Some Thoughts For Both Long Term and New Members

I read an article in Time magazine recently that talked about the decline in popularity of Wikipedia -- mainly in the number of contributors -- and it reminded me of some of the concerns regular members have voiced here.

Okay, "Where Wikipedia Ends" is not an uplifting title, but it mentioned how "Over time [...] a class system emerged; now revisions made by infrequent contributors are much likelier to be undone by élite Wikipedians." I am kind of worried this is part of the problem for attracting some new members here; lots of regulars doing most of the contributions, and, as a result, scaring off some potential newbies.

Don't get me wrong: the regular and frequent PU'ers are great people; funny, insightful, tolerant, opinionated, and above all civil. They write great reviews, helpful comments, and add lots of laughs to the forum (despite his avatar having its head up its own ass, I would nominate Wittyguy as one of the funnier members on the forum, but he is on somewhat of a leave of absence at the moment). But I still think that this site could be even better with more members.

I certainly do not want PU to become like Wikipedia, which has a considerably elite not-in-my-backyard/website feel to it, which sort of ruins the whole wiki concept with an execution of pretty limited scope. I first contributed to Wikipedia for a school assignment a few years ago; it was interesting, but the demanding rules and style guidelines made me stop contributing once the assignment was over. Just read some of the discussion pages for longer articles -- you can hear more intelligent thought from a group of five year olds than a lot of the stylistic arguments "discussed" on these pages. Granted, they may have a point, as there are plenty of Wikipedia articles that are about as well written as a collection of tweets. But their site gives the feel that it is open to anyone -- as long as he or she agrees to follow the thousands of rules and style guides This is something in which I think PU has a great advantage over other sites; a few simple rules with lots of tolerance.

I also don't want to attract more spammers, which Raging Buddhist addressed in his recent thread on reducing forum spam. There are a few new members who have had good intentions and have contributed quite a bit to the site in just the last few months, so obviously we do attract new members, just not very many it seems.

About a year and a half ago Denner wondered what we could do to attract more members, in his thread The more, the merrier, but I was wondering if people thought there is maybe something we should not do in order to attract more members, or are we always going to revel in our own little niche of porn lovers...uh, I mean users?

I would love to hear from new members about what brought them here, and (hopefully) why they are staying. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Hum...as someone who is not a new member, I somehow get the impression you are hoping to not hear from the upper forum posters in this one!
But I am going to post anyway.

I would like to see new members show up. We recently had Capn jump the fence into our forum and he has been a good member here. More people jumping in would give new aspects.

Another question is why are some of the upper reviewers not posting much. Ace of Aces, Mbaya, Roseman, Snowdude, apoctom, asmith12, Trashman, and nygiants03 are all above me in the review section and have very few postings in the forum. Mbaya as some with 167 posts, but Snowdude has 0 postings. So why are these major contributors to PU ignoring such a vibrant section of the site? Hell, it seems many of them have not even reviewed any sites since May or June, and some even earlier.

Getting these guys to contribute should have been easy. They have been here for a while, they have shown themselves willing to put in the time, and they have established themselves as people worth at least listening to. This baffles me.

As for new members, I really do not know if we are scaring them away or not, but new ones would be welcomed. Of course I do not mean to say that you current guys are not good enough. :)

I am guessing for some people they see that we are an established group here. It can be hard to start a conversation with a group that knows each other. Ever go to a small party where you know no one and just try to fit in and talk to people? I do not imagine it would be very easy! There is 8437 registered users for PU, only 5.7% have a single post in the forum! Of the 480 users that have at least one post in this forum only 24 users have more than 100 posts.

Wittyguy and myself each make up 7% of the forum, so we total account for 14% of the forum posts. The top 5 posters make up for a 3rd of the forum and the top 10 make up about 54% of the forum.

Just wanted to throw out a few numbers for your enjoyment. "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~

Since my name came up, I want to clarify my postings. I read the forum every day, but often simply don't have the time to add anything substantial. Additionally, I have a few times even started threads. I post on topics I find interesting, but not on everything. As far as reviews, lately I have spent a few weeks organizing my downloads. Also, I just haven't had the time to join many sites due to being busy at work. I very much appreciate the efforts of the small number of us who do most reviews and forum posts. While I would love to see a bigger base of posters, I think what we see here is not at all unusual for blog type sites.

Andy,
Before I go, I must point out that some of the people above you in the rankings no longer review or haven't done so in quite a while. I am not surprised that they are not on the forum either.

I am actually hoping to hear from both on this one, so no worries. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Here's another number: the article said that women only make up 13% of the contributors to Wikipedia. I bet we would be lucky if women make up even 1.3% of our contributors! That's the one thing I wish this site had -- a balance of opinion, at least in terms of gender. "It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? Well, I always adopt the approach:

Jump in, be bright & positive & don't be afraid to ask questions, even if they may appear noobish.
Folk will either take to you or ignore you.
Occasionally you trip over the odd troll, but not often & not here, so far. :0)

Works for me.

What brought me here? Surfing review sites.

