.mov files - fast forward crash???

A plead to the tech wizards here:

I use GOM-player, VLC media player and of course Media Player Classic - Home Media......for my vids. And have the K-Lite Media Codec pack.

BUT: A lot of lately downloaded .mov files crash when going fast forward .
Any ideas/solutions???

You might try the QuickTime app, for which there's a free download, PC compatible. It's not the most savory solution, as it's one more app, and then you'll be hounded by the updates, and those are painfully slow on installation. And right after an update install, it automatically CHECKS FOR UPDATES! WTF?!?!?!

And the app itself isn't that hot anyway.

So it would be something of an act of desperation. Hope it doesn't have to come to that.

A better solution would be for sites to just cut it with the .mov (QT) altogether. Sorry, I know this doesn't help you.

Anyway, above are the pros and CONS of QT. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I didn't realise anyone still used .mov files. I would suggest Kantaris player as it's always been very reliable in my experience, but I'm pretty certain it's based on VLC's playback functions so if VLC has a problem, Kantaris probably will too.

It could be worth checking your video drivers are up-to-date. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

If you have or can obtain Quicktime Pro, load the .mov file, and the file menu has an export option. Select .mp4 file format, set the video to passthrough (assuming it's h.264) and audio to passthrough if possible or it's not a big deal to re-encode audio to AAC format.

Let it go, and in like 10 seconds you have it in .mp4 format, with no loss in video quality.

VLC has a convert function too that can do the same thing, just a little more effort required getting through the screens.

I never liked KLite Codec Pack, I prefer these two components:

(KLite uses ffdshow iirc)

Hey Denner!

My advice needs an update. DO NOT INSTALL QUICKTIME!

Yesterday, after a ridiculously prolonged wait for SLOWTIME to download and install its latest upgrade, I decided enough was enough and after a reboot, I uninstalled it and iTunes as well.

The result? My computer can't recognize the CD -Rom. Why, I don't know, but I'm pissed off as hell having to figure out how to fix this bullshit.

So forget Qu... Slowtime. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Oh, friend - I will avoid Quicktime - anytime......there are after all so many alternatives to playing .mov files - but thanks for the update.
And BTW: A bit strange (and maybe not) ....SOME .mov files plays without any problems (fast forward included)... (at VLC, Gom, Media Player Classic, ect) and others certainly not..

And again another BTW: The same goes even for some/A FEW .vmw files - most use that now, great - but never had any fast forward problems with .avi files, though. "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"

It sounds like possibly the file association changed, do you see the drive in my computer and the cd-rom just isn't reading the files. Or is the drive absent completely in your listings?

I think this was to me and not Denner, so here goes.

The driver is installed for the internal CD-RW (not a ROM after wall). I uninstalled it and reinstalled through the device manager from the system control panel. I rebooted. The result is always the same: It does NOT show up in My Computer. The device manager continues to say there is a problem with it, but all solutions offered there do not change anything. The device does show up in the "tree" in device manager, and its icon has a little yellow oval with a black "!" in it -- meaning something's wrong.

I also went to the trouble of redownloading and reinstalling the firmware for the CD-RW (Dell support site). Numerous reboots later, there's no change.

And all of the above are also true of the internal DVD-ROM, BTW, which also went into a post-QT-uninstall coma.

I'm completely at a loss of what to do. Should I cut all power to the unit (unplug the cord) and see if that does it? Will try anything now.

I'll feed the computer Spaghettios if that helps. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Have you checked the bios to see if it shows up on the list of drives there?
Restart the pc and when the dell logo shows keep pressing F2 until the message Entering Setup appears.
Depending on your dell you should be able to look up the drives in there.

Warning when you exit setup, exit without saving that way if you accidentally hit a wrong setting it wont matter. Were just trying to find out if your pc does not see the CD or windows doesn't. we don't want to change anything.

Today I finally checked the BIOS, and no, the drives don't show up, not in the devices list and not in the boot sequence.

Should I update the BIOS?

