The only drawback may be gaming but as I'm no longer playing around with my PC I will use Win XP Pro as long as possible. I've seen Vista on many different machines all of them much better equipped than my two PCs but none of them made me think "wow!" instead they seemed to be slower than what I've got. Vista eats up ressources like a hog and it doesn't offer me any real benefit.

If you aren't seriously into gaming and drooling over the possibility of using DirectX 10.1 - I'd stick with XP. You'll get a lot more performance out of your machine. Hell, even with gaming, DirectX 10.1 is slower than 9, plus it offers only minimally better graphics right now. As the game developers switch over, those differences will increase. I still use good old standard xp (with service pack updates of course). I've seen a lot of Vista and while some of the apps look cool on the pc's that got heavy duty ram it's just that, the look. There aren't enough apps out there right now that really make full use of Vista so until they develop a killer Vista app or stop supporting Xp I'll be using my pokey machine with Xp.

I have Xp and Vista. XP is far superior. For that much RAM you will need a 64 bit sysem, sure you already know. Vista has a nice feature that allows you to thumbnail pictures in zips and actually scroll through them in the picture windows. Also, when moving files and a exact name is found it can add a number to the end automatically, plus it does not stop when this happens. It will keep going and allow you to answer this later. So if you are on the can for a half hour you dont have to worry about your transfer stopping 30 seconds after you leave. All these things can be done with XP as well, just have to find applications to do it. Draw backs of Vista really make it unwise to buy. Besides, Microsoft knows how much the sucked ass with this OS so they are making a new one that is supposed to release in a year or so. Vista nags you more than a middle-aged trailer park housewife. You can not move with it asking if you are sure. This is a result of Microsoft buttoning up all the security holes people bitched about XP having. Vista also is not readily capable of hot-swapping your HDDs. This is a huge draw back for us porn collectors. Sometimes, and I emphasize sometimes, you can have Vista recognize a drive that was not there during boot up if you go into the devise manager and have it rescan the drives. Very tedious after a while. XP had no such issues, plug in the drive, wait 5 seconds, and enjoy your porn. As Toadsith already mentioned, it is resource hungry. My Vista Home Premium machine eats up 800 MB of RAM just idling. I still use the XP "Media Edition" that came with my Dell box nearly 3 years ago. I've never been much of a bandwagoner anyway, and the Vista bandwagon sounds like it's a small one rolling at high speed down tight mountain roads that have no guardrails. Vista sounds like the "downgrade," not the other way around. As the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it." I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

You would think that a multi-billion dollar company with probably the largest part of the PC market would be able to come up with an OS that is actually better than what came before it or it's nearest competitor. Vista is certainly not a good example. Any OS that requires the user to purchase a brand new computer simply to be able to use it is doomed to failure. I love my XP, and since my computer is about 4 yrs old then Vista is never going to be possible. Long live the Brown Coats.

I bought it because i needed a 64 bit OS. I figured I might as well "upgrade" to Vista. Boy am I sorry I did not pay the extra $20 and get XP-Pro 64. Many headaches with Vista so far. And the issues with nothing having drivers for Vista is no rumor. Most everything either needs drives downloaded, which can be hard to find at times, or it needs to be run in compatibility mode. To bad there is no compatability mode to make the whole damn thing run as XP "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~ PU Interview

I'm a computer professional by trade, and use nothing by XP Pro at work. However, at home, I bought a new PC about 10 months ago, it came with Vista, and I said what the heck. Until Vista SP1 came out, I had alot of little problems. But, since my home PC is really more just to play around and surf the web, it didn't bother me that much. Now that Vista SP1 is out, and I have it properly configured, it works really well. Note that by "properly configured" I mean: 1) Turning off that F***ing file indexer!! It is a huge waste of time and disk space. This is Microsoft's sorry excuse for people that don't know how to store files in folders on their hard drive. Just like your filing cabinet, if you don't keep your files neatly organized, I think you get what you deserve. BTW, if anyone wants a far superior file searcher, even over Windows XP Search (with the silly little dog), then use Agent Ransack, it's a super fast utility that does not need to index your hard drive. 2) A big enough hard drive to handle the massive system restore files Vista makes. My system came with 400GB, that's just about right. 3) Enough memory - 3 GB 4) Dual core processors. AMD processors are an economical, effective alternative to Intel. 5) Enabling classic view on the start menu, control panel, etc. 6) Numerous other little tweaks I forgot about after turning them off. So, after all of this, what do I have? A pretty nice PC, nothing over XP in terms of reliability or performance, more like an experience in frustration. Guess I'm part masochist ;0) There is one cool little thing I like about Vista over XP: in the toolbar, when you cursor over an active task, it gives you a little mini preview window, so you can see what's in it! You can even be watching a movie, then go to your taskbar and see it miniaturized! Wow, one neat thing and a ton of tweaking to get it to behave....hmmmmm.... I held onto my W98SE until just a few months ago, when I changed to XP Pro3, so you can just imagine how I feel. I must have been in a coma all those wasted years.