I'm staying 'cos I like the company! :0)
It is good to find somewhere where you can get honest exchange of opinion on topics that you might hesitate to discuss, either at home or work! ;0) Admiral of the PU Hindenburg. 2009 PU Award

I started reviewing a bit before I joined in on some discussions on the forum. My reviews, at first, were well intentioned but it was a learning curve as to how to better write reviews. However, the reason I even started posting reviews was the fact that I started to join some bad sites after reading some positive reviews from PU before I was even an active member. This pissed me off and I thought, I mind as well start writing my own to help others like myself who feel they have been duped by a review from a user.

As time went on and after some positive feedback, I went to the forums. During this time, after about a few weeks of joining, there were a lot of topics that I was interested in. Therefore, I started posting a lot and adding threads that I felt might help myself and others get to know the users better. But, lately the topics have just not been for me really. I dunno if I just hit the max threshold for porn that everyone appears to hit every once in awhile, but my reviews have slowed down a lot recently; as well as my activity in the forum. I do visit almost daily and read, I just have not felt the the need to contribute lately. I'm still trying to wonder why, is it that I need a break, is it poor topics (for me), or some other unknown thing? I wish I knew.

Another thing I think may be contributing to a lack of topics is we have touched base on a huge amount of topics. With discussions in the polls as well as the forums, I can hardly even think of anything that has not been brought up at one time or another. Look, even one of my polls that I wrote weeks ago was already posted a week before. Hell, I think I have contributed to a hell of a lot of poll topics and almost every recent one I have wrote has been denied due to already been asked or being way to similiar. Obviously, I think this may contribute to lack of participation lately. Dunno, I may be wrong though.

As far as staying, I think as long as I am downloading porn, I would be here or at least be around TBP. Honestly and foremost, the reason I come here is to read reviews and I think that those have gone down dramatically in the past month by my trusted users. Seems like we have got some new people doing a lot lately, dracken and capn with some older members throwing some in every once in awhile like mbaya or james4806. However, everyone else has not done much or appear to be that active reviewing :( I don't blame anyone though, all the new sites that come out are usually not worth joining and who wants to review sites they reviewed already 2+ times. But, I do think PU reviews are the best reviews by far due to replies. While the reviews are (by my trusted users) usually spectacular, it's always great to get more info through replies. No other sites allow this. This is why I will always be here as long as I am planning on joining other sites.

To be honest, I think joining a PU review community is just in the minority for most and that why this one is kind of small. Most of the users that come on here and actually create an account do so for reason of obvious schilling or see the $200 tuesdays. Then, they realize that you actually have to be active to get tickets and don't want to be for whatever reason. However, you will always get one or two members a month that want to contribute and usually do. But, I do believe most members are sticking around. They just don't want to be active in the forum and so on, I can't blame them. I can say that this is a great community for open discussion and anyone reading this - say what you want and I guarantee civility. However, I can see why they may not post. But, make sure you reply to questions: that's the true quality of the community.

As someone who is active, but more in a second or third tier kind of way, I can confirm some of your fears. Posting here among people who have been here for so long can be a bit un-nerving. Having said that, I've always been treated with respect and many have given me a stamp of approval with a 'trust' rating. I'd post more if I could, but time constraints don't allow. And as for reviews, some of the more senior people must post a review a week to get to the points level that they're at! I wish I had that kind of time and budget!

I've told a few porn-loving friends (I guess that would make them pornusers...)about this site in hopes of having them join in. I don't think that's happened yet though. I don't think the site is in real danger of becoming elitist simply because the big dogs don't come across as being that way. The important thing is to keep the site active since it is HUGE source of reliable and valuable information.

And besides that, it's a great place to talk about our 'hobby.' There aren't many other guys I can confess to that I still think Tammi Ann is the best porn star ever. My wife just wouldn't get that, and if she did she wouldn't appreciate it.

Thanks for all your efforts guys. I'll continue to contribute what I can.

M

I get the same feeling when I see people on here who say they're current members of like 20 sites at once. Makes me wonder how they have time for anything but porn - and, of course, a job to pay for all memberships. Sarcasm is a body's natural defense against stupidity.

Mbaya, I had noticed that some of those above me have not been reviewing in some months now. Maybe this is my chance to pounce on them and work my way up the review food chain while they are not looking! :)

Then again I have not been doing many reviews lately. That is something I am working on fixing lately. I am trying to get some of the site I have recently downloaded in order so I can see what all I got.

Something discussed a while back is the idea of posting similar threads to revamp a topic and get a new set of ideas on it. Lets face it, our opinions change with time. What I said a year ago might not be the same as I would say today. My thought is to refresh topics every now and then, just post a link to the original so every one knows it has been done before. I believe that discussion was based on the polls, but I feel it applies in the forum as well. Andy,
Just one more review and you reach 100 points. I have been waiting for that for months, or is it years?

It has been a will at 97, then I did one to get to 99. I am just too damn lazy! "For example, badandy400 has taken it upon himself to become the one man Library of Congress for porn with a collection that surely will be in Guinness Book of World Records some day." ~Toadsith~
