Scan scams So-called "free scans" -- offering to cleanse your computer's registry, as well as the other vermin such as spyware, worms, bugs, etc., -- isn't exactly porn, but falling for their inevitable pitch is tantamount to getting a kick in the balls ....so that's close enough. It pops up everywhere: "free scan, rid your computer from the malware that's gumming up your system...it's free." Free that is, UNTIL.....the scanning results show you have two trillion distructive villains playing havoc with your system's performance....after which you're blessed with their offer to upgrade the scan to actually sweep out all those ugly gremlins thereby rendering your system a new birth. Surprise, surprise....."free" flies out the window and the 'ol "bait-and-switch" takes a bow. The inevitable now greets you with: "For only $$$$ we can solve the problem by your downloading our super-duper every-thing cleaner." The sad thing is even many of those programs you trust who're supposed to pertect you from this kind of thing promotes it on their site. The con game via the Internet is alive an' well.

Some of those super-duper cleaner programs are actually malware, that don't just report false viruses, false trojans, false whatever, but actually load malware onto your PC that will degrade your performance. And it can be hard as heck to remove the installed malware after someone tells you the program you paid for is causing your problems.

I would highly recommend that you shutdown your computer the moment those free virus scans appear on screen. As ik2fireone said. They are malware but some are an even worse kind of malware. They actually infest your computer and can't be removed except by reformating your hard drive. I got one this year and I wound up buying a brand new computer. The software somehow hides in an unknown file and even after you've run every possible virus and malware remover and you've gotten a clean bill of health then a couple of days later the virus reapears. It's able to stay dorment so that you think you are safe. Whoever is responsible for those litle gifts needs to get his or her as kicked a few times around the block. Long live the Brown Coats.

Get to know the word: combofix Takes some experience, but I've not yet seen an infection that eludes combofix's log file.

Thanks, I'll remember that one for the next time. I don't know if it would have helped me because I took my computer to the specialist and frankly they ran every possible program they could find and after 3 times. I decided to wipe the hard drive because the stupid virus always came back. Long live the Brown Coats.

combofix gets rid of a lot of bad stuff automatically, then scans the harddrive looking for files that fall into the "possible" category. It'll come back with a log file listing perhaps 100 files, then the trick is spotting the 1 or 2 files out of the list that are causing the problems. Takes experience to learn what's normal and what's not, I've cleaned up so many computers just a quick glance at the log file I can spot the bad files. General rule is, type the filename into google, and if it cannot identify the file, then you do not want it on your computer. Make sure to keep java, flash, & adobe reader updated to the latest versions.

Yes, but these days I don't see that "Finally Fast" ad on TV anymore. I wonder what happened? Did they wind up infecting themselves and go under? I really miss that overgrown twerp whining, "Mom! This internet connection is SO SLOW!" Now it's "My Clean PC," but it's still a bunch of ignoramuses (as we're all supposed to be) buying into lines like "Does it take more than 3 seconds for your email to load?" (whatever that's exactly supposed to mean). I don't think anyone's email finishes loading that fast! But it goads me how these snake oil specialists get away with this shit on television. If you have a cable or dish subscription service (most of us, yes?), you're PAYING to have this deceptive crap presented to you over and over in a single evening. That along with with the latest crazy exercise equipment concept, "free" (with expensive program enrollment) credit reports, and Big Pharma drug ads. It's all crap, if you ask me. I don't buy any of it in any way, shape, or form. I guess someone has to sue for false advertising such that it would lead to a court injunction keeping the ads off the air for at least a while. The penis enlargement pills have seemed to have gone away, though. For now ... Maybe they've saturated the market and America's horrible "penis-not-big-enough" tragedy is finally over! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Oct 07, 2010, 04:28pm
