Loosing stash/collections - and how to avoid it? A bit inspired by Cybertoads latest poll - but then mainly the question/fear of loosing some valued stash - and how to protect it. My "fear" is primarily the risk of one or more (unlikely with "more", though) external hard drives to break down. The idea of that is a night mare - after collecting good porn for ages. The way to protect you against this is what? At this point I copy the most valued stash to yet another hard drive. But in spite of still lower prices on these external drives: is the solution a "double stash" the best way to be certain not to loose anything? Any other way? Any ideas? Not really. No substitute for back up external drives. If the original fails make sure you immediately back up the back up! Cap'n. Don't use DVDRs. Most of them only seem to last a few years before the surface begins to deteriorate. I've guessing that BRDRs suffer from the same problem? My archive of choice an external HDD converter and a stack of 1TB and 2TB internal drives (You plug them into the converter which is a little like a pedestal you drop them into, and it handles power and data connection). Although, to be honest the saving of buying internal drives over external ones doesn't seem to be as great as it once was, but they do take up less space in the cupboard. If the internal drives are really 1 GB and 2 GB (not 1 TB and 2 TB), that would seem like a nightmare in the number of hard drives you have to keep (and the record keeping to keep track of what is on the hard drives). Was the 1 and 2 GB a typo, and you meant TB instead? Files sizes (for both videos and photos) keep growing. You need larger and larger hard drives to store these files. I just bought a 3 TB external hard drive 3 days ago. A few years ago, I thought my 500 GB external hard drive would last for years. That was before I bought the 1 TB and the 2 TB hard drives. Now I'm buying 3 TB hard drives, partly because the price keeps dropping, but mainly because the file size keeps growing.

I will never use a Cloud based system. Call me paranoid but I think this is one of the surest way for other people to get access to your personal material. If you use a cloud base system then you are saving your info on someone else's computer and we all know that possession is 9/10 of the law. Just look at Facebook where all the data you uploaded to their server is now their property. You can argue that it really isn't but it's on their server and they can do whatever they like with it. Then there are all these dirty little secret that keep getting released about them tracking you eventhough you aren't logged in to their system and how they also get your friends data. Long live the Brown Coats.

The stuff I don't want to lose I have on hard drives AND I burn on to CD's. I've just done CD number 1033 of photos. The number of CDs with videos I don't have a count of, but it must be in the 100's. It's a pain, but something like 4 or so dead hard drives later, I know that there's none that is completely invulnerable. Same goes for CD's, sure, but it's insurance. Actually, considering how insurance is these days, it's BETTER than insurance. I do hope I never have to restore my collection from all of those CD's! At first, I tried storing my porn stash on 12-inch vinyl records. Problem was, they didn't hold enough data. Plus there was the issue of analog-to-digital conversion. The good news is that if you play it on a turntable, it sounds just like something by Brian Eno. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England. Edited on Sep 30, 2011, 06:39pm

The notion of storing your porn on vinyl sounds interesting. Do you get a blue buzz when listening to the photos and videos in playback? That sounds like a sure money-maker, to me. Lol.

Well, give yourself some credit. You thought that stuff up. It had nothing to do with what I'd said. I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

Drooler, you've come up with great business idea - an insurance company specialising in porn stashes... Or perhaps we should all have safety deposit boxes for our back-up HDs..

^ What Cap'n said. Among other things, I'm a sysadmin, and a bit of a backup fiend - I harass folk regularly about it and have little sympathy when they lose stuff :| Given the money you've spent on porn, and the time you've spent amassing and organising it to your taste, the cost of an extra drive(s) to back it up to is trivial. There should be plenty of easy software around to incrementally mirror one onto another; should take minutes once a week or so.

Remember the Laserdisc? It's not actually a digital format but instead effectively functions as a sort of analog DVD, if you can wrap your head around that idea. They're a little before my time (first coming out in 1979), but I do seem to remember an art class in middle school having a few laserdiscs, each of which had thousands of images of artworks stored on them--so you can imagine how great it would be for your preferred works of art. I actually bought one or two laser discs, even though I never bought a laser disc player. I lost those discs a long time ago. They had music videos on them.

It would be devastating I agree to lose your stash, I dread a house fire or burglar taking off with it. I currently have two 2TB drives and another two 2TB backing up, its a hassle adding stuff cause you have to remember to also add it to the backup drive but I can live with that. I couldn't do the CD DVD thing, I'd never have the patience to restore it all going through all them cds, it would take days with my collection and then there's storage. Its bad enough with all these drives cluttering up everywhere. "Women are like tricks by sleight of hand, Which, to admire, we should not understand." WILLIAM CONGREVE

No no no no no no no - having RAID is not backup! Not even RAID 1 (disk mirroring)! If your RAID device fries it'll possibly also fry the drives contained within. And except with very very expensive business-class RAID, you tend to find that if a RAID disk fails, you replace it and then wait about two days for the new disk to integrate into the array, during which time the other disks are thrashing away and then you very well might find that your other good disks fail. Backup is about copying to another separate disk, in a separate enclosure and connected via USB 2/3 or eSATA.

Well said! And ideally keeping it somewhere else, away from your computer. Next to it, it gets damaged or stolen, the same fate will likely befall your backup too. I know it sounds paranoid, but if something like that were to happen, I figure losing all your stuff - porn, work, photos etc - is the last thing you'd need on top of everything else!

Obviously my backup is a business necessity so may be done somewhat more seriously than the average user, but I keep my duplicated HDDs at another address, in another town. One of the two archives is stored in a fire-resistant safe. I hope the chances of me losing anything is neglible. My biggest fear really is backup media deteriorating with age and failing with me knowing about it. Cloud storage worries me, and until upload speeds start to match download speeds I don't see it as viable yet anyway. My upload speed is only 1/8th of the download rate so uploading TBs of data just isn't viable. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

So much for not loosing that stash. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual. Certainly without any choice. That's the way your hardcore Commie works." - Gen. Jack D. Rippper, Dr. Stranglove

I don't know of any other way to protect your stash other than backing up. I use the small USB external drives (the ones powered off the USB too - Western Digital and Seagate) I'm up to a dozen now. Those are safely secured at home. But then I back up on AC-powered external drives (they're cheaper per TB of capacity) and those are stored safely in an alternate location. On the larger drives I back up according to whatever number I've assigned the smaller drive. This way, if a drive fails I still have a copy. I've been using those common external drives for probably five years now (the first one was only 120GB) and I've yet to have one fail. But it can happen so I'm fussy about backing up.

I too keep several external drives. For me though I would only be bummed if I lost about 60 of my favorites the rest I would do without. I am picky don't get me wrong. But I lost about 3000 songs on a crash and I got over it. the classics would be hard to replace though. Since 2007

I go to the extend now: MOST of my favorite stash is placed (in copies) on two external drives. What more can you do........? "I don't drink anymore - I freeze it, and eat it like a popcicle"
