Winrar and .rar files

Wittyguy had mentioned that this could be a helpful thread, hopefully, I can make this clear.

Several sites that I know of are now using .rar files instead of .zip files.

Winrar is a shareware that replaces your zip application that comes with most computers. I needed it because of my job. I have an ever growing file of patient information, notes, and it was split into 60, 500 MB zip files, this can take as long as 2 hours to unzip all of it.

I found Winrar by searching, "Faster zip unzip". It works pretty much the same way zip files do, it is an archive maker and storage folder. I never really found out if zip files have a limit on size.

I do however have all 30 GB now in one rar folder instead of 60 zip folders. I can "extract" instead of unzip, the entire folder in about 10-20 minutes. It also has a nice password protection for every rar file, if you want and you can put say 50 rar files into one big rar file. Believe this saves space by compression.

Working with rar files

If you don't want to make the jump to Winrar and download a .rar set, you can right click the file once on your computer and rename it. Change the extension to .zip and it will change the format of the folder back to a zip folder so you can unzip it to work like any other zip folder would.

An example would be like this.

You download a file that is a rar file and named, eveangel469.rar, right click the file, click "rename" in the context menu and rename it to, eveangel469.zip

This will convert it back to a zip file from a rar file.

Safety

Mbaya and I'm sure others would worry about the safety of the program. I checked download (dot) com and they have it listed as being downloaded over 75,000,000 times from them alone. I've been using it for two years and have never had any problems with it or heard of any problems with it.

There is a catch though, it has a 40 day trial period, fully functional, after that you are supposed to pay for it, $30 one time fee. I did go ahead and buy one license for $20 (two years ago), but I also know that you can still use it in a limited capacity once the trial is over. The good news is, it still extracts/unzips after the trial is over.

I didn't mind the price since it is yours to keep, not a yearly price like most softwares are.

The good thing with the program is that it recognizes .zip files on your computer and converts them automatically to .rar files, and several other files types as well. It also has a feature that I really like. Say you have some old .zip/.rar files that you never unzipped/extracted. You can right click the file and open the file for a preview without having to unzip/extract the whole thing.

I will end by not posting their link, just do a google search for "lab rar" and it will come up if you want to check it out. If anything wasn't clear let me know. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

I think I may have sparked this conversation. Ive used rar files instead of zips for so long I forget why. Maybe its to do with coming from a coding background. I was under the impression that everyone else also understood and had worked with rar files too. It appears not though.

It would be an interesting poll to see how many users are familiar with rar files and happy to use them and how many are not.

The last thing we would want to do is alienate users for the sake of being too tech.

If it came to it then we could always batch repack our files to zips instead of rars. http://www.brooke-lee-playmates.com

I'm the type of guy who doesn't ever download full zips, I'll just download the images I like. Sometimes that could be 20-30, somtimes that could be 5-10. What I normally do is wait till hard drive gets close to full, then go in and zip everything.

I've used both Winzip and Winrar for work, for some reason I still prefer Winzip. I'm guessing it probably just because I'm more familiar with it. I guess what I don't get is that if Winrar compresses it better, why are videos not in a zip or rar file? I mean HD videos are way bigger then your average photo gallery, so why has no site ever zipped them for faster downloading?

You all are one of the first sites with .rar files that I've seen. I know there is one other, but I don't remember which one, I do remember though putting it in my review of a site awhile back.

I think it just becomes what you are comfortable with using. I had forgotten what zip files even looked like until my wife bought a new laptop without winrar on it.

I think the only thing that I've noticed in the comments about your site is that the rar files are password protected, that might scare customers off, not positive it would though, but with the whole issue of DRM and having to obtain DRM licenses on DRM files it might be dangerously close to sounding like that if a password is required to extract the photos. I haven't tried WinZip lately, for a long time, I thought the included zip software with a PC was WinZip, as I also thought WinRar was a MS software before downloading it. Does WinZip Pro unzip faster that you can tell? I'm always looking to get faster software that uses less resources too. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. This is helpful. I've only encountered .rar files on one site, but I didn't know that it was simply a matter of changing the file extension to .zip! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I think if its such a rare thing in this industry it would be best to stick with what people know for now.

I can run a batch this weekend to repack the files as Zips instead of Rars.

At the end of the day its more important that the users are happy with things and a personal choice does not put potential sign ups off. http://www.brooke-lee-playmates.com

There actually are some sites that do zip their videos. I know that at one time most of the Kink.com sites zipped their videos, not for sure if they do now or not though. Also Sandra Shine Live zips their videos, those are the ones off the top of my head, but I have noticed a few other sites in TBP reviews that talk about having zipped videos.