First, on your point #1, you're right that people get what they deserve when they don't organize their own files. I remember reading an article somewhere, might have been in The Economist, that claimed that the days of having to do that organizing were coming to an end because the search functions being developed would serve the purpose well enough. But I thought they'd missed the point that it's not just what's on the computer and where it is that matters; it's really what's in one's own mind. It's always helpful to already know where things are, so you don't even have do a search and then plod through what are sometimes reams of results, most of which are not relevant. And that means having to be careful enough to name files and folders in ways that make them easy to retrieve, no matter how you go about finding them. The last part quoted here reminds me of another OS, the Mac. It seems that once again Apple took the lead and Microsoft just basically copied the idea of the Dock on the Mac. Some things never change. And Apple was also the leader in fast searches. Spotlight (on the Tiger OS, which I still use) finds things very quickly, even as you're typing. Maybe Vista can do that, too (?). That's the one drawback I find with XP: You have to figure out how the little doggie search function works and then set up all of the parameters before running it, which is kind of a pain. NB: This is a following-day remark. One thing about XP that does irk me is the obvious code bloat they've put in for getting the sizes of folders. Because I always make a copy of my most newly collected porn on CD, I keep track of the folder I'm putting it in until it's close to the capacity limit for the CD. But if I reboot my machine because it's starting to run slow (clogged RAM) and then I mouse over that folder, I'm told not its actual size, but that it's "more than XXX MB." Whose brilliant idea was it to add code that would tell the user such worthless information? I want to know how much IS in the folder, not how much more than X amount it is! (My F5 key will most surely be the first one to go.) I mean, on the scale of all things ludicrous, that's right up there with The Ministry of Silly Walks (that great Monty Python skit). I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Nov 27, 2008, 01:24pm

w98se is still myo the best os they made , win2000 was more a network/server which was as stable as it gets to. I would have stayed at 98se if it wasnt for new programs it just wouldnt run due to its limits, as it goes xp-pro is pretty good ( now) Since 2007

I totally agree with your comments about Microsoft - they are masters of copying (and sometimes one-upping) other companies ideas, yet rarely truly innovate on their own. If you know anything about software, look what they're doing with .NET over Sun's Java - very similar language and run-time concepts, but taken to the next level (although I still think Java is better IMHO). A detail I think was missed in my ranting post - try Googling for Agent Ransack, odd name, but it is an excellent file search utility, without the limitations of the "little doggie search" - and it's free. Also gives you some handy right click options for folders. Just a small user tip... Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb. - Batman

Gentlemen, If you have never ran xppro-64 on a quad-core let me tell you something .........WOW. I took and hour and got the driver online and installed my xp. CRAP, its insanely fasts. I was dicken around thinking why go back. Well anyways made my choice XP on this machine is so fast I cant tell what happens lol, click and crap is there faster then you could blink. Keep in mind, chipsets, drivers and bios knowledge is needed. You can jack it up also if you do not know what you are doing. I installed xp on my 80gigs using the vista 750 for other stuff. Only going to have a few apps on it so its stays fast. Also finding drivers is a bitch, because my machine was not made for XP it was made for vista. Catch 22 here is for now it will only read partial ram, thats the trade off. I heard there is and update to take it to 10 gigs will check on that. Anywasy lol runing xp on 4 gigs is fast as hell. made the jump took the risk, it paid off . LOL ps the actual install took 10 minutes LOL Since 2007

This is very true about Microsoft. Hell, the main features are not even theirs. The point click interface was stolen from someone else as was the idea of using "windows." You got more than enough RAM and a nice sized hard drive. I say dual boot the 2, have the best of both worlds If you HAVE to choose. Vista. Unless you're an avid computer user who does insane things w/ their computer you won't run into the problems people bitch about.

Well to share a tad , I am one of these guys that doesnt like pretty I like workable power. I was one whom loved windows2000 ( not the ME version but the workhorse.) I still have the os and license but it doesnt play games well. I love unix, linux and linspire. I was born and raised on Dos, writting progs by the time I was 17. And used BBS's I actually was part of a team whom first created a multi-email system that would check mutible types of msn, yahoo etc all at once in one prog. So when I got the windows vista mendia edition premium I thought wow. Well I got all the drivers I needed to make this one a media edition on its own rights. I am happy and proud to say. I wont use Vista again, perhaps the next gen. The bottom line i guess is i like power in my pc. Logically I should be using a powermac, but my hertitage is build solid in pc's for now but who knows what the future may bring. Since 2007

Windows 2000 was the bomb, so rock-solid stable - especially considering it lived in the era of Windows 98. A seriously underrated operating system, though as you said, it wasn't a gamer at heart. DOS had a lot of pluses too - I still use the DOS emulator (aka. Command) to do searches these days as it is easier than training that stupid Microsoft puppy. I'll have to check out IKnoPorn's suggestion of Agent Ransack though, that sounds like it might be easier. "I'm not a number, I'm a free man!" You're absolutely right about WIN2K, even more stable that XP Pro, but alas all things must change. I didn't mean to sound like an ad, but I cannot recommend Agent Ransack enough. You don't have to pre-register known file types, and it will search through any file for any string. And no indexes required. Someone in the industry said long ago "All of the best software is free". I still think this is largely true today. Perhaps free software is number 1?? Sorry for the bad Prisoner pun ;-) Some days, you just can't get rid of a bomb. - Batman
