I know this issue has been discussed in the past a bit, but something brought this question forward for me today.

I’m in Toronto, the self-described cultural capital of English-speaking Canada. Considering that I’m from a Canadian province with a population smaller than some Toronto suburbs, this city’s 2.5 million people make it seem pretty large. I’m a regular here, but I’m still always very happy to get home. But that’s not a discussion for this site…

I popped in to one of the larger (and couples-friendly) adult boutiques (see, “boutiques” makes it sound so much nicer!) and on one floor they have a huge collection of DVDs for sale. All of the ones I looked at were priced at $39.99 CDN, or approximately $37 USD. All of the titles I looked at are widely available on the internet.

Unless someone has been living under a rock or is completely devoid of any technical ability, how could anyone justify paying that price for a DVD? Many of the DVDs I looked at are available on sites like Videobox, which makes them a great deal. I’d bet that any of them are available on a VOD site for far less than $40.

Any idea who is still buying DVDs? I ask this not knowing the answer. I’m not asking this as a rhetorical question. I honestly have no idea why a store would dedicate an entire floor to adult DVDs and sell them for $40. Someone has to be buying them.

Any thoughts?

BTW – not that this is a topic for this forum, but in terms of price, value, looks, safety – any measure you can think of, Toronto escorts have to be among the absolute best on the planet. Whether you agree or disagree, please send money. I guarantee you that it will be going to a good cause… ‘stimulating’ the economy. I’d go broke if I was here longer than a few days.

I suppose one reason for buying a DVD instead of joining an Internet site is to leave less of a trail. Depends on how paranoid you are, or if you could have serious problems if a hacker/whatever got a trail of your online porn activity.

I haven't bought or rented porn DVDs since I started joining paysites. I'm so used to watching porn on my computer, I even watch my old porn DVDs on my computer rather than on my TV, and my tapes not at all.

My guess is that some folks want to watch porn on their big screens and can't be bothered to futz around with computer-based options. And for couples, I imagine watching on TV would be the preferred option.

"Boutiques"--I love that! Maybe that's why they are so expensive, or it is more of an upscale boutique, sort of like comparing Macy's to Wal-Mart. But that is a lot of money for a DVD.

Lol. I bet you would! If only our government here in the U.S. would take your approach to economic 'recovery.' "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? I never thought of it that way, but I think a fellow would have to be pretty paranoid to choose DVDs over online porn. I can leave a portable drive with 500GB of porn on it sitting on my desk for days and my bride would never ask about it. A stack of 250-300 DVDs with titles like "Ass Master Blaster" might cause her to ask a question or two.

They certainly aim to be an upscale place, but honestly, how 'upscale' can you be when you sell replicas of Ashley Blue's ass? Nothing against Ms. Blue, of course, but we're not talking Saks Fifth Avenue here...

And it makes me feel pretty proud that I can stimulate the economy while being stimulated myself.

I haven't been a in Sex...Oops Adult Boutique in years but I still buy DVD's almost every month. I deal with about 2 to 3 different distributors. I shop around to see what they have to offer and who's got the best price vs stock.

I'm not sure why your boutique is charging 40$ for their dvd's because most can be bought for less than 20$ and the shipping cost me about 9$. There are some exceptions like movies from Jule Jordan and some Evil Angel titles. Those are usually 24$ to 30$.

Most of the movies that I buy can't be downloaded. You can stream some of them but that's not the same thing. Long live the Brown Coats.

I guess it could be upscale if there were a lot of helpful salespeople to assist you in selecting the 'right' product, though I am not sure I want to know what the sex shop/adult boutique equivalent is of the sales lady spraying perfume in your face when you walk by her counter. Here's my list of why porn vids are still around (The 5 "I" Monster ... as opposed to the One Eyed Monster):

1) Idiots: Either people don't know how or are too scarred they'll get ripped off if they try and download porn from the internet (obviously Pornusers needs to improve their marketing campaign). This category are also includes the people who haven't figured out their finances to the point of being able to get a debit/credit card that they can use online.

2) Impulse: Some people don't want to take the time to sift through websites and trying to figure out what they want. It's just easier and faster to walk in, browse for a few moments and go home and spank the night away.

3. Internet: Some people don't have internet access at home even though they may use it for work or else they have a slow crappy internet connection in which case downloading just isn't much of an option.

4. Image Size: I think a very small minority is obsessed with watching all the action on their "Average American Body Sized" (e.g. - 52" across) tv and they know even some HD porn sites can't deliver the kind of clarity that they want.

5. It's What You Know or Want: Some people just started watching porn on cd/dvd and have never shifted over to, or liked, downloading. Also, not everything on DVD is on the internet. For those who like their particular pornstars, if you want to see their newest stuff you gotta buy the box, not the online membership. Edited on Aug 13, 2010, 02:18pm

Actually, this could be considered 'upscale' by any measure. I noted the Ashley Blue Ass while a salesman went through the virtues of several products with a male/female couple in their late 20s. The guy seemed to be interested in an Ashley Blue ass, but the salesman, in a manner unknown to me, was suggesting a "hand-held" device for a quarter of the cost. I realize that women are the primary buyer for most things, but if it was me I'd go for the full Ashley Blue bum thing. But I'll always go for a full bum thing.

And if Ashley Blue has a problem with any of this, please email me and we'll work it out.

