. But there is a serious problem with consolidating market share to fewer and fewer powerful companies over the past 15 or 20 years.

I agree that net neutrality advocates are a little hysterical about the issue, but when asked about "fast lanes" v "slow lanes" and censoring content, all four major ISPs declined to answer.

The convergence of these two factors is troubling. If it was easy for a new ISP to arise, then people could take their business elsewhere. But when only four major ISPs control the market, and competitors face high hurdles to enter the market, it is troubling. The problem is that "should" a problem arise with unfettered internet access, even if a solution is proposed and implemented, consumers and companies will suffer in the meantime. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

I guess it all comes down to whether or not you believe your ISP has the right to pick and choose winners in the economy. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

True, on a level playing field, this is ideal. But the internet won't be a level playing field without net neutrality.

I'm not worried about content getting to the consumer. I'm more worried about some businesses being extorted to be put in the fast lane by ISPs. Small new companies will find it hard to pay to compete with the internet giants. This stifles competition. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

Many FCC decisions were 3-2 votes. It's not inherently good or bad, and the FCC is a political agency, so at least they have a vote on issues. It's better than putting the power in either the hands of an individual or up to popular opinion. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."

I totally agree the FCC is the wrong place to make internet policy. It should be legislation passed by Congress.

Good luck in *that* happening. "A man talking sense to himself is no madder than a man talking nonsense not to himself."
