I use my playstation 3 and it limits which codecs and formats I can play. I know some people just plug their lap tap directly in to their hd tv which I suppose is the same thing. However, this little device looks great. Anyone ever use something like this before? It even has a remote to use. Just thought some people here would be interested in this, I know I am considering it myself. I love watching my content on my LCD TV but I was always a bit mad about the limitations of codecs and stuff. Wonder how nice the picture looks with one of these. Sexted From My iPad | |

This does look pretty cool. I have sen several similar items. I have been putting a lot of consideration into putting my DVDs onto hard drives and building a small media center PC. This would be cheaper though! Yeah, that's the one. I think somebody mentioned this player in the forum a while back. I think I'm probably going to get one of these. The only thing is I want one that has the capability to hook into your network, wired or wireless, and play content from smb shares. | |

It claims to be able to except most USB devices. So there could be a possibility that it could accept a USB wireless network adapter. Would be worth for you to check into. I have a media player like that and it's great. But be careful, mine doesn't play wmv files and I have to convert almost all my movies before they can be watched on tv. Converting is quite time-consuming and there is some loss of quality. | |

This one says it does WMV files. My ps3 plays WMV and supposably DIVX and Xvid, but a lot of those AVI's I found the ps3 says 'unsupported data' when these are supposed to be DIVX and Xvid files. I think this item is great, I think there has to be others but this was pretty cool when I stumbled across it. If anyone get's this or has it, it would be great to hear their thoughts. I seen that media player in Best Buy today and checked it out. It has two USB ports, so I am thinking it may be possible to connect a WIFI adapter through one of them which would be nice. Also, it can NOT play any protected material. So itunes and such is a no go here. Well if you can use wifi and it plays wmv, xvid, divx, mpg and mov with a variet of codecs I'll get one today. I hope you can update it with the latest codecs somehow. I do have a 1 TB WD usb external that I could hook it up to, but I don't want to have to keep going back and forth between my computer hooking and unhooking it every time I want to watch pr0n. I swear that somebody here mentioned they had one of these. | |

I bought a Popcorn Hour a couple months ago cause it does a lot more and plays a few more types of files. But it costs a lot more too. | |

The A-110 is what I have. It plays pretty much everything the WD plays. I feel like the scaler is a tad bit better in the A-110. I've only come across one type of WMV that the PH doesn't like but it doesn't play on the WD either. The two features that got me to pony up for the PH was the fact that it can play WMA Pro audio and the network access. If you're a computer tinkerer, setting up NFS is awesome. No more copying to portable hard drives. I just browse everything on all the drives connected to my desktop computer from my couch. After a couple seconds of buffering, I'm off and playing. Even 1080p 8mb/s files play fine over 802.11G WiFi. I'm probably gonna end up going w/ a wired network since I do get very occasional stutters. I haven't installed a HD in it yet cause I've been reading about potential heat issues. I've just been happy with network access. One caveat about it, the PH remote royally sucks. The button layout is horrible. | |

The VOD is what I meant. Every unlimited rental plan lets your stream videos though your web browser. Some companies make set top boxes that you can use to watch on your TV. I'm looking for more functionality than just a netflix player. Also I'd be interested in one that plays Hulu and youtube too. I might as well just build a media center PC if I want all this functions. It really isn't that much to ask for though. The technology isn't anything crazy. I've been using my old modded original XBOX for sometime now to play media, but it can't handle the latest HD videos. Thanks for filling us in on the popcorn hour player. | |

