Pics...to watermark or not? Hi everyone, I need a little advice from the professonal porn users here. Especially from you pic lovers. I have always run a site that specializes in video and never had much interest in posting pic sets. The main reason is all the work converting to different sizes and manually having to watermark all those pics. I am now converting to a professional CMS that does all the encoding of video and pics for me so I will be adding a lot more pictures to the site. I am not sure whether it is common to watermark pics provided in the membership section that are packaged in zip files for download. Most webmasters tell me "watermark everything!" while most surfers tell me "No, I won't join a site that watermarks their pics. It ruins the pics." I can see the argument on both sides but am not sure what is most common in the industry. In my opinion, if someone really wants to pirate the pic, they could easily crop off the watermark. They do it all the time with video. But my fellow webmasters say "why make it easy for them" On the other hand, I want my members happy with the pics. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Have a wonderful Christmas. Edited by Staff on Dec 24, 2011, 08:44am

A small watermark I think is ok, but I'm not a photo collector as such so doesn't really bother me to much, I'm no fan of a huge watermark though spoiling the beauty of the photograph. "Women are like tricks by sleight of hand, Which, to admire, we should not understand." WILLIAM CONGREVE

As you quite rightly say, it will not prevent folk from removing them anyway, if they are that determined. That said, I think a small watermark such as the ones used by ATK is no big deal from my point of view. The large watermarks that used to be prevalent have now largely disappeared thankfully, as they were a problem. They caused major disfigurement of the image & were distracting. The benefit of watermarking from your point of view is to minimise the likelihood of commercial level piracy. If you can make it tiresome & time consuming for them by having a watermark, so much the better for you. A spin-off of watermarking is that at what might be called a casual level of piracy, such as reposting on public fora, if a surfer likes it, they can see where it came from to go and get more. That can actually work in your favour. You could look at that as a form of free advertising. So to sum up from this photo phreak's point of view. I have no objection to small typeface watermarking in any of the corners of the image. Thanks for taking the trouble to ask, BTW. HTH Cap'n. Review sites seem to appreciate if photos within the members' area are not watermarked. I mark everything outside the members' area, but leave the stuff inside pure. Webmaster of StripGameCentral and A Measure of Curiosity.

If I were producing content, I'd watermark, but keep it small and non-intrusive. As a user, I HATE watermarks that interfere with my viewing. And there have been some sites with extremely, ridiculously large and ugly and garish watermarks! I think to myself: "They went to all of the trouble to arrange shooting (a lot involved just there) and editing and so on, and THEN they RUIN THEIR OWN WORK with a watermark that a lot of people are going to just HATE." So, don't be that person. And good luck with the CMS. I used to work with one (can't remember the name now), and it was awful. Hopefully, yours will turn out to be more solution than "added nuisance." I wanted something new, so I left England for New England.

I do professional photography, I try and find subtle water marks that do not take away from my photo. A person decides in less then 3 seconds if the picture the view is pleasing, I for one do not want my viewer to include the watermark as part of their viewing enjoyment so I do it subtle. I'd say watermark but make it unobtrusive. If someone wants to steal the pictures and repost them somewhere else, they most likely won't bother with removing it. No need to make the watermark pretty: your URL in a white typeface with a bit of transparency might serve. But since your content seems to include amateurs, maybe you should take into account that someone might use individual pictures around. But it's hard to avoid them cropping somehow to avoid showing the watermark. As for zip files, pictures inside zip files are usually the same that are available to download individually. If you offer higher sizes only as zip files, watermark them the same way.

You are correct about the "free advertising." We don't have a huge problem with piracy and most we find does not have the watermark removed. It is interesting we sometimes have people join then email the link where they found the pirated video which we then have removed. I have encountered a few pirated vids that someone has taken the time to remove our watermark and replace it with their own and it seems to lead to the same company over and over.

This is how I feel. It does seem to ruin the work which is a shame really. As for the CMS, I too have tried several companies that were awful. This time I am trying elevated x which has a very good reputation. Difficult program to figure out but has a great encoder that simplifies the process.

Hi Khan, I apologize, my question to the users was the first thread I have ever started here and feel it was a legitimate question with no intent of drumming up business. I have a history hear of showing respect to the users and only responding to posts I feel I have something of value to add. And the users have stated before they love talking to the webmasters. I was simply responding out of courtesy to lance. Once again, I apologize. There will be no need to warn me again. I feel like crap now and wont be back. Have a great day. I'm probably the only consumer who thinks watermarks are good Maybe taken from my baseball card collecting days - watermarks, logos, & borders are all a part of the package that makes each picture unique.

Yariana, there was nothing wrong at all with your initial question. It was just the part of your reply to Lance about affiliates that was inappropriate. The only reason I didn't just delete Lance's post (and your reply to it) was that part of that exchange *did* have to do with your initial question. Which again, was fine. Anyway, didn't mean to upset you here on Christmas eve nor did I want to side-track the thread addressing watermarks, thus the "'nuff said" Happy holidays. I understand. I just felt scolded for spamming your board which was not my intent. I should probably stick with boards like xbiz for these questions but xbiz is mostly webmasters and I wanted the opinions of users as well because after all, their opinions are very valuable. Plus, I get a kick out of reading the posts here. I don't reply that often and this is my first thread here but I always read the posts because I learn a lot from them. Sorry for losing my cool and thanks for clarifying your intent. Yariana Edited on Dec 24, 2011, 03:51pm

Hi Yariana, Like the others glad to have a webmaster on the board too. I have been a member on here quite a awhile, just know if any posts etc are corrected it is never meant as personal, I think most of us appreciate that PU will address concerns quickly. The site stays clean and spam is quickly deleted. ( not saying you did anything wrong or not, not my place to judge that ) But hopefully you will take away from the responses that PU cares about its members and their experiences including webmasters. I am not sure if it helps, but when I think I am riding the fence too close I drop staff a line and ask ummm is this ok ? Its a great group hope ya stick around ! Since 2007

I am not sure if answering that is ok? As it would guide a person on removing possible copyrights ? I guess it is safe to say though, its not worth the effort even with proper software the time spent would not be worth any effort to remove them and is why many place these. I make water marks that tend to blend in with the picture so if I see it on the net I can quickly tell if its mine and prove it. Since 2007

As someone who, as I've mentioned before, found your site specifically from pirated content, I'd say a small, unobtrusive watermark in a corner of the image where there's no action occuring (usually the lower-right hand corner) would be at worst, fine, and actually at best welcoming since it lets people know where the content came from.

jberryl69 rote So how does one remove a watermark anyway? Short of cropping, you'll need photo editing software. I use PhotoShop7. The healing, blur and smudge tools work great for logo removal. I am not looking to pirate and resell the image. I'm just looking to clean up a favorite image for personal use only. Watermarks can be inobtrusive or just flat-out disasterous. the only watermarks in my permanent collection are the ones I haven't yet gotten to. PhotoShop is also great for altering the image to make it more pleasing to view. You can fix an image that is badly lit and contrasted or has unfortunate composition. The adjustments one can make to brightness, contrast, color balance and saturation are amazing. While all that color is nice, I truly believe the true photography is black and white and a color images can be desaturated with one mouse click. There are a slew of filters that can be used for creative stylizing that can be quite pleasing. I'v paid for most of what I've collected, and short of reselling them, they are mine to do with as I please. VLC Media Player Will do much the same for videos (though video watermarks you're stuck with unless you have a room full of expensive electronics) unless life also gives you water and sugar, your lemonade is gonna suck.