Thanks for your help! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Drooler,

Quicktime blows, it is perhaps even worse than WMP if that is possible. Not sure why it would have messed up your drive when you tried to install it. I always thought the BIOS would autodetect the drive if it was there provided you didn't have a screwed up jumper or something (which I assume you didn't change). May be a dead drive or bad cable? I've never even opened the box on this computer. And two drives, both the CD-RW and the DVD-ROM, went kaput at the same time. That's why a bad cable or jumper seem very unlikely. Both worked fine until immediately after I used Add/Remove programs to uninstall pesky Quicktime and its close download companion, iTunes. (Just got tired of spending so much time with slow, slow updates for crappy QT.) I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Hi Drooler, hmm well that tells us something.
( by the way I was a software tech for 20 years
and have a degree in computer science just in case your wondered if I was steering you wrong LOL)

Ok there is good news and bad.

Your bios has nothing to do with windows, the fact quicktime seemed to have messed up your drive is not connected to this problem.
If your drive was there before upgrading wont change it.
There are two or three options at this.

1. you got a computer virus that effected your bios ( very rare)

2. A cable or something fell off the drive.

3. Your cd controller went bad .

You may already know this Drooler but when you boot the pc looks at the mother board and identifies everything hooked to it. Ram, keyboard, mouse video card and some even tell temperature too and of course drives. This is the first check point of hardware, if it doesn't read here it wont elsewhere unless its a USB drive.

I would try one thing if you are able to.
I would try pulling the battery on the mother board and replace it. Often times this can be the problem as in some bios setups it is not default to look for the cdrom.
so if the battery is low or bad it might lose memory upon reboot.

If you have not ever replaced a battery let me know and I can walk you through the safe way.

But first I would check cables two and from the power supply and drive and if there are extra ones in the pc try a different cable.
Sorry for the delay getting back. Since 2007

Thanks, CT. No need to apologize, btw. I appreciate the time you're putting in to my problem. (And thanks to Slutty as well.) I've been slow to get back until this weekend myself.

I'll have to check the power and data cables at this point, I'm sure. The thing's long past warranty, so what the hay.

I doubt the battery's gone, 'cause I did cut all power to the unit once and the clock stayed accurate. In my time, I've had 2-3 Macs that had dead batteries (with the year going back to 1913 and all that), and I replaced them, so with this current unit it shouldn't be anything Greek Rocket Science.

Thanks again! I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

If its eide it could be a bad/loose cable (as both drives could be on the same cable), but I agree that seems like it would be an unlikely odd coincidence - unless you smacked the computer a few times out of frustration with QT (which would be understandable). I'm sure you probably have extra ones laying around if you hoard that kind of crap like I do, it might be worth a try (also try hooking them up one at a time if they were on the same cable - make sure to adjust the jumper if they aren't on cable select - or setting one up as slave to the HD if you can).

Good luck, I can't believe you still have a CD-RW drive - how old is this computer? Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

It'll be seven years old in a couple of months. (I guess the itch is starting just a bit early.) But hey, I have my CDs to play on it, to get some tunes going for porno time and all ... I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

7 year?
Hmmmm I am more apt to think your controller burned out on the motherboard if its not a cable or a solder came lose as after 7 years that's along time. I have had older models like first and 2nd gen Pentiums that still run in my garage but by the 2000 era most were designed a life maybe 5 years unless self built. I have a 3 year old quad core which was top of the line Frankenstein back then now its not more then a porn paper weight lol.
I am guess just like myself age is the culprit more likely and just happened to be coincidental with QT install as the bios not seeing it is more likely a hardware issue. Since 2007

Ha, your the first person I've heard in a while talk about actually playing CDs outside of their car. There was just a news story last week saying record labels were going to stop pressing them soon.

7 years is quite old, and I agree with CT that at that age you could have all kinds of problems. If you can find one they used to sell PCI eide controllers, if you can get one of those cheap it might be worth a try. Bunny Lebowski: I'll suck your cock for a thousand dollars.

Drooler, I think the crank on the side of the case might need to be turned a few times to start it.

Perhaps we can get a pc intervention and have PU members show up with a new PC and something called a DVD player .

Not picking on ya Drooler, I have had my share of pc's since the 70's going back to the sherman tanks the 8080 and ironically the ones they called 5150 how fitting was that lol. Back in my day you ran BBS and porn was black and white pixles. The first animated pc porn I saw was Ginger Lynn in a 8 second black and white 3" x 3" movie that was actually a ASII batch file that showed her masturbating. Was pretty good and fit on a 1.4 floppy LOL wow back in the day sorry flash back moment there guys. Since 2007