You're probably 100% right. I guess I just don't understand the 'why' of buying porn offline. You've given some likely reasons.

Man, ever since you wrote "see, 'boutiques' makes it sound so much nicer!" I've been laughing my way through this entire thread.

I can only imagine going sex toy/adult device shopping with a girlfriend; she convinces me to buy the smaller hand-held device over the full Ashley Blue fantasy puss-and-bum latex/silicone self-pleasure sculpture (I guess she's a frugal girl), and then I spend the rest of the time trying to talk her into buying the meanest, baddest, most aggressive looking butt plug they sell. Knowing my luck I would finally get her to buy it only as soon as we get home the first thing she says to me is "Well, you talked me into it, so you get to take the first turn. Bend over."

Be careful what you wish for when buying sex toys!

Actually a funny (and true) story about an adult boutique shop I was at in Germany is the shop offered free gift wrapping. Are you kidding me? I had to buy something just to watch the pretty cashier wrap it up for me. I of course ended up buying some unapologetically filthy looking pissing DVD--probably erasing all doubt as to whether or not I indeed did have a few screws loose--and happily watched her gift wrap it in a Christmas-themed paper (I think it was early December). She wrapped it quite well and was a very nice and friendly saleswoman so I definitely give the store credit for being so friendly to its customer base (even the base ones like me ). I'm not even sure I would be treated that respectfully in non-adult boutiques, let alone most adult ones. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? That's kind of strange reasoning if you ask me. I guess a person is much more likely to get caught by anyone who might matter (wife, kids, visiting people, people you know passing on the street) if one goes buy physical porn DVD's in person.

Of course in some societies porn's not accepted at all and one might be actually blackmailed. I can see ones life being ruined in some USA bible belt small town if people found out he frequents porns sites but then again, I guess the most conservative people have the most freaky hidden fetishes

I believe that those who are the most vocally opposed to things like porn, sexuality, or basically anything they deem 'sinful' and/or 'immoral' are usually the ones hiding the deepest darkest secrets (though by this logic it would mean I am secretly a devout Christian ). Seriously, how many ultra-moral self-appointed do-gooders have been revealed to actually be closeted gays, frauds, crooks, liars, charlatans, and just plain hypocrites? The list is endless, and instead of just taking a live-and-let-live philosophy people are afraid of their own personal feelings and beliefs and rally against them publicly.

The Internet is still the go-to place for most people's secret fantasies and hobbies, which makes sense because the 'net really isn't anything tangible in the physical sense like DVDs, magazines, and 'devices' are. I think most users are aware that something, somewhere is tracking what they do but they just don't care because of a largely false sense of anonymity.

I can only begin to imagine what I would say if I had to explain my Internet history over the years! Is it possible to plead nolo contendre to an accusing spouse or partner? I buy DVDs [though usually cheap used copies from ebay or an online dvd store not ones for almost $40.00] because I want to watch them on my TV. I would like to join a paysite and download videos and make my own DVDs that will play on my DVD player but I need to figure out the details first before I spend the $. There are websites that feature girls I can't find DVDs for [i.e. Masha from Masha's world] so I know I'm missing out.

Wittyguy, thanks for the list - I too, was wondering why folk are still buying DVDs.

I live in a relatively quaint English market town, and there was some disapproval a couple of years ago when we got our very own... er... 'boutique' is apparently the word I'm looking for

Recently, I was passing (on my own) and finally took a look inside. And I was shocked and appalled at what I saw.

£40 for DVDs! I'll stick with online...

The only good reason to buy or rent one is Blu-ray. I don't think a well made Blu-ray porn could be matched with any porn sites. At least not until we can download 50GB porn in 5 minutes as that's how much space it would take to put a high quality video in a Blu-ray disc.

Nah, I don't think the Admiral would have a problem with leaving a trail, or being blackmailed by a hacker. Not here in Canada since even Cable Providers carry at least a couple of porn channels that show hardcore DVD scenes around the clock.

Which speaks directly to the Admiral's question: why would anyone pay $ 40 CA when he can subscribe to an adult channel for $ 14.95 a month.

I don't have an answer either.

I still regularly buy DVD's and the main reason is that most are not availbale on any site except sites like Hot movies and AEBN. I don't think I've ever paid 40$ for a porn dvd. Most are usually 19.95$ to 21.95$. There are some studios like Jules Jordan and Evil Angel that can go higher but usually they are still below 30$. Long live the Brown Coats.

Think your question should be more "who actually goes to a B&M store these days to buy their porn?"

I've never, and quite frankly never will, pay $40 for a single smut flick. I like porn...but not that damn much. Furthermore, can always find deals online w/ different e-tailers and usually sell for $15-20 for a fairly recent release.

I buy DVDs, though usually either older/discounted DVD for $10 or less or a title I really really want after seeing it. Depending on the type of studio we're talking about, the DVD picture can be superior or subpar to what you can find on the internet. Usually a DVD will be about 4-7Mbps for SD vid. DVD sites you're lucky to get 3/4th the quality. Furthermore, you can bob deinterlace the video providing great image quality and smoother motion than what you'll find at the DVD sites.

If the video was orginally released for DVD video and not web to DVD, it's pretty much better on DVD. Whether that better is worth the quality over quantity DVD sites offer is up to you.

I think the point is that even today there are many people who do not know how to use the computer, so they buy the DVDs even today, Otherwise they would enjoy all that on the web.