My joke was that unzipping/extracting the videos was the "foreplay" or "tease" for me ha ha! My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

I think what helped me figure out is that I used to take lots of pictures and would often change the extension from .bmp to .jpg so I could view them easier on my computer, that was back in the early 2000s. My first .rar file was a music .wav file a friend had sent. When I couldn't get it to work with my zip application, I, in a moment of anger, renamed the file and put .zip at the end. One of those oops it worked moments! My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. I looked down at my sloppy handful of junk and thought, This is going to make me rich. - Chuck Palahniuk

I rarely work with huge .zip files or .rar files so I can't help you much with a speed comparison, sorry. I haven't seen a noticeable lag unpacking either type of file. For me, it is convenient to have one program to handle both file types. Former PornUsers Senior Administrator

I downloaded the winrar program from the internet years ago because I had downloaded a rar file and couldn't unzip it. Then I kept the winrar program, and paid the shareware fee. Actually, though, the winwar program was still working even after the "trial" period expired, as far as I was concerned, from my usage of the program. I'm not that technically inclined.

When I paid for the winrar program, I got an email with a license key that was supposed to unlock the program, but the key was attached as a RAR attachment, and I couldn't open the stupid RAR attachment (I couldn't find it in the stupid email). That was almost 3 years ago, Sep 17, 2006. I'm not sure if I ever did open the RAR key to get the
license key or not, but I do use the winrar program occasionally to unzip files.

I still have the original email that contains my license key, so maybe I will play around with it to see if I can actually see the key, and maybe use it to unlock the winrar program. Or maybe I already have unlocked the winrar program. Like I said, I downloaded winrar about 3 years ago, but I don't know if it is unlocked or not. But the winrar unzips the files I need it for. So what the heck difference does it make, whether it's locked or unlocked?

Edit: I found the confirmation email with the license key, and found that I had gotten the key from it already. But I opened the key file and re-registered the copy, just in case. Edited on May 08, 2009, 10:23am

There's a free program called 7-Zip that handles zip and rar. So far I haven't discovered any bugs and I've been using it for almost two years.

Hey, Messmer, thanks for the 7-zip tip. I'd tried exotics way (renaming a .rar file extension to .zip), but it never worked. Found and downloaded 7-zip, which only takes a couple of mg of space, and it was easy to figure out and use right away. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

It does not matter what the file extension is, you could rename a RAR file myfile.beer, that does not magically turn you file into beer, its still a RAR file :-)

When you open the file in winrar/7zip/winzip whatever it will try to read the file header, which is a kind of description of what the file is and other basic information. If it can understand the header, it can extract it regardless of the extension. Newer versions of Winzip understand what a RAR file is and can deal with it which is why it worked.

And as for the question about why sites dont zip/rar video files, well its pointless. If you compress a video file, even at the highest compression settings you wont reduce the file size by very much. On a 500MB file, you would be lucky to save 1 or 2 megs by compressing it. The reason for this is that modern video formats are already highly compressed thus compressing them again has little effect.

The same goes for JPEG images, they are already highly compress so the space savings are minimal but the benefit here comes from downloading 1 zip file containing a set of 500 pics instead of individually downloading 500 pics 1 by 1.

Now if sites started to offer all of their video content in 1 zip file, that would make life easier :) The problem with the world is stupidity. Not saying there should be capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Thanks for the info. It's amazing how little I actually know about the technology that I spend so time working with.

And I guess I have only one more question at this point: Where can I get the native format mysuds.beer files? I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Microsoft's built-in zip file support in Windows does *not* open .rar files renamed to .zip

And winrar does not automatically convert zip files to rar files. This program is just able to open files using either compression/formatting technique.

Not really for sure what your point is, but I just removed winrar to test this. The winrar files automatically changed back to .zip files. When I reinstalled winrar, the .zip files automatically changed to .rar files. The file descriptions say winrar zip file. If I download a zip file it is saved as a rar file. I'm sure there is some technical technicality in there somewhere, but for me if it changes from needing zip to open to needing winrar to open without me doing anything, that is automatic. The renaming part has been recommended by webmasters on here and also has been used successfully by members here. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it. Just a guess here but ...

I suspect what you're seeing is what program is associated with that type of file. For example, when you installed winrar it associated all .rar and .zip files with itself.

To check this thoroughly, you'll need to make sure you're seeing the actual file extension with the file name. That would tell you if the file is actually being renamed (doubtful) or if it's just the association (which program is set to the default to open that type file) that changes. Understand Khan, I'm guessing the word usage is causing a problem. Not being a highly technical type, I am calling associations, converting, since I'm only looking for the result. When I reinstalled winrar there was a screen for associations and .zip was one of them. When I clicked it all of my zip folders with the zipper turned into the winrar stack of books icon. I think my whole point to justme was that I don't see the relevance of his post. My goal like most of the members who were asking about winrar was to open files, not to change file names. Though the renaming from .rar to .zip has worked for me and I believe it was Denner who first had the problem and it worked for him. Probably a good thing the sites have went away from rar downloads and back to zip. My first time I jacked off, I thought I'd invented it.