I bought the WD Media Player a few months ago. It plays ok, but it is not easy to find files on it. Searches are very slow and take entirely too long. Well, about two weeks ago it stopped working. Obviously it is still in warranty, so I contacted Western Digital. They were polite enough, but they don't make returns practical and easy. First you need a return material authorization. You must get a box and ship it using a traceable carrier. No Post Office for them, you have to send it by UPS. You need to mark the box on three sides with the number they give you. Less than three markings, no credit. You must use bubble wrap or non movable cardboard, otherwise no credit. If the item is damaged in transit, no credit. Further you need to put the item in an electrostatic discharge bag, otherwise no credit. You get a new unit about 30 days after they receive the return. I don't live near a UPS store, don't have boxes or bubble wrap laying around and definitely don't have a special electrostatic discharge bag. For a hundred dollar item, this is just too much effort. I checked out the unit thoroughly and discovered that what was wrong was the AC adaptor. After going to several stores with no luck, I gave up and contacted Western Digital. They sold me one for $13 delivered by UPS. After four emails to customer service, I found that the fact that it was in warranty was irrelevant, as that is not a covered item. They don't make them so they don't warranty them. Next time I buy a Media Player I won't buy from Western Digital. | |

Ah that's a downright horrible story when it comes to returning items. Why does it have to be so damn difficult these days. As far as you remember, did it play almost all the types with no errors (such as Xvid, DivX, all kinds of WMVS, etc etc)? Plus, you can just plug in your external HD and browse the folder system within that HD using this right? My filing system is quite complex and easy to navigate so I don't think I'd be using the search function. However, the reason I want this, is because my playstation 3 has trouble with most WMVS and AVI files and it drives me nuts. I cam hook in my laptop to my LCD tv but I hate using the mouse from that distance, that's why I like the fact this has a remote. I have like 3 full sites that I have not looked at much content through my LCD TV cause the formats of the WMVS and AVI's wont play through my ps3 and it's pissing me off! :) Let me know any of your thoughts about this besides the fact that returning the stupid thing sucks :) Sexted From My iPad | |

It doesn't play all WMV files. I don't know which ones don't work until I try them and see. It also doesn't play DVIX, only XVID. I have had trouble with other formats that I cannot explain also. If you download videos from a site, all in the same format, it plays most but not all. HUH? They give you a program to change file types to AVI, but that doesn't work for some file types. Yet again, you don't know until you try them. There isn't a true search function. What I was getting at is that you must scroll a lot, and very slowly, in order to find anything. Don't put too much into an individual file folder unless you have patience. For example, if you have short clips from a website, you may have say 100 of them. It takes forever to move from one to the next within that folder. | |

mbaya, while files may be WMV and AVI, each file could be encoded differently. A great program to download to find this out is called "Mediainfo". I'll give you an example, A WMV from one site's info: Video ID : 1 Format : VC-1 Format profile : MP Codec ID : WMV3 Codec ID/Info : Windows Media Video 9 Codec ID/Hint : WMV3 Description of the codec : Windows Media Video 9 - 2-pass VBR Duration : 2mn 31s Bit rate : 1 496 Kbps Width : 718 pixels Height : 404 pixels Display aspect ratio : 16/9 Frame rate : 29.970 fps Resolution : 24 bits Scan type : Progressive Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.172 Stream size : 27.0 MiB (90%) A WMV from a different site: ideo ID : 2 Format : WMV1 Codec ID : WMV1 Codec ID/Info : Windows Media Video 7 Description of the codec : Windows Media Video V7 Duration : 5mn 58s Bit rate mode : Constant Bit rate : 1 368 Kbps Width : 640 pixels Height : 480 pixels Display aspect ratio : 4/3 Frame rate : 30.000 fps Resolution : 24 bits Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.148 Stream size : 58.4 MiB (92%) The first WMV file plays on my playstation 3 but the second one does not. Some sites encode older files a certain way or just change randomly which can screw me over every once in awhile. Often, DVD sites do this to me (at least the Japanese ones, Sex Asian 18 and so on). Some files work on my ps3 but some don't because they encoded certain files differently, while all AVI's, only certain codecs work with ps3. Thanks for the information. However, that just makes using the player even more difficult if I have to check out more information. Now I may know why a video doesn't work, but it doesn't make the video player more useful. It still is just as much a crap shoot if a given video may work. I have never used a playstation, but the video player has some of the same weaknesses. I checked out others on Amazon, but they all seem to have some kind of weakness. Maybe the answer is to wait until the technology improves. Given enough time, I am sure there will be players that work with many more file types and will be even cheaper. | |
